Project Goal

edit

Wikimedians of Romania and Moldova User Group (WMROMD) has in its plan for 2021 a series of projects focused on historical subjects, that will be developed in partnership with some of the most important universities and other cultural and scientific institutions.

The program supports achievement of some of the main strategic objectives of the WMROMD-UG, namely to develop writing of good quality content on Romanian Wikipedia as well as to alleviate structural geographical gap, by attracting contributors from those region of our countries (Romania and Republic of Moldova) that are underrepresented in Romanian Wikipedia today. In this respect, we will follow the next operational goals:

  1. Raising awareness about Wikimedia projects and WMROMD projects
  2. Increasing the level of integration between the Wikipedians from Romania and Republic of Moldova and exchanging the good practices and lessons learned
  3. Persuading the Academic institutions and associations about the value in training their members to improve Wikipedia articles related to the discipline
  4. Increasing the level of integration and acceptance of Romanian Wikipedia in the local cultural and scientific communities
  5. Encouraging potential contributors to participate and recruiting new subject-matter editors
  6. Alleviating the existing gender gap on Romanian Wikipedia
  7. Developing skills for existing editors
  8. Creating or improving a significant numbers of articles related to different area of interest
  9. Demonstrating and learning how collective editing works
  10. Providing quality training and support for the new editors
  11. Developing a friendly and collaborative work environment

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

The Wiki History Program 2021 includes the next projectsː
- 2 ”train the trainers” workshops (in person, 6 persons)
- 2 online editathons
- 1 online writing contest
  • ”Personalities from the Republic of Moldova” - developed in partnership with the University from Chișinău.
- 2 ”train the trainers” workshops (in person, 4 persons)
- 2 online editathons
- 1 online writing contest

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

Yes. The project will be coordinated by Macreanu Iulian and supported the members of Wikimedians of Romania and Moldova User Group as well as by the editors that were trained during the activities from 2018.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

From our previous experience and having in mind the specificity of each project, we expect that some people will require a specific training, on such issues as writing texts and creating the basic structure of Wikipedia articles. For this reason, we planned a brief training session at the beginning of the editathons, as well as a dedicated training workshop within for each project.
We try to ensure that the majority of participants have their personal equipment to edit. In case this does not happen, we are able to make available some tablets.
We expect to have free access to the internet for all the activities that will be carried out in Romania, but we expect to have some issues with the internet access for the activities that will be developed in Republic of Moldova.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

Our intention is to follow a series of activities, such as:

  • sending a welcome message to new editors after the event
  • monitoring the work done by new editors between the edtitahons so they can answer questions and offer feedback; most probably using hashtags in edit descriptions
  • disseminating the results through articles in Wikipedia, photographs and media release
  • implement a mailing list for sending informative and motivating emails to the subscribers.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

The project is part of the third Annual Plan of the Wikimedians of Romania and Moldova User Group.

Impact

edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events - minimum 3
  2. Number of participants - minimum 30/program
  3. Number of new editors - minimum 20/program
  4. Number of of articles created or improved - minimum 150
