Goals
editDid you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
Yes, we did meet most important goals and organized a successful Wiki Loves monuments contest for the second time.
Another part of grant was for microgrants program which dod not meet set goals, but we saw positive outcome in community engagement.
Outcome
editPlease report on your original project targets.
- Wiki Loves Monuments Latvia 2016
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
2000 photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons | 2189 photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons | We exceeded out goal by a small margin despite having bigger umber last year. Mostly it was because our top contributors uploaded less images. |
50 participants uploading a photo | 47 participants uploading a photo | We nearly reached our goal, but again the number was less than last year. |
25 newly registered participants | 20 newly registered participants | We nearly reached our goal, but the number was two times lower than last year. |
10% distinct photos used in Wikipedia articles | 31.84% distinct photos used in Wikipedia articles | Pictures are mostly used in Latvian Wikipedia. The reason for this very high number is that images were added to monument lists. 28.21% from last years pictures are currently used. |
mentions in 5 different web sites | 3 notable media mentions, several less notable websites | Preparing press release before and after contest helped to get in these notable media. |
- Microgrants pilot project
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
10 microgrant projects submitted and accepted | 2 projects submitted and accepted (one was canceled) | Both projects were wiki-expeditions, one was canceled a day before planned date because of problems with car. |
5 distinct users completing a project | 1 user completed a project |
Learning
editProjects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- Wiki Loves Monuments Latvia 2016
- What worked well?
- We found excellent awards ceremony venue (national History museum) for low cost (20 EUR/h with presentation equipment included) that we might use for future events.
- Generally we received a good amount of pictures, meeting our goals.
- We put effort in writing press releases at start and end of WLM contest and sent it to press agencies and each time prominent media (2 big news sites and national radio station) picked it up.
- Partnership with government monument agency was well developed, even some of their employees took part in contest. They aso helped to promote it.
- What did not work so well?
- We did not find a prominent place to display out winners photos as we were hoping for, so we decided not to print them.
- Organizing jury work took a lot of time and there were multiple delays.
- Using at that time experimental beta version of Montage jury tool took more time as bugs were discovered.
- What would you do differently next time?
- We would organize jury better by arranging on-site work with people outside Wikimedia movement and put more effort to explain unclear things.
- Try to find a partner organization which could attract people with different backgrounds. It seems that we have reached limit with our current approach at promoting the contest.
- Microgrants
- What worked well?
- Program was well received and clear rules created for it. Reimbursement of costs after completing self defined project plan excluded risk of wasting money. General structure was created using similar program in Wikimedia Polska.
- What did not work so well?
- It turned out that the only type of microgrants community is currently interested in is wiki-expeditions. The chosen period (September to March) is not well suited to this type of event due to weather conditions here.
- What would you do differently next time?
- During talks in meetups members of community expressed their interest in organizing more wiki-expeditions during warmer months, urging me to renew microgrants program for another term. Next time I would put more effort in explaining microgrants program in person with potential applicants.
- Goals were set too high, next time these would be more modest.
Finances
editGrant funds spent
editPlease describe how much grant money you spent for approved expenses, and tell us what you spent it on.
Funds were spent mostly for prizes of competition, smaller amount was used to organize awards ceremony and related wikiexpedition (only fuel costs covered) and very small amount was reimbursed as a microgrant.
Budget
editAll costs are displayed in EUR. Sums in USD calculated using exchange rate at the start of grant.
