Project idea
editWhat is the problem you're trying to solve?
editWhat problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project.
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
One of the problems we are trying to solve is lack of files and references about history and other articles on mk.Wikipedia. Content gap is a big problem, also. GLAM institutions in Republic of Macedonia are the ones who have files and experts, but their employees are not familiar with editing articles or uploading files on commons.
What is your solution to this problem?
editFor the problem you identified in the previous section, briefly describe your how you would like to address this problem.
We recognize that there are many ways to solve a problem. We’d like to understand why you chose this particular solution, and why you think it is worth pursuing.
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
GLAM institutions in Republic of Macedonia are willing to cooperate at this moment, and the user group GLAM Macedonia has agreements to send Wikipedian in Residence with two different GLAM institutions: The State Archives in the Republic of Macedonia and City Library "Braka Miladinovci" in Skopje. By sending Wikipedian in Residence in those GLAM institution, respectively, we are trying to solve the problem named in the previous section.
- Note 1: The agreement with the Library is signed for three months, (April, May and June 2017) because we agreed with the officials in the Library: to see the first results before continue the collaboration. If the results fits our and their expectations, we are going to sign agreement for longer period.
- Note 2: The agreement with the Archives is signed for a whole year, 2017, but we are going to send WiR for period of 6 months, from April till the end of November, with the two summer months free.
Project goals
editWhat are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually.
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
The main goal of this activity: the two Wikipedian in Residence have to work with GLAM staff and serve as a liaison between the Archives and Library, and the Wikimedia community.
Project impact
editHow will you know if you have met your goals?
editFor each of your goals, we’d like you to answer the following questions:
- During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
- Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)
For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (i.e. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents).
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
- In the Archives: Continue with existing good collaboration on educating the GLAM employees about Wikimedia projects, help them to upload files on Commons, which are release for public domain, as well to create new articles or improve the existing ones, using the books and materials from the Archives, is one of the goals. WiR will be responsible for coordinating and organizing special events, such as edith-a-thons, Wikipedian tours, which will bring Wikipedians on-site to work with staff on content creation and improvement. To host a contest (the third DARM Challenge) is a very important goal, because the volunteers will have a chance to incorporate uploaded materials into articles and to created new articles as well.
- In the Library: Educating the GLAM employees on Wikimedia projects, educate them to add references into articles, and to create new articles or improve the existing ones, using the books and materials from the Library, is one of the goals. WiR will be responsible for coordinating and organizing special events, such as edit-a-thon, Wikipedian tours, which will bring Wikipedians on-site to work with staff on content creation and improvement.
Once the project is over, we will have measurement in numbers:
- In the Archives: at least two organized Wikipedian tours, two organized edit-a-thons, at least three employees who will be active on Wikipemia projects, and 500 files uploaded on commons.
- In the Library: at least one organized Wikipedian tours, one organized edit-a-thons, at least two employees who will be educated to edit Wikipedia, and 100 references added to the existing articles.
Do you have any goals around participation or content?
editAre any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? If so, we ask that you look through these three metrics, and include any that are relevant to your project. Please set a numeric target against the metrics, if applicable.
Yes, we plan to organize a DARM Challenge for the community members, which is good way to involve more WIkipedians who will use the files uploaded on commons. Also, we plan to organize several thematic edit-a-thons. We expect at least 20 participants in DARM Challenge, and at least 6 participants at each thematic edit-a-thons.
Project plan
editActivities
editTell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
The two Wikipedian in Residence are expected to go at the office in a dally base, which is essential for this kind of activity. WiR will work with the employees in the GLAM institution in order to select materials useful for Wikimedia projects; digitize the materials if necessary; upload files on commons; educate and help employees to edit Wikipedia; organize and hold edit-a-thons with employees and with Wikipedians, etc.
The two GLAM institutions, respectively, are expected to provide an office for WiR; to ensure access on internet; to release materials in public domain; to collaborate with Wikipedian in Residence on every day base.

- This project so far is proved to be very helpful. As editor in Bulgarian Wikipedia I use numerous images from the project to illustrate articles. From historical standpoint there is of course very interesting letters about IMRO and the foreign propagandas in Macedonia which is one of the best assets of this project.
