Goals

edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? Though we did not hit our target in terms of numbers, we were able to get better quality photos this time around, we also got new people introduced to wikipedia.

Outcome

edit

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
50 participants 13 participants We couldn't find any photography schools in Kampala that we were hoping to engage
500+ photos uploaded 116 photos uploaded during September The big prize did not produce a big number of participants as expected
50 photos used on articles 5 photos used so far on articles in draft mode The number will increase with time as we encourage participants to create more articles.

Learning

edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

What worked well?

  • The big prize attracted professional photographers who uploaded better quality photos
  • We had an editathon where we created articles on the top ten monuments
  • We also had an editation where we created Wikidata items for the list of monuments in Uganda
  • We were able to hold local events and photo hunts in 5 different parts of the country, namely Kampala, Jinja, Fort Portal, Gulu, Kumi

What did not work so well?

  • For the 2019 edition, we made the prize for the top three photos bigger thinking it will attract more photographers to help us easily hit our target of 500+ photos but it did not happen.
  • We had a participant who had very many photos to upload but couldn't because his camera was copyrighted.

What would you do differently next time?

Next time we will reach out early at least months before the September to partners who can contribute like the ministry of tourism. Approaching them in September did not produce any results as they mentioned that they always make their plans earlier in the year.
