Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are doing one edit-a-thon that will occur from 11-6pm on March 10, 2018

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

We have made a Facebook event, and will advertise through our newsletter, through other artist-run-centres in our communities, as well as through our local arts college. We have created a Dashboard for the event on the Art + Feminism website. We will also reach out to local gender + technology organizations, and to computer science departments at local universities and colleges.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

Yes, we have two experienced Wiki editors, and we will also have the gallery director and an event intern to assist with other logistics such as setup, advertising, food, childcare, etc.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Participants are asked to bring a laptop with them. For those that do not have access to laptops, we will offer the use of one of our coordinator's laptops and one of our in-office computers. Folks without laptops are also encouraged to team up with someone who has a laptop.
We will have two experienced Wikimedians who will support those with less or no experience editing wikis. We will provide some resources for folks to look over before the event, and will have a projector available for demonstrations. We are excited for those with more skills to share with editors with less/no editing skills.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will create a newsletter sign-up for those who are interested at the event, and can follow up with them on our progress and further edit-a-thons in the future. The two interns for this event will monitor the changes that have been made to the Wiki articles.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Several other artist-run-centres have held edit-a-thon events in Calgary with great success; however, we still feel that there is much work to do, especially in regard to local women artists, and especially people of colour and Indigenous Canadian artists. We have already compiled a comprehensive list of articles we would like to create and edit. We are excited to contribute to Wiki editing fluency and to diversify the representation of artists on the internet!

Impact

edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 1
  2. Number of participants: 15
  3. Number of new editors: 10
  4. Number of of articles created or improved: 30
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): n/a

Resources

edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

This project is organized by Untitled Art Society in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Untitled Art Society has hired two interns through Volunteer Alberta's SCIP internship project, which will pay a total of $1000 of funding to support the interns' hourly wage related to organizing this event. These interns are gaining valuable experience as they are organizing all logistics of the event (childcare, venue, advertising, set-up, take-down, liaising with community organizations, event logistics). One of these interns is an experienced Wiki editor, and the other has close ties with the community. Besides the monetary funding from SCIP, the rest of the support we will receive is in-kind. As we are hosting the event at the gallery, the space is free. Untitled is also proving resources in-kind such as laptops, a projector, and other equipment and resources. We have two experienced Wikimedians who will attend the event, and two logistics/event planner folks.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

  • Food and drink = $200
  • Child care = 7 hrs x $20/hr = $140
  • Miscellaneous supplies = (name tags, printing cheatsheets, decorations etc.) = $100
  • Chair and table rental = 12 chairs and two tables, plus delivery and pickup = $80
  • Transit ticket reimbursement for participants = $6.60 (roundtrip) x 10 = $66
    • TOTAL: $586 CAD
