Project Goal

edit

Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".

I started working with a member of the Farsi community on digitizing and storing Iranian oral history project in Wikimedia Commons. However due to the language barrier (I can help with the technical parts, but can neither read, write nor speak Farsi) it is hard to collaborate on this remotely. We want to take the opportunity of the volunteer from the Farsi community being in Europe for a conference to extend his stay and work with me in Vienna on the project. This would also be a great way, to promote online volunteering among Iranian and Afghan expats in Austria: Many Afghan and Iranian diaspora live in Austria, the total number of these communities is around 100.000 people. They have been detached from their country and their language, we are aiming to get closer to this community and build relations to work together to use Wikipedia as tool to keep them connected to their own language and enrich the WMF projects with their capabilities.

Project Plan

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

In the oral history project we are planning to digitize and convert and upload 50 hours of very high quality videos to Wikimedia commons and categorize them and use them in related articles, if successful we are planning to work more on this project and document other part of oral history (The project provides scholars/Wiki[pe|me]dians/historians working on contemporary political history of Iran with primary source material consisting of personal accounts and views of individuals who either played major roles in important political events and decisions during iranian 1979 revolution and afterwards or witnessed these events from close range.), also all part of digital work would be typed and inserted to wiki source that is more searchable and findable for those who can not watch long videos. Created files would be added to related Wikipedia articles and enhance quality of those articles.
In the context of our community building activities, diaspora would have opportunity to learn and understand importance of Wikipedia and how It could help them keep their language knowledge alive. We are seeking to work with multiple university teachers and institutes.

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

For the specific content outcomes please see below :)
Wikimedia Austria will aim to organise follow-up events with interested people involved in the projects.
