Goals
editIn general we are happy on how the project in terms of exposure to youngsters that potentially might become actively engaged with the Albanian speaking community. We believe in this edition we did a good job many areas, especially:
- media coverage from a TV station (that has mainly a young audience), radio stations (National Broadcasting Radio Station), blogs and news portals;
- young audience that participated in the presentations and workshops that was not exposed before in any of the active Wikimedia projects;
- public administration official: we sent an official invitation to 8 institutions about the event and received positive feedback about our initiative;
During the second day of the event we also managed to have a meeting with very active Wikimedians and agreed on an action plan for 2017. We feel this was productive and helped the community agree on planning our activities more pro-actively in the months to come. Our first goals were to introduce as many participants as possible to Wikidata, but since the majority of the participants were newcomers they found it very advanced in terms of technical knowledge. This is one of the learnings for the next edition.
Outcome
editTarget outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
Number of total participants: 150 | 150 plus | this is an estimation of the total number of participants for both days. If we didn't have the issue with the venue (unannounced construction work on the entrance of the venue) we would definitely have more participants. |
Number of articles created or improved (if applicable): 250 | 561 improved / 73 new articles | this went really well in our opinion. |
Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (if applicable): 50 | 58 | Photos from the event can be found here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wiki_Weekend_Tirana_2016. |
Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects (if applicable): 50 | N/A | since the majority of the participants were new to the Wikimedia movement it was hard to get organized on a photo walk around the venue. |
Number of articles with geoinformation added: 50 | more than 400 | this was part of the Wiki Loves Maps project and participants seemed to really like it. |
Number of Wikidata enthusiasts: 5 (at least) | Wikidata was considered advanced knowledge from the participants and it was hard to convince them to continue contributing to the project. | |
Number of public officials from GLAM institutions: 5 (at least)) | 5 | we had a positive outcome on this one. The Minister of Innovation and Public Administration, 2 public officials from the Municipality of Tirana and also 2 officials from institutions related to the Ministry of Culture were present during the first day of the event. |
Learning
editProjects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
The event was organized at a technical school and almost half of the participants were students/pupils studying there. That means that all of them had very good computer skills and was really easy to communicate with them and teach them Wikipedia, saved us a lot of time since we concentrated only on teaching Wikipedia and not how to 'move' through the web. Also the fact that the majority of the participants were introduced to the Wikimedia community for the first time was one of the positive outcomes of the event.
- What did not work so well?
The location of the event. It was a bit outside of the city and some of the participants could find it. The public transportation was a also a problem since was only one bus which went that direction. In addition, there were some unannounced construction works on the road leading to the venue the first day of the event which influenced the number of the participants.
- What would you do differently next time?
Would definitely find another venue that is somehow related to a school or university, but also is in the city center. In addition, would plan one more day for a meetup with more experienced Albanian speaking Wikimedians to discuss about the challenges and the plans of the community.
