Goals

edit

We have been organizing the Wiki Loves Monuments contest in Bangladesh since 2016. The main motivation behind participating in this international competition was that most of the protected monuments in Bangladesh haven't had the photographs under the free license. But now, we are gradually making progress. For example, in 2019 alone, the competition generated over 3862 photographs of 80+ protected sites. Another goal was to engage Bangladeshi photographers and motivate them to contribute to Wikimedia Commons. During the competition, 147 new users have signed up to Wikimedia Commons and 27 op them are still contributing to the Wikimedia projects more or less.

Outcome

Winners

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Number of participants: 150 213 Because of good press coverage and social media promotion the participation rate had been increased.
Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons: 2000 3862 After a month-long competition, Participants uploaded almost 4000 freely licensed photographs of 80+ different sites in Wikimedia Commons. We also received a few hundred photographs under this competition that were out of the scope of the contest but had other educational values.
Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects: 400 886 (22%) This photography contest had specific scope; listed protected sites only. Before the competition, there were only a handful of sites of Bangladesh that had photographs available on the internet and those sites were mostly from major cities and localities, let alone the availability of freely licensed photographs. Good quality photographs generated by this contest are now being used in multiple Wikimedia projects.
New user engaged: 0 147 (69%) We initially thought 40% of the participants will be new to Wikimedia projects but because of the promotion, the participation rate had been increased to 69%.

Press mentions

edit

Learning

edit
  • What worked well?

The press coverage about the event in local online and print media helped get more participation from around the country. We also reached local photography clubs and pursue them to participate. We also heavily promoted the competition on social media platforms as most photographers have a social media presence. This year we have also attracted more professional photographers. One of our photos placed 8th in the international competition.

  • What did not work so well?

The initial review process took a while than we anticipated before.

  • What would you do differently next time?

We'd motivate and ask more volunteers to help with the initial review before submitting them to the jury board.
