Wiki Women for Women Wellbeing 2018

General overview

Background

The event was proposed during the Wiki Advanced Training at Ranchi in 2018. This was initially planned to be a month long edit-a-thon for women by women where different Indian Communities and Maithili Communities of Nepal came together for a joint cause of creating content related to women health issues and also to explore women leadership. But because a number of wikimedians expressed their interest to join the project and inability to work on medical articles, the team decided to expand the theme to social wellbeing too. As a part of the edit-a-thon, several offline events were also organised. Along with this, in this project an attempt has been made to train some interested women wikimedians of different communities for outreach activities by guiding them and making them organize the event in their respective communities. The basic training has been given about planning, proposing, performing and reporting. Which help in exploring and promoting women leadership in different languages, thus helping in bridging the gender gap along with the usual accomplishment of content creation.

Program

The aim was to work on creating content related to women wellbeing issues. Along with this, the event was an attempt to give hands-on training to interested women Wikimedians to explore their leadership potential and organise an event. The writing challenge ran from 00:01 1 October to 23:59 24 November 2018 (UTC+05:30). Any wikimedian from any language community was welcome to join by improving and/or translating articles related to women health. The participants signed up in the participants section on event page of their respective language. The wikimedians interested in organizing the offline activity other than the organizers involved in this project from the planning stage, were called coordinators.

Online Planning

A group of interested women wikimedians was created for online discussions and time to time updations and task management. The discussions started in the month of July 2018. Different language communities were contacted to join the program. A total of 11 languages participated, we had Netha Hussain from malayalam community in the team but we couldn't have Malayalam as participating language community because of the flood issues. In August, the representatives from every community were asked to fill a google form form and the budget was planned on the basis of their submissions. The draft message was created in English and translated to Indic Languages and the same message was floated in mailing list and was also posted on village pump of different participating languages. The list of articles was finalised after discussion with Diptanshu from WikiMed and Dr Rajender Prabhune from Marathi Wiki Community. Dr James Heilman also suggested us a lost of 107 articles.

Guidelines for articles

The article should be created or extended from 1 October 2018 to 0:00 and up to November 24, 2018 23:59 (IST).
Irrespective of the size of the existing article already, it must be expanded by additional 9000 bytes. The newly formed articles must be at least this size. (Excluding templates, information boxes, references, quotes etc.)
The article should be sufficiently supported by relevant references.
You should write the article in normal style. The text should be corrected. Machine translations will not be accepted.
Avoid major issues like plagiarism and copyright infringement in articles.
The article should at least have the basic information about the subject.
Write the articles given in the list only .
The coordinator should check the articles written by the participants.
The coordinators' decision is final if an article is accepted or rejected.
Update the article status on the event page.

Outcome

Number of events- 5-6 (1 in each participating language community)	14 events organized. Details can be checked here- [1]	Initially, the project was planned to be organized in 8 Indic languages, but later it was organized in 11 languages. Santali language was willing to work on the theme so two active wikimedians from the community joined in November. Because of the Hockey World Cup, the community was working on the tie-up with Government and creating articles for Hockey edit-a-thon. So, they couldn't focus on the WWWW Project. The project lead was also invited to Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University to talk about Wiki and the Project.
Number of participants- 10 in each community	A Total of 141 wikimedians participated in the online event.	Maximum participation was seen in Bengali (30) and Hindi (30) Communities and minimum participants was in Odia(05) Community because of the Hockey World Cup commitments. Santali(02), Tulu (06) and Maithili (06) joined us later after submitting the grant proposal.
Number of of articles created or improved- 35 per community		Santali, Odia, Tulu and Maithili because of delay in joining the program or because of limited participation couldn't achieve the target of 35 articles

Learning

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

What worked well?

