Project Goal

edit

What will be the outputs of your project and how will those outputs contribute to advancing a specific Movement Strategy Initiative

The research project will be contributing to Movement Strategy ongoing discussions on hubs (Regional) by sharing the views of communities in West Africa and providing a summary of how a hub should be. Three key questions will be answered at the end the research. These questions are:

  1. How do African volunteers within West Africa understand or perceive hubs?
  2. What challenges can the implementation of the hub in West Africa solve?
  3. What challenges can prevent the implementation of hubs in West Africa?

What specific Movement Strategy Initiative does your project focus on and why? Please select one of the initiatives described here
Initiative 25: Regional & thematic hubs

Project Background

edit
When do you intend to begin this project and when will it be completed?
The whole project will be conducted from 1st July - 31st October 2022. The research will be conducted for these four months.
Where will your project activities be happening?
The project activities will be focused on West Africa Region looking at communities and affiliates.
Are you collaborating with other communities or affiliates on this project? Please provide details of how partners intend to work together to achieve the project goal.
We will be collaborating with other affiliates and communities in the West Africa region on this project to be able to access their community members for our surveys and interviews.
What specific challenge will your project be aiming to solve? And what opportunities do you plan to take advantage of to solve the problem?
There are still ongoing discussions and ideas are being shared on Initiative 25 of the Movement Strategy. The implementation of initiative 25 needs different stakeholders to share their opinions on the implementation ideas we have so far. This will help in making the final implementation be a holistic representation of all different African regions.
Does this project aim to apply one of the examples shared in the call for grants and if so which one?

Project Activities

edit
What specific activities will be carried out during this project? Please describe the specific activities that will be carried out during this project.
The research project will be divided into 4 different phases. The methodology to be used for the research will be mixed methods. We will be using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods to arrive at findings and answers to our research questions. Using a mixed method will help us tackle a broader and a more complete range of research questions owing to the fact that we are not confined within the tenets of a particular method of research.
  • For our first phase we will be using questionnaires to gather the understanding and perception of Wikimedians on hubs. This phase will address key question 1; How do African volunteers within West Africa understand or perceive hubs? and 2; What challenges can the implementation of the hub in West Africa solve? This will help us efficiently get more responses from a larger sample size and will last a month (1st July, 2022 - 31st July 2022).
  • For the second phase, we will be using interviews to allow us ask a wider range of questions and get insights on hubs from an audience who can share perspectives on the topic. The last key question; What challenges can prevent the implementation of hubs in West Africa? will be addressed here. An example will be to interview members of the planning East Africa and Thematic Hubs team. These interviews will be conducted online using the Zoom platform. All interviews will be recorded and transcribed after the meeting ends. This will also last a month (1st August - 31st August 2022).
  • Phase three of the research will be used for analysis of our data collected during the online survey and online interview. The period is 1st September - 30th September 2022.
  • Finally, phase four will be the period to document and share our research findings with other communities, affiliates and stakeholders from 1st October - 31st October 2022.
How do you intend to keep communities updated on the progress and outcomes of the project? Please add the names or usernames of these individuals responsible for updating the community

Additional information

edit
If your activities include community discussions, what is your plan for ensuring that the conversations are productive? Provide a link to a Friendly Space Policy or UCoC that will be implemented to support these discussions.
In the case where the research project requires the research leads to have a call with several people or wikimedians, we intend to use the regular Friendly Space Policy that we have in our movement.
If your activities include in-person events or activities, you will need to complete the steps outlined in the Risk Assessment protocol. Please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool.
N/A
If your activities include the use of paid online tools, please describe what tools these are and how you intend to use them.
We will be using the Zoom Video Conferencing Tool.
Do your activities include the translation of materials, and if so, in what languages will the translation be done? Please include details of those responsible for making the translations.
Since the West African Region is made up of a combination of French and English speaking countries we will be employing the services of a translator to translate our online survey questions and responses and research findings we will be sharing with other affiliates and communities to French.
Are there any other details you would like to share? Consider providing rationale, research or community discussion outputs, and any other similar information, that will give more context on your proposed project.
Based on a similar research focused on the MENA region, wikimedians from other regions are encouraged to also embark on similar research works to broaden the spectrum of information on hubs in the movement.

Outcomes

edit

After your activities are complete, we would like to understand the draft implementation plan for your community. You will be required to prepare a document detailing this plan around a movement strategy initiative. This report can be prepared through Meta-wiki using the Share your results button on this page. The report can be prepared in your language, and is not required to be written in English.

In this report, you will be asked to:

  • Provide a link to the draft implementation plan document or Wikimedia page
  • Describe what activities supported the development of the plan
  • Describe how and where you have communicated your plan to relevant communities.
  • Report on how your funding was spent

Your draft implementation plan document should address the following questions clearly:

  • What movement strategy initiative or goal are you addressing?
  • What activities will you be doing to address that initiative?
  • What do you expect will happen as a result of your activities? How do those outcomes address the movement strategy initiative?
  • How will you measure or evaluate your activities? What tools or methods will you use to evaluate your activities?

To create a draft implementation plan, we recommend the use of a logic model, which will help you and your team think about goals, activities, outcomes, and other factors in an organized way. Please refer the following resources to develop a logic model:

Please confirm below that you will be able to prepare a draft implementation plan document by the end of your grant:

  • ...

Optionally, you are welcome to include other information you'd like to share around participation and representation in your activities. Please include any additional outcomes you would like to report on below:
