Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are hosting an edit-a-thon within the frameworks of the Art+Feminism campaign of 2021 and the “Wikiprojekt: kobiety” initiative. This year, the Art+Feminism event organizers choose to decide what themes and topics to cover during edit-a-thon. Therefore, the Caryatid Collective decided that it is a great opportunity to enrich the community and organize edit-a-thon dedicated to postcolonial female artists. Our work in the realm of Wikipedia is concerned with bridging the gender gap in the context of Polish women of art: artists, researchers, curators, critics. This time we want to broaden our perspective and shed light on the female artists whose work or life is tied to the experience of colonialism or its aftermath. Given these month celebrations of the African-American History and the annual Black History Month, we plan to organize an Edith-a-ton that will increase the awareness about postcolonial artists and interdisciplinary authors. We also want to introduce polish Wikipedia users to the female artists who, in their works, address issues such as “identities by nature and nurture”; indigenous people; African, Jamaican, West Indies diasporas; ethnicity, and intersecting identities (in relation to feminism). Postcolonial studies remain a niche subject still in Poland; it either exists at Universities or in monographic magazines, hence broadening awareness about the issues related is crucial towards building a conscious civil society.
The event, hosted by the Caryatid Collective, will take place on March 20, 2021. We will also invite our collaborators, such as Camera Femina or Złoty KIOSK, to engage in this event. The edit-a-thon will be accompanied by an online lecture (transmitted via Zoom on our Facebook page) to introduce the topic of postcolonial art, artists, history, and related fields. We will also ensure the content is simultaneously translated into Polish Sign Language to provide equal opportunities.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

We will promote the edit-a-thon on Caryatid Collective's social media: Facebook and Instagram, as well as our page on Wikipedia website. Additional promotional support will be granted by the Polish Wikimedia Association (social media, bulletin etc.).
Polish Wikipedia community have been notified about the project and application. Announcements have been published on:
  • Notice Board (Tablica Ogłoszeń) - the announcement can be seen on the top of the page
  • Community Page (Kawiarenka) - the announcement can be seen on the bottom of the page
We will also distribute information about the event through other media and websites, e.g.: Wroclawianin.info, Co jest grane, Radio Wrocław, Magazyn Miasto Kobiet, Arteon, Artpunkt, Dwutygodnik, Obieg, Magazyn Sztuki, ArsForum, Codziennik Feministyczny, Fundacja Feminoteka, Fundacja Kobieca eFKa etc.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

As Caryatid Collective, we are experienced in organizing edith-a-tons and other events (full list at https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikiprojekt:GLAM/Kolektyw_Kariatyda/Wydarzenia) and training in editing Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. During every edit-a-thon hosted by us, at least one person leads the event and helps newcomers.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

As the edit-a-thon will take place remotely, all attendants will use their equipment (computers and Internet connection) to participate in the event. Before the edit-a-thon itself, on our Wikipedia site, a list of suggested articles will be published to create or expand together with a selection of source materials, literature, and useful links. Besides, for this edit-a-thon, we want to request a translation of selected articles or literature from English to Polish to ensure quality content is prepared.
Participants that have already taken part in edit-a-thons organized by Caryatid Collective are trained in editing and can provide high-quality information in the form of articles or biographies. Newcomers that have never edited Wikipedia before will be provided with our collective’s experienced editors' support during the event and after it (consulting articles, solving problems, etc.).

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We encourage everyone who joins us during the given edit-a-thon to continue editing Wikipedia in their free time after the event is over; Caryatid Collective is also open to new members, so anyone who wants to join us is warmly welcomed. After the edit-a-thon, every participant will be able to contact us either via our Facebook page or via e-mail. Documentation of the edit-a-thon will be posted and shared on Caryatid Collective’s social media (Facebook, Instagram). Furthermore, it will also be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

6. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

No

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Caryatid Collective, since it's conception in the beginning of 2019, has participated in Art+Feminism campaigns by organizing edit-a-thons dedicated to female pioneers in art (in 2019) and artivists (in 2020). Even though our work is focused on Polish women of art, we strive to broaden our horizons and present to users of Polish Wikipedia postcolonial artists, who are sadly still largely unknown in that realm. We believe that the Art+Feminism campaign is a great opportunity to botth present those artists to Polish audiences and enrich Wikipedia.

  3. Number of new editors: max. 10
  4. Number of of articles created or improved: max. 20

  • I am voting against. Main reasons: 1. Polish Wikipedia suffers from low-quality translations from enwiki already, especially of the LGB+ articles. For details see the perennial complaints in the polwiki Articles notice board or Talks of the related article pages: a random example [1]. 2. Post-colonial does not apply much to Poland or polwiki, unless we take pre-WW2 Ukraine or the feeble attempts at colonizing Madagascar into account. (Or I am missing something basic). 3. The proponents seem to treat the world and thus also Wikipedia as a BATTLEGROUND, as per their own links [2][3], so THETRUTH and RightGreatWrongs apply. 4. See even more detailed and extensive arguments in the related UCoC discussion on the same plwiki forum (mostly in Polish, but with many backlinks to enwiki and meta) mirroring the same UCoC herein. 5. C.f. the fate of a similar editathon from some years go (Polish wikipedians may remember, or I can URL it too: in short, deemed quite divisive back then) for more. Or contact me by ping or on my meta Talk, if needed, so I/us can elaborate there. Bows Zezen (talk) 19:37, 27 February 2021 (UTC)
