Goals
editDid you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
YES. I am happy that Wikipedia editathon which aimed at creating Wikipedia awareness to Tanzania was done successfully and the goal was met at the higher percentage. An editathon took place at Buni Innovation Hub. Most of the existing editors attended as well as new editors. The event started a little late from the expected time due to traffic issues which faced participants from their different respective areas. We used some time to remind the group about Wikipedia and its sister projects, five pillars of Wikipedia and functionalities used in editing Wikipedia. After that we focused our editathon on translating and adding contents about some selected notable Tanzanian women from enwiki to swwiki.
Outcome
editPlease report on your original project targets.
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
1 event | 1 event | |
16 participants | 20 participants | |
6 new editors | 5 new editors | Some participants who confirmed to attend got an emergency, hence didn’t come. |
10 articles created or improved | 26 articles created or improved | There was more work focused on training new editors by translating articles about some notable women in Tanzania from enwiki to swwiki. |
10 repeat participants | 15 repeat participants | We counted this as participants that came to more than 5 times. |
Learning
editProjects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
We were lucky to have one media coverage (Zanzibar Corporation Broadcasting). We were able to create the awareness of Wikipedia and its sister projects through an interview with this media concerning some questions about what we do. Some of these questions from the media were: What is Wikipedia? How does Wikipedia is of importance to the community? How can someone distinguish between Wikipedia from other social medias in terms of verifiability of its contents? What kind of skills is needed for someone to become a Wikipedia editor? What is the background of Swahili Wikipedia in Africa?
Also, we used this event to discuss how the group can develop in terms of getting new people involved in volunteering to do different Wikimedia projects.
- What did not work so well?
Some participants didn’t come on time hence the timetable expected had to be dragged. This caused the editathon to skip some of the pieces of training and the editathon ended a little late from the time intended to end it. There was some difficulties to customize some of the English Infobox into swahili contents.
- What would you do differently next time?
- Preview of the infoboxes of the expected articles to be made so as to see its working before an editathon. This goes in line with looking for the possibility to collaborate with Wikimedians who are developers who can help to create editing functionalities which best fit the Swahili language.
- The possibility of having local travel coverage to make participants come early in events.
- Starting early to make the community know about an event.