We organized first event lead only by women wikimedians from India.
We also gave hands on training to conceptualising, planning, proposing, organizing and reporting an event.
We organised offline events at different places in collaboration with some organizations.
We also had mental health experts and doctors for awareness campaign either by lectures or videos.
We interacted with Doctors from some reputed Medical Institutions and had them in our team to review the article quality.
We went out with NGOs working for Women and Children Health and asked them the details they need. Worked on specific articles.
Many doctors approached us to provide relevant resource material required for articles.
Many male members helped us immensely in deciding the article list and in organizing offline events. Names may be shared if required.
We invited employees from different NGOs in India working on women's health, abortion, sexual and reproductive health and rights. This was helpful because the participants had a basic idea of women's health in India and were motivated to participate in the edit-a-thon.
We were lucky to have some doctors working with us, the edit-a-thons became more like awareness sessions.
We were approached by some highly reputed institutions for future collaborations.
We learned about various resources where resource material related to Medical articles is available under free license. e.g. Radiopedia.
The guidance by WikiMed helped us focus more on quality rather than quantity of articles. they even helped us in creating the list of important articles.
While editing on Medical articles in Indian languages, we realized the translation issues and submitted the proposal to counter the same during community survey. The proposal was accepted and will hopefully facilitate the editing process in future activities.
Most userviews' articles of authors changed and the health articles are the most viewed articles, which indicates the interest of readers.
We have a team of trained women wikimedians to propose and execute projects on their own. Some have been actively involved in various projects post this event.
We know the issues and have been able to plan one event for women to discuss issues and probable solutions Women TTT. Women are also collectively participating in UNESCO Wiki4Women edit-a-thon as resource persons/trainers.

What did not work so well?

We tried working with medical students, but in every institute who initially agreed to collaborate couldn't do this because of mid term exams of the students.
The medical terms and topics that were difficult to comprehend and participants were facing issues in writing about them.
Because of the sensitive subject, many wikimedians were not comfortable with the idea of working on the listed articles because of the complexity of the subject and limited understanding of the provided information.
The guidelines fixed for article quality were not easy to work on but we don't regret the decision because the article should at least cover the basics of a concern.
Some of the leads were new wikimedians and had relatively less knowledge of wiki and different projects. Also, they didn't know the fellow wikimedians from their community much which acted as a hindrance in planning an offline event.
People sometimes don't check the messages posted to their social media accounts, an attempt will be made to engage people in on-wiki discussions rather than forming any other group.
The clash of dates of event with Hockey edit-a-thon by Odia community affected the WWWW edit-a-thon.
It is sometimes difficult to keep individuals from different regions in loop and that's where they miss the pace with which other communities progress.
Timely record maintenance could have been better.
Delay in grant release affected the way things were planned.
Dashboard was faulty for some languages.

What would you do differently next time?

We'd definitely get at least some participants from a medical background so that they have the subject expertise and can focus on learning how to edit on Wikipedia more efficiently and can help other participants as well. It would have been great to have a doctor or a subject expertise on board to ease the participants.
Planning more ways to increase doctor's involvement.
Focus on donation of resource material.
Associating with allied organisations on a larger scale
Taking experienced wikimedians as lead from a language community
Decide action measures in case some other event clashes with the main event.
The exam schedule of the students can be considered before finalising the dates of the event.
Timely record maintenance
Better ways of progress analysis than dashboard.

Finances

The grant was requested to WMF and after due permission from the authorities, the unspent balance available with CIS-A2K Team was granted for this project. As all the transactions were in INR, the report is being submitted in INR.

Grant funds spent

The details of the expenses may be found in the above table. The usual expenses were on Travel, food (for meeting, outreach or offline activity) and Swag.

Remaining funds

The funds remaining from this grant in the amount of 12,323.24 INR were deducted from another grant payment for Grants:APG/Proposals/2019-2020 round 2/The Centre for Internet and Society/Proposal form.

As the grant was released late, some events were organized by individual support from CIS A2K and some were funded by the college wiki club. Yes we have balance amount of 12323.24 INR. The details of the same can be found in the given Table.
