Programs

edit

Please describe any changes to your programs for the upcoming funding period, including the addition of new programs or any programs you are no longer doing. Include your rationale for any major changes to your programs here.

The main projects for 2018 are similar to those proposed for last year's grant: the Bridges across Cultures contest, the focus on the Education Program and the edit-a-thons hosted with different cultural organizations. The main changes to our approach for 2018 are the following:

  • We expect to capitalize from the investment done in 2017 working in some projects: the Wikipuentes program should be ready for its first group of participants since April-May, most of the materials for outreach should be available at the start of the Wikipedia in the University activities.
  • For the first time, Wikimedia Chile is expected to participate in the Wiki Loves Earth contest, following successful experiences with Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 and 2013, and Wiki Science 2017.
  • Continuing our restructuring process, the chapter is expected to work with its member to decide a strategy for the following years. We also expect to start to professionalize the chapter, including their accounting process and hiring its first contractors/staff members in supporting roles.

Please use the templates provided to add information about each program you are planning for the upcoming funding period.

Education Programs

Workshop with students at the Metropolitan Technological University (UTEM).

Within the objectives defined for 2018 is to further deepen the activities developed by the chapter in our Education Programs, especially in regard to activities previously tested such as Wikipedia in the University and Wikipuentes. The main goal of these projects is to attract students and teachers respectively.

Wikipuentes

To address primary and secondary education, Wikimedia Chile will launch a local version of the successful Wikipuentes program, created by Wikimedia Argentina. This Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is intended for primary and secondary education teachers to have have the knowledge and skills to use Wikipedia as a pedagogical tool in their classrooms. The teachers will have distance-learning sessions about free culture, wiki editing, and examples of Wikipedia education programs.

After adapting the Argentinian model to the Chilean context and running a trial program in February/March 2018, we plan to launch the first version of Wikipuentes in April 2018, when the activity can have a mayor impact due the traditional academic calendar of Chile, which extends from March to November/December.

  • Goals
    1. Launch the Wikipuentes platform
    2. Make a diffusion campaign in two periods (April and August)
    3. Have ≥15 teachers registered to participate during the year

Wikipedia in the University

During 2018 we will develop the Wikipedia in the University for the 7th consecutive year. This project uses Wikipedia as a learning, training, and evaluation method in different university courses. It is composed by two kinds of activities; one of them is the running of the Wikipedia Educational Program in university courses, where new articles are created and developed by students, as part of the curriculum determined by the teacher. This activity is usually supported by Wikimedia Chile volunteers, both in-person and on-wiki.

The second kind of activities included in Wikipedia in the University are related to outreach. These includes Wikipedia workshops, edit-a-thons, and #1lib1ref. This last one will be implemented during May (coinciding with the 17th anniversary of Spanish Wikipedia), along with other Spanish-speaking chapters.

  • Goals
    1. Make 6 Wikipedia in the University activities in different institutions.
    2. At least 3 of these activities will be related to the Wikipedia Education Program.
    3. Reach 120 students participating in the activities.
    4. Reach 80 new/vastly improved articles by the end of the term.
    5. Reach 30 participants in #1lib1ref activity.

Outreach

The following projects have the common goal to reach new people to our movement, both cultural institutions and individual contributors (editors, photographers, etc.). This program is also aimed to increse diversity to the Wikimedia movement.

Outreach mass activities

2017 Female Artists edit-a-thon.

Wikimedia Chile will carry out at least four massive edit-a-thons during 2018, organized along with Chilean cultural institutions. We plan to to have the first local version of Wiki Human Rights in June. This project, which aims for the dissemination of human rights, was initiated by Wikimedia Argentina as WikiLesa and this year will be escaled internationally, being expanded to other Iberocoop chapters, besides Chile, such as Mexico, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Likewise, we are in conversations with the Nodo Prácticas Artísticas y Feminismos Críticos (group of women researchers of the National Museum of Fine Arts) to make the second version of the Female Artists edit-a-thon on September, after the first successful experience of the last year. Also, collaborations with other institutions are projected, such as the University of Chile, the Metropolitan Technological University, and the Society of Writers of Chile, among others.

  • Goals
    1. Make 5 outreach mass activities (as workshops or edit-a-thons).
    2. Reach at least 150 participants in those mass activities.
    3. Reach at least 100 new/vastly improved articles as a product of those activities.

