edit
  • Our group hosted a virtual workshop for how to incorporate Wikipedia editing into class curriculum. We had over 40 attendees at the virtual workshop across several countries. We documented a summary of the workshop on our WikiProject page for those who could not attend.
  • We advertised for our coordinator position across our aquatic science networks via Twitter and listservs.
    • We received 17 applications for the coordinator position and narrowed down the applications to the top 4 candidates to interview
  • We recruited more educators to our program and encouraged them to create a WikiEdu dashboard as this year requires a review of applications before a course is accepted.
    • 8 educators are committed to be a part of our pilot program in Fall 2020 semester (N. Hemisphere), and 3-4 educators are committed for Spring 2021. We plan on recruiting more educators over the next few months for the upcoming Spring 2021 semester.
  • We connected with one of the main contributors to WikiProject Lakes and are discussing ways to collaborate across the two WikiProjects, especially for educators who want to improve pages related to lakes.

edit
  • We hired Dr. Jolie Gareis as the coordinator for our pilot program. Jolie has a strong background in aquatic sciences, science communication, and project management from previous experience at Aurora College and the Western Arctic Research Centre.
  • Jolie organized material for educators incorporating Wikipedia editing in the classroom for Fall (N. Hemisphere) 2020 semester.
  • Jolie coordinated with educators to schedule a time to meet and ask questions related to how Wikipedia editing is going in their classroom and what support the educators need from WP L&O.
  • We discussed the role of reviewers in the project and when would be the best time for bringing reviewers to check student-generated content.

September, 2020

edit
  • Jolie organized a virtual meeting with the educators and gave a brief overview of the project grant. Educators introduced themselves, what type of class they are teaching, their goals for the semester, and expressed any concerns that they had with Wikipedia editing in the classroom.
    • Pointed educators to various resources
    • Discussed with educators the appropriate role for reviewers in their course
    • Discussed how to select articles from WP L&O to edit
    • Discussed the appropriate level of interaction among educators and Jolie. Tentatively scheduled next meeting for October, 2020.
  • Jolie started a Slack channel for a place where educators and grant PI's can collaborate and ask questions.
