Goals
editDid you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? Yes, we met our goals and I'm delighted about how the event went.
Outcome
editPlease report on your original project targets.
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
Socialize with community members, these include Wikimedians and other open access advocates. | We were able to bring about interaction between the students, researchers, academic staff and Wikimedians. | Participants were able to interact and gain insight into the purpose and ideals of the wikimedia community. |
Recruit new editors by educating them through a workshop on how to use the Wikimedia tools for advancing the web data and contributing to wikimedia projects. | The interest of students have been drawn towards Wikipedia editing and open sharing of science and research information. | |
Engage faculty members and draw their interest towards the advantages of an open access policy. We hope to have a minimum of five top faculty officers and other lecturers present in the meeting. | We had a population of fourteen faculty officials. | They joined in deliberating on strategies to adopt towards achieving a University-wide adoption of an open access policy. |
Participants would build a local community where we would work on open science projects, discuss and share ideas. | 389 total attendees (Including volunteers & organizers) | We were able to strengthen our community with an additional 264 new members who now constitute an integral part of the open access community in Nigeria and new ideas and collaborations are emerging. |
Encourage open practices in regards to knowledge sharing amongst students, researchers and early career professionals. | We successfully achieved this goal through the relevant keynotes on these topics. | This include keynotes on Open data in Academic research, CC licensing and Advantages of platforms like WikiData. |
Learning
editProjects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well? We had supporters from the Wikimedia UG Nigeria and the OpenCon community who helped with ideas and efforts in putting things in perspective.
- What did not work so well? The attendees were eager to learn more and wish they had a more extensive training time to better improve their expertise in using Wikimedia tools.
- What would you do differently next time?
Next time, we aim at hosting a week-long training where students from different fields will be taught extensively on how to use the Wikimedia tools and recruited as editors. I hope to work with the Wikimedia UG Nigeria to achieve this.

Yes, N4,800 - $15
Since the balance is small, We suggests that we channel the balance as additional support for the Wikipedia week-long editor skill training we are planning to hold on Open Access week in November, 2017.
Anything else
editAnything else you want to share about your project? We learned through interactions and feedback from this event that there is a large population of students on campus who would love to support the Wikimedia movement but they find it a little complicated to navigate but with training and orientation a lot can be achieved. We therefore hope to fill that gap in the coming months. I've uploaded pictures of the event to WikiCommons and I'll be putting the links here shortly.
