Goals

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? Yes. We met our goals and we are happy with the way the project went. There was a good turn out of participants. There was light, internet connectivity and a welcoming environment. Participants were happy for being part of the program. Thanks to the Wikimedia Foundation for making the grant fund available on time.

(This refers to people that have been participating in all Wikipedia events in the University since 2017) 0. 7 Many participants love contributing to Wikipedia and are willing to participate in Wikipedia events in the university. Moreover, the manner ( Serene environment and dignified relationship among participants) in which Wikipedia events are organized in the University attract many repeat participants of this category.


Learning

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
Many things worked well. There was a good turnout of participants (57 against the 30 we proposed). There was light, internet connectivity, laptops for participants without personal laptops, lunch and an inviting environment. Topics to edit were pre-selected and made available to participants through WhatsApp. To show mastery of the training, many participants on their own, assigned topics to themselves through the "assign yourself an article" button on the dashboard. People were able to contribute both text and images. It was all fun.
  • What did not work so well?
The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) strike affected the program seriously. The strike force the program to be carried outside the university environment. This is because it is against ASUU rule for academic programs of any sort to be held in the university premises within strike. Hosting the program outside the university deprived us of some of the luxurious we enjoy in the university environment at Nsukka. For instance, the cheap cost of using the library computer laboratory (NGN25,000 per day for the 360 sitter computer laboratory against the NGN35,000 we paid in a hotel hall with only tables and chairs). We were forced to be moving computers and other gadgets used for the training and edit-a-thon to and fro throughout the four days of the program ( two trainings and two edit-a-thons). The strike made things very difficult for us. Instead of the two flex banners we budgeted for, we made three. One was placed at the University gate, one at the University library to re-direct participants to the new venue and one at the hotel gate (new venue). The shift in venue placed so much stress on the organizers.

Furthermore, the good turnout of participants meant that we have to manage the resources budgeted for 30 persons for 57 persons despite the additional cost in venue. The tea break which we proposed to use meat pie was reduced to garden eggs, peanuts and biscuits. The quality of the lunch was reduced from NGN2500.00 per plate to NGN2000.The number of support staff such as cleaner and technical assistant were reduced to one each. Customized face masks were dropped in favor of the commonly available one in the market. However, we were excited that despite all the odds, we were able to pull through. The participants were happy and so where the facilitators.

  • What would you do differently next time?
Next time, I will not depend on assumptions. We will face the situation squarely and on time. Initially, we believed that the strike will come to an end before the commencement of the program. From there, we assumed that if we appeal to the ASUU chairman, that he will permit us to hold the program within the campus. It was until all these assumptions failed, that we started exploring the idea of hosting the program outside the university campus. By that time, time was against us. We started running halter skater to find an alternative venue. Next time too, in preparing our budget, we have to make allowance for unforeseen expenses.
