Goals

edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes. Our main goal was to engage new editors, In this, we think we have been successful while conducting Wikipedia Nashik Summit. We also added new skills to existing editors through workshops and managed to engage them. We are very happy as there is a great boost to our outreach activities, as many people joined us at the summit and later also attended workshops, many institutions like Kumbhathon, Nashik Municipal Corporation & IEI (Institution of Engineers, Nashik) supported our effort which shows their involvement with us. Nashik local press have also recognized the significance, with a range of high-impact coverage.

Outcome

edit

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
To conduct an Event- Wikipedia Nashik Summit. Event was successfully conducted with more than 150 Wikipedians and non Wikipedians attendees.
  1. Summit was attended by following Attendees : 2 Experienced Wikipedians- Mr. Shrinivas Hemade, Marathi Wikipedian and Mr. Abhishek Suryawanshi, Vice President of New York Wikimedia Chapter, 20 Wikipedians from nashik, 120 Non- Wikipedians, Supporters : Kumbhathon, Local administration- Nashik Municipal Corporation and Institutions of Engineers, India (IEI).
  2. The summit targeted creating awareness about Wikipedia and its sister projects- through sessions by Experienced Wikipedians. The session included - What is Wikipedia, encourage people to join the online community and contribute to an open and free platform of knowledge, brief about Wikimedia as an organization and a short interactive Q&A session was held where he addressed several questions from the audience.
  3. Mr. Shrinivas Hemade covered different aspects of Marathi Wikipedia. There's a community active on Marathi Wiki as well which contributes articles in Marathi, and Mr. Hemade has been is a part of that community and has been editing for the last 10 years. He encouraged the attendees to contribute towards this local language Wikipedia, as the number of active editors and articles is very small as compared to English Wiki.
  4. Engaging activity where attendees were divided into groups, each group was given a different logo of one of the Wikimedia projects. The task was to identify the project, write main points of the projects and then there was an ideation activity where the teams were asked to present their ideas
  5. Media Exposure: Press conference was conducted by the Wikimedia Nashik Community & IEI before the summit on 21st of June 2016 & articles were published on 22nd of June 2016 in TOI, Divya Marathi and Lokmat. Articles on the summit were published in various local newspapers.
Increase interest and engage new editors and collaboration/Support from different educational institutions of Nashik to engage more school students. We managed to seek participation from people in nashik, from different educational and professional backgrounds. Collaboration from Kumbhathon, IEI and NMC instead of Educational institution. Outreach activities, Summit and workshops helped us to increase interest and engage them to Wikipedia activities and edits. As mentioned, Instead of educational institutions, we managed to seek support and collaboration with local organizations like Kumbhathon, IEI and administration - Nashik Municipal Corporation who are having good hold on community in Nashik.
Increase skills for existing editors Helped to increase skills of existing editors Few Wikipedia Nashik community were been to Train-The-Trainer program, so they shared skills learnt at TTT program. Also, 4 of community members attended “Wiki Conference India 2016”. All the sessions attended and skills learnt were shared with Wikipedia Nashik Community thereafter. Add or improve content of the articles (Both English and Marathi) Workshop attendees were explained how to edit and asked them to improve or add content according to their interest We were not able to make people write/edit more as instead of editathon we focused on Workshop which included - Introduction to Wikipedia, Wikipedia Editing, Guidelines, uploading photos on Wikimedia Commons, explanation of Wikimedia Sister Projects, Awareness about Wikipedia mobile app.
Get a boost for Outreach activities in Nashik We successfully managed to spread awareness about Wikipedia and its activities. Through Summit, four workshops and media coverage, our outreach activities were boosted.
Number of events: 6 Spread over a period of 2 months Number of workshops conducted: 4 over a period of 2 months We initially thought of having 6 workshops. However, to organize 6 workshops in 2 months were bit difficult due to time and logistics constraints.
Awareness about Wikipedia and Sister projects among the people of Nashik Engaging activity during Summit, Session on Wikipedia and Sister projects during Workshops. As mentioned before, Engaging activity where attendees were divided into groups, each group was given a different logo of one of the Wikimedia projects. The task was to identify the project, write main points of the projects and then there was an ideation activity where the teams were asked to present their ideas. Also, in workshops we briefed about different sister projects and how they can contribute.
To bring together all Wikipedians in Nashik and engage Non-Wikipedians with the community. We achieved it through wikipedia Nashik Summit. Engaging Wikipedic community in nashik effectively was a great help in planning for the event, supporting the work and contributing what they know to increase involvement in non- wikipedians. Through Summit and workshops we managed to do that.

Learning

edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

-> Summit and workshops brought together wikipedians in Nashik. Awareness about Wikipedia and sister projects. Engaging activities for attendees. Support from local organizations Kumbhathon, IEI and Nashik Municipal corporation. Boost for Outreach activities in Nashik.

  • What did not work so well?

-> As workshop and Summit focused on Introducing Wikipedia, its activities, guidelines and its sister projects, we took session for making attendees understand how they can edit. Editathon for new editors was not conducted. We will do that in our future activities. We faced few issues in obtaining internet facilities. We realized that some mechanism should be adopted next time to keep new editors engaged in activities. Our target number of workshops were 6 but we were able to conduct 4 workshops.

  • What would you do differently next time?

-> We would like to organize Editathon instead of workshops to add and improve contents and articles. Next time we will try to organize Wikipedia activities in schools/colleges. Next time we would like to take workshops/editathons/activities to bridge the gender gap in Wikipedia.
