Project Plan
editActivities
editTell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
We are planning on doing a single editathon, with a training session for newcomers before the edit-a-thon begins. The training will be held a few days before the edit-a-thon, and a second training will occur the morning of the edit-a-thon.
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
We are going to alert faculty and students of Rice University through relevant Facebook events, twitter, listserv e-mails, flyers, and an advertisement in our school newspaper, The Thresher.
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
We have five participants who have become proficient Wikipedia editors through a class that paired with the Wiki education foundation.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
Each participant will be asked to bring their own laptop computer, which should not be a barrier as nearly all students and faculty have a laptop. Through Rice University we have access to many online database sources and journals. Our club also has a private library which we will have available to participants.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)? After the event we will promote the event contributions on our Facebook and twitter accounts to engage participants and other members of our community. We will also send out a survey to everyone who comes to the event to ask them about how they felt about the edit-a-thon and whether or not they would participate or edit Wikipedia again.
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
This project is to add to information about LGBT or Queer history, persons, or other related information. I believe that Rice University is a great place to engage individuals to use Wikipedia because we are well educated, diverse (academically, racially, sexual orientation, etc. etc.) and we are beginning to cultivate a presence of students interested in Wikipedia, partially because Diana Strassmann, the chair of the Wiki Education Foundation, is a professor at our university. The purpose of this is not only to improve content on LGBT issues, but build an interest in many students to continue Wikipedia editing, a cause I am very passionate about.
Impact
editHow will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- Number of events: 1
- Number of participants: 30
- Number of new editors: 25
- Number of of articles created or improved: 50
- Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events)
Resources
editWhat resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding). This project is being organized through the Rice Queer Resource Center, a club at Rice University. We have a small library full of resources for queer books as well as some (wo)man power. We also are able to provide the cost for our promotional materials and advertising. We are mostly asking for money to be able to feed the students who come to the event, as we believe this will draw many more people.
What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
- Educational materials such as the "Editing Wikipedia" brochure
- 50 pack of Wikipedia stickers from the Wikipedia store- $25 (the wikipedia store is down right now so the actual amount could be lower)
- Lunch catered from local restaurant, Thai Spice, in Houston, Texas.- $275
- Total Cost: $300

- I totally endorse this project request. A growing number of Rice students are becoming Wikipedians and this event will help more students see the potential impact of Wikipedia. I anticipate an extremely successful event! DStrassmann (talk) 01:54, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
