Project Plan
editActivities
editTell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
USF SOLIS plans to host a series of up to 3 Wikipedia edit-a-thons during the Spring 2017 semester under the name WikiEquality in order to promote human rights and social justice through themed editing events.
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
Various promotional platforms will be used. Since SOLIS is a student organization at USF, we will reach out to school-wide news outlets, such as the weekly Note-A-Bull newsletter and the USF School of Information listserv. We plan to produce fliers for each event also. Our first edit-a-thon event will take place at a local public library, so we will reach out to local news outlets like The Tampa Bay Times and other nearby colleges and universities as well to increase participation outside of the USF population.
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
Several LIS students from USF, including myself, have taken a course called Wikipedia & Knowledge Management, for which we all completed at least 100 edits and/or created multiple articles throughout the semester. I, in addition to others from SOLIS or within the library program who have some experience editing Wikipedia, will lead the events.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
Participants will be required to bring their own laptop computers with them for the events. The event space for our first edit-a-thon is equipped with a projector that we can use if needed.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
We will collect email addresses on a voluntary basis to contact participants regarding future events. We will also develop a survey to send to participants following each event to gauge their interest in and their thoughts on the events.
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
USF SOLIS's 2017 WikiEquality Series will focus on human rights and social justice. Our goal is to increase interest in editing and adding information to Wikipedia in order to improve the site's quality while also increasing the diversity of content represented and the people editing that content.
Impact
editHow will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- Number of events
- 3
- Number of participants
- 15+
- Number of new editors
- 5
- Number of articles created or improved
- 3-5 per event
- Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events)

Resources
edit- What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
SOLIS has a designated budget through Student Government for all events throughout the year but is limited for individual events, particularly in terms of marketing. Three executive members from SOLIS are responsible for this event, although I am the main organizer. I have already received confirmation for the time, date, and location of our first edit-a-thon, and I am working on putting together a promotional package, including social media messages, a press release, emails to various news sources and relevant contacts, and a follow-up survey, in addition to print fliers.
- What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
Items listed per event:
- - $25 room fee for food
- - $75 for food
- - $50 promotional budget
- Total of 3 events at $150/event = $450 total
