This project seeks to apply an open access license to an upcoming academic article about Wikimedia projects.

Project Plan

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

Neither.

This project only seeks partial funding to pay an open access fee for an academic publication.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

grant notification is at these places:
  1. English Wikipedia Education Noticeboard - the paper is about university outreach
  2. English Wikipedia WikiProject Medicine - the paper is about medicine
  3. Wikimedia NYC's discussion forum - the project was in NYC with this wiki chapter
The event is the publication of the article. We will share it in channels including the following:
  1. presentation at WikiConference North America 2018
  2. en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine
  3. en:Health information on Wikipedia
  4. Wiki Project Med twitter
  5. en:Wikipedia:The Signpost

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

The authors of the paper have a history of Wikimedia engagement.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes. Two of the authors are professors at a school of physical therapy who have organized multiple Wikipedia editing events in the Wikipedia Education Program. The other author, bluerasberry, is an experienced Wikimedia editor and a participant in English Wikipedia's WikiProject Medicine.
The data on which this publication is based is reported on a Wiki project page at en:Wikipedia:Touro.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

This question is barely applicable.
We expect that future academic researchers in Wikimedia projects will cite this paper in their own publications. Also anyone who publishes in Wiki educational outreach, Wiki medicine, or wiki cohort evaluation can use this research as a precedent to cite in development of their own research. If the paper is open access then the paper itself will engage future participants more easily.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

It follows these Wikimedia guides -
  1. Learning patterns/Paying for an open license for academic research related to wiki
  2. Learning patterns/WMF Open Access Policy
  3. Learning patterns/Using open licenses

Impact

edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events
3 - presentations of academic paper at conferences
  2. Number of participants
600 - 100 people at conferences will attend a presentation on this research before end of 2018 and 500 readers will access the paper from 2018-2021
  3. Number of new editors
    0
  4. Number of of articles created or improved
    0
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events)
4 - estimated number of academic papers which will cite this one before 2021, based on precedent of citations to a similar academic paper

Resources

edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

  1. The Wiki activity is done - 3 classes in 3 years doing wiki editing of English Wikipedia physical therapy articles
  2. The article writing is done - will post to Wikimedia Commons when published
  3. Article submitted to publisher
  4. Open access fees are $3000 - we are covering $1000

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

$2000 - partial payment of open access publication fees at the standard publishing rate of 2,950

  • This is not a traditional rapid grant request, but it would be very worthwhile nevertheless. I am more than happy to endorse the application. --RexxS (talk) 16:53, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
  • It's a pity that scholarly publication costs authors so much money, but this will be a publication that will be significant in advancing understanding of what does and does not work in collaborations between Wikimedia projects and educational institutions. I strongly support this request. --Tryptofish (talk) 17:42, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
