Digital literacy for Student-Teacher
  1. Organize a workshop to build information literacy in professional development for the student-teacher.
  2. Developing a friendly and collaborative work environment through Wikimedia Education
  3. Aim to improve digital literacy in local context using Wikimedia Education.
  4. Promote e-learning and technology with Wikimedia projects(wikipedia, commons, wikidata etc.)

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

Activities 1
In this workshop participants have basic digital literacy for their daily work, but they don’t know about the Wikimedia projects and e-learning technology to improve digital literacy in their local environment which may lead friendly and collaborative access in their learning activities.

Introduction Phase (15 min) Discuss any collaborative tools that are in your learning environment and the idea about e-learning technology in their learning activities. Introduce each other with some digital literacy techniques.

Presentation (15 min) A presentation about digital literacy values, importance and its demand for the 21st-century environment by organizer

Discussion (1hr) Discuss the Wikimedia projects. Where we will discuss:

  • How to register Wikimedia
  • How to secure Wikimedia login
  • What is copyright
  • How to share content and collaborate other through the wiki.
  • How Wikimedia projects can help teach students to stay safe inside the classroom and out.
  • Teach students about the benefits and risks of the online world and help students stay safer there.

Break 15 min (refreshment) provide tea with an informal discussion
Collaborative discussion /panel discussion (20 min) Q/A session based on digital literacy, e-learning as well as Wikipedia core values & importance panel will answer participant quarries.

Simple quiz (5 min) for evaluation /post-workshop survey
Activities 2
Training Session (3hr): This training session(draft) will be focused on how to:

  • Add, edit, contribute, an engaging student teacher in interactions with learning materials
  • Providing opportunities for them to observe the results of their manipulations in Wikimedia
  • Integrate new ideas with prior knowledge to make meaning and enable learning through the reflection in Wikimedia.
  • Build wiki club for student-teacher professional and leadership development in Wikimedia.

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

This project is totally based on college students for that we will inform college administration by face to face discussion talking with Department Head as well as faculty and some students also. Not only that we will inform the community through social media like facebook, twitter, WhatsApp and so on.

We will select Tribhuvan University Faculty of Education Bachelor’s students of two campuses: Sanothimi Campus and Mahendra Ratna Campus. These campuses are produced by well-qualified teacher Students for future Teacher at School Education. Near future, all student-teacher advocate Wikimedia project in school education. So I choose these specific audiences and other factor future teacher also helps to fulfill the digital literacy gap in 21st-century education skills. In the other hands, I am also a participant in the Wikimedia & Education Greenhouse online course.

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

We will build wiki clubs for or the sustainability of this project, we will establish a wiki group of students to establish the further Wikipedia activities in coming days at the same or other institution as well if wiki provides lots of support for that. We are expected to train around 60 to 80 students from two (Sanothimi Campus and Mahendra Ratna Campus) educational institutions. We will be regular touch through different social media.

  • These participants will demonstrate and aware the use of Wikimedia in classroom teaching in different subjects.
  • These participants will use a wiki system map or wiki block to identify the components of the education system.
  • These participants will promote wiki enables learning and seek feedback from users for future learning capacity building.

I don't see this event being much fruitful. As someone from the same country and as someone who has been involved in many Wikimedia projects, I see this program as somewhat waste of grant. Firstly, I think the school programs are useful but doing is this way it completely ineffective in my opinion. If teachers and school administration agree then it can be done as a Project work for students where students are guided by teachers to write or improve Wikipedia articles under guidance which is later improved by the teachers and an experienced team and the necessary information and instruction can be provided. I would prefer if such a program is done in collaboration with the campus and many campuses agree to do such a program, they provide the venue and volunteers and basic resources. I think wasting 40000 on the venue is not necessary, just think how much interest the college administration/college has to learn when they are charging us this much (this is a lot in Nepal) and I think digital literacy is also a responsibility of an institution. IMO, Gifts and T-shirts serve no need here. I   Oppose this grant and request WMF to take all the factors into consideration while processing this Grant.   • Thank you for your comment. I am always welcome to share knowledge to student-teacher during the event. Firstly, did you know about Wikimedia Education Program it is not only outreach and write or improve Wikipedia articles. WEP aims to engage with Wikimedia projects and to gain 21st century learning skills. How to edit Wikipedia and then assign students to edit Wikipedia as part of their course. Which need basic digital Literacy which is the basic phase of WEP. This proposal based on Wikimedia movement and quality education Sustainable Development Goals 2030. About the cost of already mention provided by campus but it is not only one-day information session. It is minimum two-day increases depends upon participants. So I think the cost of venue 10000NPR/day (Meeting hall, Training hall, Lab, OHP, and support) is not overcharged. About T-shirts, it’s only for volunteers and gift provided as a motivation factor without motivation we cant sustainable our goals. Well, I understand what you are trying to say here. The problem we have is social media reaching to people before digital educational resources, because of this knowledge about the internet is limited to the use of social media. But some countries have way passed the phase in which people needed to be made aware of online resources. From the perspective of those countries, Wikipedia is not reliable for information and must not be used as a primary/main source of information and educational institutions discourage the use of Wikipedia for the information they need. The fact that Wikipedia has become unreliable is as clear as daylight from all the evidence that can be observed. The vandalism, spam, incorrect information, original research keeps on being added to pages and instead of pages becoming better they are becoming less and less reliable. Do you think it will be safe to promote the digital literacy surrounding wiki-projects? What do you suggest should be done? I think doing this program when the collage is charging for their resources to educate their students for the matter as basic as digital literacy (basic at this age) and when they need to be motivated through gifts is still a good idea. I don't think to do this as instructed is a good idea as well, there are several institutes which provide the resources as I mentioned above why not do this with one of them, I think this can be done in the cost of tea and refreshments if we do it that way. Someone I admire said "Wikipedia is something special. It is like a library or a public park. It is like a temple for the mind. It is a place we can all go to think, to learn, to share our knowledge with others." Thank you for comment.First of all, I need to clarify what is Student-Teacher. A student-teacher (practice teacher) is a college, university or graduate student who is teaching under the supervision of a certified teacher in order to qualify for a degree in education. Student-teacher is our project target audience. this is where digital literacy comes into play. Digital literacy is not about knowing how to use a computer, but the ability to comprehend and use information via the Internet and other digital technologies. Digital literacyBecauseof student-teacher engages with the student in the future. Digital literacy also a basic need of using social media, use of the internet, learning, etc.   Are you talking about Wikipedia only but I am talking about Wikimedia projects (Commons, Mediawiki, Wikidata, WLM, WLE, test Wikipedia etc) intergrade to learn digital literate see here draft. You can also help to modify/improve learning content. Protecting privacy: Passwords, scams and protecting private information, vandalism, spams, incorrect information, Copyright and plagiarism, cyberbullying, Piracy and policy, etc. Without digital literacy, all these things occur in direct start to edit articles and become public park so first things need Digital literate. I understand what the goals are here and I appreciate the work you are putting into it. But I still think the event should be done in cooperation with the campus regarding the venue and it's probably best if students volunteer during the event as well (IMO mutual enthusiasm and interest are necessary, I think due to the lack of these things our educational programs haven't been able to be effective). If we use gifts etc it will probably look like we are trying to promote/advertise the movement with is not our goal. I think the event should just focus on letting people know about digital literacy and Wikimedia and what we do, to participate or not is their choice. It's pretty complicated to tell people about digital literacy through the Wikimedia movement since you know wikis aren't very reliable, so it needs to be planned well.
