Overall, the Young Leaders of YWCA Greater Pittsburgh Editathon succeeded in improving the diversity of Wikipedia contributors and articles. The event was well-received by participants, and was even featured in local news coverage.

YWCA Greater Pittsburgh’s editathon succeeded in motivating participants, training new editors, and adding/improving Wikipedia content regarding women’s social impact. YWCA’s Young Leaders Board brought in Marita Garrett – a local elected official slated to be the first black woman mayor of Wilkinsburg – to speak with our editathon participants before getting started. Her presentation was a hit, motivating the audience to help improve the diversity of Wikipedia’s editors and articles. The editor training we offered to new editors was well-received and effectively prepared participants to make a worthwhile contribution to our effort. Additionally, Wikimedia Scholars from the University of Pittsburgh were on site to assist. Overall, we nearly met our goal for creating and improving articles related to women’s social impact despite unanticipated challenges. In particular, the venue we secured for the editathon event experienced network trouble that left the space without wireless internet access for all but one hour of our event. Some participants used their mobile devices as hot spots, but the internet problem hindered our ability to accommodate the number of participants we originally planned for. We selected our venue, in large part, due to its popularity, but in the future may use YWCA’s own building for similar events. This will ensure we have more control over operations.

Note: Our expense for space rental was refunded by the venue due to the internet problems we experienced.
