Goals

edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Despite the total number of participants that made it to the training, the participants showed a lot of appreciation for such a program. The quality o the trainings and other sessions such as the panel discussion were highly praised by the participants.

We are satisfied with the outcome of this project as we have been able to impart new skills, created the awareness of Wikipedia and its sister projects, introduced the idea of cross collaborating in the Open Movement in Ghana as members from the OSM, Open Data, Open Governance, Creative Commons, Linux and many more communities that imparted these participants.

Outcome

edit

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Create the awareness and increase the reach of Wikipedia. There were more than 30 participants who were introduced to Wikipedia and other sister projects. More than 30 people were trained on Wikipedia and other sister projects.
We expect to admit at least 50 participants. We achieved about 30 participants in attendance. We had 80+ people register for the event, however just 30 participants showed up.
We expect to create at least 10 articles. 5 articles were created days after the event. Due to the pressure on time we encouraged participants to actively contribute after the event, which resulted in this low number.
We expect to at least recruit 50% of participants as contributors to Wikipedia. About 90% of the total number of participants have been recruited and supported. We have been able to about 25 people into the community.
Ensure at least 10% of the total number become ambassadors of Wikipedia in their respective universities. Currently we have more than 5 of the participants who have been added to the community leading activities. 3 of such participants are discussing with their university to initiate a Wikipedia Education Program, while 1 led an activity that recruit about 10 new members to the group.
We expect to retain at least 10% of the number of participants as active editors. More than 25 of the participants have joined our community and actively supported by the community. There was a special group created on whats group to mentor them for a while and finally migrated onto the community whats app group.
We expect to have at least 10% of participants contribute to more than one platform within the open community. About 70% of the participants were able to contribute to at least two of the projects trained on (mostly Wikipedia and OSM) It was exciting to learn that participants were intrigued about the opportunities in the open movement and delighted to possess more than one skill in the movement.

Learning

edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  • Our earlier interaction with the university ensured a great deal of success with the venue for the event.
  • Adequately preparing for any possible issues with connecting with the projector ensured smooth transition of speakers.
  • Speakers were from diverse backgrounds and shared different opinions about the larger movement.
  • What did not work so well?
  • Caterers were often late which distorted break times and caused a distort in the program at some point.
  • Our social media engagements were weak on the day and couldn't generate the level of buzz we wanted.
  • What would you do differently next time?
  • Ensure that events start on time and avoid compromising on the time to make time for late comers.

Anything else

edit

Anything else you want to share about your project?

We got several requests from people outside Ghana who wanted to participate in the training. This affirmed our decision to host this event as it ascertained the need for such an umbrella event for the Open Movement.
