Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?

There exists a huge gap about African destinations on Wikivoyage and Wikipedia without any significant attempt at carrying out a complete overhaul and improvement. We are attempting to bridge the knowledge gap on travel information on the African continent and within African countries on Wikivoyage and Wikipedia. Our overall goal is to reduce the knowledge gap of travel information available on the English Wikivoyage and Wikipedia for Nigerian destinations (States, Cities and Towns) and highlighting the tourism potential in the various destinations. We also intend to update and improve the quality of existing articles, and position the English Wikivoyage as a reliable travel advisory for traveling in Nigeria. This is in line with the Wikimedia movement 2030 strategy recommendation of identifying topics for impact, and the following initiatives: list of high-impact topics, bridging content gaps and content initiatives in underrepresented communities

2. How will you let people know about the contest?

We will share with the Wikimedia community in Nigeria as well as the Wikimedia Fan Clubs in various Universities. We will also share this project on our social media pages to encourage participation by using paid promotions to reach a wider number of people.

3. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?
Note: Grantees, judges, and other contest leaders are ineligible to receive prizes. Grantees who are serving as judges may not receive gifts through grant funding.

The contest will be judge all the entries through a point based system on quality and quantity for pictures added, articles improved and created.

4. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects?

5. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

No

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This is a pilot project to improve the use of Wikivoyage in Nigeria and also encourage regular contributions by editors.

Endorsements

Community members are encouraged to endorse your project request here!

  • Support: I think this is a great endeavor, and I look forward to assisting with copy edits and edits for style as needed. Wikivoyage is very weak in its coverage of the vast African continent and Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and 6th most populous in the world, so it's very important for the worldwide project of Wikimedia to strengthen its coverage of the country as much as possible. Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:56, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
  • Support. I fully agree with Ikan Kekek. I'll add that coverage of Nigeria on Wikipedia is weak too, and I think this sounds like a good way to improve coverage on both sites. Mx. Granger (talk) 17:41, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
  • Support. Our coverage of Sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria, is generally weak, and as the most populous country in Africa, Nigeria certainly deserves better coverage. We need to strengthen our coverage of Sub-Saharan Africa as a global travel guide, and this is a great first step for us to embark on the road to doing so. The dog2 (talk) 22:04, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
  • Support. Developing a core group of African contributors will help correct the bias of Wikipedia and Wikivoyage toward Developed World subjects and perspectives to help these projects become truly global. Ground Zero (talk) 03:11, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
  • Support. This will be a big step towards improving coverage of the Global South on Wikimedian projects. Gizza (talkvoy) 01:05, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
  • Support - our Nigerian content definitely needs improvement. SHB2000 (talk | contibs | en.wikivoyage | w:User:SHB2000)
