Project Plan

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?

The contest would be held as a national campaign of the Wiki Loves Monument international photography competition. We aim to improve the photographic coverage of monuments and historic buildings in Hong Kong, both in terms of quantity and quality. We also aim to boost the interest in Wikimedia projects and the User Group among the public in Hong Kong. This is the third edition of Wiki Loves Monuments held in Hong Kong, after a long hiatus from the two in 2013 and 2014, and the first edition under the administration of the User Group. (the 2 prior editions was held by the defunct Wikimedia chapter, Wikimedia Hong Kong)
Apart from that, we would like to achieve these intents:
To the public:
  • Improve the awareness of local heritage in Hong Kong
  • Enhance the visibility of Wikimedia projects and WMHKG
  • Introduce new users (especially photographers) to the Wikimedia movement, Wikimedia projects, and WMHKG
To the local Wikimedia community:
  • Improve the retention of veteran users and the cohesion between Hong Kong Wikimedians
To the User Group:
  • Cultivate new partnership opportunities and strengthen existing ones
  • Experiment the effectiveness of promotion methods
  • Gain experience in organizing contests and major events (this is the first time we organize a “Wiki Loves” campaign by ourselves)
  • Train new community members to work in planning and project execution roles (we have little people dedicated to these roles)

2. How will you let people know about the contest?

Our previous events were plagued by low participation. Our community growth was also unsatisfactory, with very few new users successfully recruited under our efforts. Previous events have only relied on on-wiki promotion, which has constantly failed to reach people not in, or new to the “wiki-sphere”. Therefore, we believe that a more proactive approach should be used to promote this event.
What we intended to do in the promotion phase of the event:
  • On-wiki promotion
  • Event posters and flyers (collaborate with small businesses and cultural venues)
  • Online and social media campaigns (Facebook, Instagram)
  • Press releases
After the contest, we would organize a mini-exhibition in collaboration with local cultural venues.

3. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?

We are expected to receive ~1000 photos during the contest. Referring to previous editions, we would have to decide on the finalists (10 entries) by the end of October. The first round of the judging would be conducted by the event team. Our target is to screen the best 5-10% of the entries to enter the second round.
In the second round, we would invite stakeholders from our GLAM partners, local universities, and photography organizations as our external jurors. We would jointly decide on the 10 finalists and the ranks. As no monetary reimbursement would be provided to external jurors, the work allocated to each juror should be at most 1 hour.
After releasing the results in early November, we would award prizes to the 10 finalists. The prizes include gift vouchers for photography supplies, certificates, and swags from the Wikipedia Store. The prizes would be distributed to the winners by mail, or in a small prize ceremony held concurrently with the post-contest edit-a-thon.

4. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects?

During the contest, we would stress the importance of proper file naming and categorization to the participants. We may consider adding such requirements into the contest rules.
We would also organize an edit-a-thon after photo collection (Tentative date: November 2020) to put newly-added photos to use in Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia and Wikivoyage. However, it would depend on the progression of COVID-19, as in-person gatherings shall not be held if the pandemic has yet to end.

5. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

In line with the decision by the WMF regarding funded in-person events during the COVID-19 pandemic, we do not intend to organize any in-person offline events before at least 15 September 2020. The only planned in-person event is a prize ceremony and an edit-a-thon, which held concurrently in November 2020. In case that the pandemic has not receded in Hong Kong by November (which is very unlikely), we would cancel the event or switch to an online format.

Impact

edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more:

  1. Number of participants: 100+
  2. Proportion of new users: 30%+ of all participants
  3. Number of photos uploaded: 1000+
  4. Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects: 100+

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
