This report for a Rapid Grant approved in FY 2020-21 has been reviewed and accepted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Goals

edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

The project was highly successful in terms of engaging new editors who have since demonstrated a deep and ongoing engagement with Wikipedia editing, particularly on Maltese-language Wikipedia. Although these editors chose to often work on articles that were not directly included in our planned list of articles to be edited, they nonetheless have been providing significant input throughout the past months. We are very happy with the depth of engagement that this project has succeeded in achieving with some of its participants.

Outcome

edit

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
20 total participants 30 The project proved to be particularly attractive to participants who wanted to experience the training sessions we offered for both new participants and those who had already received basic training through us previously.
10 new participants 10 We actually had 20+ new participants but about half of them came to the training sessions and didn't engage with the project/s after that.
400 articles created or improved 944 The expected outcome was greatly exceeded. A number of the new editors who participated in this project went beyond the list of articles that we had initially planned for this project, and created many new articles on subjects and topics that were of interest to them.

Learning

edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

We aimed to generate 400 new articles on the Maltese-language Wikipedia through this project. We managed too more than exceed the target by twice as many articles as we targeted. This is evident from the fact that the average number of new articles created per month on mt.wikipedia has now gone up significantly from the averages recorded in recent years, prior to this project.

  • What did not work so well?

We had aimed to generate 400 articles that are core type articles, which every encyclopedia should have. However, new editors were mostly interested in writing about other subjects. Still, we believe that some of the new editors will continue to work on the articles we originally selected for creation now that they've come to understand more the importance of having some basic articles in place to enable wikilinks from other articles they're also interested in creating/editing.

  • What would you do differently next time?

We need to organize better training for new editors and intermediate editors. The training sessions we organized where the most useful aspect of the project, according to feedback we received from the participants. We would therefore allocate more resources for training and less for tokens of appreciation to volunteers, even if these are still essential to show appreciation to volunteers who engage regularly and encourage others to engage more regularly.
