Goals
editDid you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
This was an engagement opportunity for existing Wikimedians and a learning process for new recruits with amazing photographers. We were able to increase content in terms of audio visuals about Ghana in terms of occupation on Wikipedia Commons and other sister projects. In addition, It is worth noting that we achieved 85% of our stated goals and contributed about 1,213 free licensed photo onto Commons.
Yes our project was successful! We were intrigued on how photographers kept attending our photowalks and edit sessions and also showing their appreciation for wikimedia commons. We believe they will be great contributors. Also, members who didn’t have appropriate gadgets such as laptops tried with every possible means to use their Tablets or borrow from friends just to learn and upload accordingly.
Outcome
editPlease report on your original project targets.
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
20 participants per photowalk | 10 | Even though 10 people participated in the photowalk, we had 15 people participate in the onsite upload and 123 uploaders in general. |
700 images | 1,220 images | We exceeded our target of 700 with over 520 more images during this competition. |
Use 20% of total images on Wikimedia projects | 3% | Even though we haven’t clearly met the target here, we anticipate meeting this target during the writing contest. |
Recruit and train new editors (photowalks, upload sessions and edit-a-thons) | 7 recruits | This was not stipulated in our targets, however 7 new participants were recruited and trained. This figure includes only those we physically trained or met, there could be more looking at the total number of uploaders. |
Engage existing editors to contribute to commons and its activities | 124 uploaders | The number of recruits from our activities was about 6% of the total number of uploaders, indicating that the number existing contributors could be about 94% of the total number of uploaders. Meaning that we enaged about 116 existing editors through our online campaign. |
Learning
editProjects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
- We had a lot of external participants this year and this was achieved through; social media campaigns, word of mouth and mass messaging via other mailing lists.
- We were also able to attract skilled photographers who were willing and ready to partake in our photowalks and as well contribute free licensed photos and audio visuals on wikimedia commons.
- Also, some new and existing members mostly volunteered to help capture some relevant pictures across certain parts of the country the team couldn’t capture, due to distance apart and time constraint.
- What did not work so well?
- It was rather difficult to capture all categories of the theme that is in terms of image gaps to articles on wikipedia. Participation on the other hand was lower than expected especially looking at the greater masses that signed up to attend all photowalks and edit-a-thons.
- Also, our inability to go to some distant areas across the country which had local workers who were producers of some amazing products limited the scope or variety of pictures captured.
- What would you do differently next time?
- Although we encouraged members to individually choose categories of images they wanted to capture aside our photowalks, they ended up opting for similar categories for example street hawkers were quite a lot hence eliminated some aspect of diversity in that regard.
- In future we will assign specific areas of the theme to members, to avoid capturing of similar and redundant pictures and to increase the pool of diversified pictures captured.
- Also, we will try to involve some governmental bodies who would serve as important reference of approval since it was rather difficult for some Industries to appreciate what we were doing by turning our ‘offer to capture their places of work’ down and dismissing us from their premises.

Anything else
editAnything else you want to share about your project?
We think it will be useful for capacities of communities to be built to be in charge of their own review process for the selection of photos at the country level. This allows immediate changes and supervision of the jury by the local teams to avoid lags during the process.
We were also unable to host the writing contest as suggested in our initial grant request, mainly because of lags in the completion of the selection process. We however wish to have this writing contest if permission is granted.
