Project Goal

edit

Semana i is an annual event when students at all campuses of Tec de Monterrey work on a chosen project rather than attend class. Wiki activities have been part of Semana i since the first one in Sept 2015. Our most successful work has been contributing to Wikimedia Commons, photos, video and audio. This year the Ciudad de México campus will be working with Wikisource (one project) related to Gothic literature in English and one to add content from the Biblioteca Cervantina, the Tec's special collection of antique books and documents) We have a new campus which we are recruiting for Wiki work in general, which will do a Wiki expedition to the Sima de las Cotorras geological formation. Our goals are to further develop our collaboration with the Biblioteca Cervantina (which started small in Sept 2016), and start sustainable wiki activity on the Chiapas campus

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

Organizers are TONYchainsaw, Nutriesilla and Lourdes Epstein (with musical recording director Alejandro Ramos), Sary.ruiz and Liz Truve, each of whom is in charge (titular) for one particular project. TONYchainsaw - Gothic literature short stories in Wikisource, Nutriesilla - Wikisource with the Biblioteca Cervantina and Lourdes Epstein - recording Mexican folk music with volunteer musicians (very similar to the project last year), and Sary.ruiz/Liz Truve - Wiki expedición at Sima de las Cotorras, Chiapas. We have been doing preparatory work since January 2017 and all projects have been approved by the Tec de Monterrey administration.

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

We have already made contacts with people in Wikisource, mostly through Facebook. Nutriesilla will be at Wikimania in Montreal to continue this process.

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

Uploaded and transcribed about 10 19th century short stories in English. About 500 pages from historical documents/texts from the Biblioteca Cervantina, with support from paleographists. Record and upload about 3 or 4 Mexican folk songs (out of copyright), recorded by volunteer muscians and donated into Creative Commons. About 900 photos in and around the Sima de las Cotorras biological reserve, including plants, birds and geological formations. Estimated 120 students with a total of about 15 or so teachers in two Mexican states.

Impact

edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:

  1. Number of total participants - 120 students and about 20 teachers
  2. Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (if applicable) - 900 + almost all of which will be from Chiapas along with photos documenting the other work
  3. Number of documents/pages unto Wikisource - We have requested about 20 documents from the Biblioteca Cervantina and downloaded 5 Gothic stories. Look for about 100 pages + transcribed with at least have of that in the "corrected" stage.

Resources

edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is the organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

The Tec de Monterrey provides much in the way of in-kind donations of money and equipment. They have already sent Thelmadatter and Nutriesilla to both Campus Chiapas and Campus Monterrey (main site of the Biblioteca Cervantina) for preparations and staff training. Space, wi-fi connection and student transport when applicable (mostly Chiapas) is covered by the institution along with equipment needed for professional quality music recording.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense:

  • 2000 MXN (Mexican pesos) - Presentación by Professor José Luis Flores of Universidad Iberoamericana the migrant population from the Huasteca region to Mexico City and their music
  • 4000 MXN for Diego Torres of the Berklee College of Music for technical advice during the week - the recording of folk music is diffrent than modern pop. Our program only works with the latter
  • 6000 MXN - Travel expenses for the volunteer musicians (they are a professional band of Huasteca music) and their equipment
  • 3000 MXN - photographer Milton Arturo Ramírez Chiu for technical help for students documenting the Sima de las Cotorras in Chiapas. We are paying only part of the cost of this assistance. Campus Chiapas will pay the rest.
  • 3000 MXN - presentation by an expert from the National Archives of Mexico. We have a tentative agreement but not a firm answer on which expert it will be.

Total costs = 18,000 MXN
