Goals
editDid you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
This was the first time that India hosted Art+Feminism Editathons and it was quite well-received by museums as well as participants. Participating museums were very forthcoming about allowing access to their resources for participants; and we had many people who had never been to museums / editathons learn about collections as well as Wikipedia! However, due to unforeseen circumstances (changes in museum governance etc) we were unable to host our 4th Editathon. Many participants came without their laptops, so we focused our efforts on training them in groups and pairs. A lot of first-time participants created new articles successfully, and it has led to more women-artists from India featured on Wikipedia.
Outcome
editPlease report on your original project targets.
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
4 events | 3 events | We could not host the 4th event due to changes in the Museum's leadership and other unforeseen circumstances. |
70-80 participants | 80 participants; 101 signups | |
45-50 articles created or improved | 29 articles created or improved | At each of the events, we were hoping to create / edit at least 12-15 articles. However, we had a number of first time editors; and a substantial number of participants came without laptops despite instructions. They had to work with others and so we had to focus on training them on editing articles rather than working on new ones right away! |
2-3 repeat participants | 0 | We had thought of visiting all the cities with 2-3 trained volunteers. However, we found it better to recruit volunteers from the city itself and so there were no repeat editors! |
Learning
editProjects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
- What did not work so well?
- What would you do differently next time?
Partnering with museums worked really well as we had immediate access to good sources (even for Wikimedia Commons Uploads in some cases). Most people are not familiar with museums and their collections (especially women artists), so we conducted a museum walk first to familiarise them with the women artists to highlight why they should be documented on Wikipedia. Participants learnt about women artists through this; and were able to identify the ones they want to work on. We conducted an overview wikipedia-editing presentation after this. The entire process took a while and a larger section of the people did not stay back work on articles. Next time, we will be doing a shorter presentation of the women artists in the Museum instead of a walk, and focus on the content editing and creation.
Organizing a themed editathon was a great way to get new people engaged who are passionate about art and specifically female artists. In all cities, participants were very appreciative of the initiative. We plan to make this a regular feature and get more museums on board (as many expressed their interest in hosting Art+Feminism).

Regarding use of remaining funds:
editAs stated in the Discussion page, we got a go-ahead from WJifar (WMF) to use the funds in 2018; however the museum we approached, i.e Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, ended up funding the event as part of a last-minute decision to use their internal end-of-year funds. So no funds were used in 2018. In 2019, as we did not hear back from the Rapid Grants team, McKensie at Art+Feminism allowed us to use the remaining funds in 2019 :