Wiki Loves Earth

In 2018, Wikimedia Chile will join for the first time the Wiki Loves Earth (WLE) photo contest, held since 2013 in various countries around the world. WLE aims to obtain quality images about the local natural heritage, especially the protected areas of each country. In Chile there are several categories of protected wild areas, including terrestrial and coastal/marine ecosystems. In the last months, Chile increased the areas protected by the government, announcing the creation of the 5 new national parks and creating one of the largest marine reservations in the world.[1]

These decisions not only have an ecological impact but also have interest in tourism. Chile has been designated by Lonely Planet as the world tourist destination in 2018,[2] which will attract many tourists, of which 14.5% consult the different versions of Wikipedia to know the places they will visit in Chile, according to figures of the Government of Chile (2016).[3] That is why it is important to have updated and quality images of the protected areas of our country, which we will achieve through WLE.

We also want to take advantage of the realization of WLE in Chile to generate parallel photography activities, such as wikisafaris in some protected areas, fostering volunteer participation.

  • Goals
    1. Launch of the Wiki Loves Earth contest in the months of May-June.
    2. Get the support of at least two local tourism or photography institutions.
    3. Have 500 valid photographs for the contest.
    4. Have 100 different participants.
    5. Have 40 new users participating in the contest.

Wikimedia Strategy Meeting 2030 with Chilean members and institutional partners.

1st Jornadas de Wikimedia Chile

Wikimedia Chile traditionally holds its Annual General Assembly during April each year. For 2018, we want to take advantage of this activity to hold a small conference with talks and workshops aimed at our partners as well as other collaborators (experts and partners) of Wikimedia in Chile. This opportunity will allow us both to disseminate our projects, in order to create new alliances with cultural institutions, and also train volunteers, which will help us to extend our capacity for action at the territorial level (see Decentralization in our Working Plan).

  • Goals
    1. Organize a Jornadas de Wikimedia Chile meeting in the month of April.
    2. Have 25 participants, including partners and assistants.
    3. Bring 4 members living outside of Santiago.

Content creation

The main goal of this program is to increase the local contents in the Wikimedia projects, not only in the Spanish Wikipedia, but in other Wikipedias (MENA's regional languages) or other formats (as images).

Bridges across Cultures

After a successful first edition in 2017, Wikimedia Chile will lead in 2018 a new version of this editing contest, whose objective is to promote cultural exchange between Latin America and the region of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), fostering South-South cooperation within our movement. We also hope to take advantage of the contest to carry out activities together with different local institutions linked to the Arab world, such as the Palestinian community, which is the largest in the world outside the Middle East.

  • Goals
    1. Participation of 5 countries in Latin America and 5 countries in the MENA region.
    2. Participation of 100 contestants with at least one article valid in the contest, at least 40 from Latin America and 40 from the MENA region.
    3. Creation of 750 articles, at least 300 in Latin America and 300 in the MENA region.

Sports and other events coverage

It is expected to cover several sporting and other cultural/social events, with the aim of obtaining high quality images and better illustrate Chile-related articles with photographs published under a free license. We expect to get partnerships and/or press accreditations with local institutions which allow our volunteers to access high-interest events as music festivals, sports championships, award ceremonies, among others.

  • Goals
    1. Obtain press credentials to photograph at least 3 high-interest events.
    2. At least 350 photographs of high-interest events uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
    3. 30 of these photographs should be highlighted as quality images in Wikimedia Commons.

Staff and contractors

edit

Please describe any changes to your staffing plan for the upcoming funding period. These should include increases in staff or contractor hours, new staff positions, or staff positions you are removing. Include your rationale for any staffing changes here.

For the first time in almost seven years, Wikimedia Chile is proposing the incorporation of paid positions within the organization, to support the work done by the Board and the volunteers. In line with the work plan published in July 2017, we expect our chapter to have, by the end of the year, a professional that can help us to perform administrative and logistic work, follow up the implementation of projects and strategies, evaluate the results of this grant and support the design for next year’s grant.
However, considering the past situation of our chapter, we have decided to take a cautious approach that can be satisfying for both the movement and our organization. First, we expect to have a contractor at the beginning of the grant (March-April) that can help with the promotion of Wikipuentes with teachers. After the results of this first experience with a (temporal) paid position, and the evaluation of the midpoint report, we expect to formally hire a Coordinator. This position should exist for the last 3 months of the year, although it should be renewed as a permanent position in case next year’s grant is approved and there is a good evaluation of the hired member by the Board.

For each new staff or contractor position, please use the template provided to add information about each new staff or contractor you are planning for the upcoming funding period (or to describe significant increases in hours or changes in job descriptions for existing staff). You are not required to provide this information for existing staff where no changes are required.

Contractor for Wikipuentes

  1. Please link to a detailed job description, which shows how this staff person will help your organization achieve its goals.
This person should be in charge of the promotion of the Wikipuentes program with teachers from primary and secondary schools in Chile. This promotion should include contact through social networks with groups of teachers and direct contact (by phone or mail) with potential interested.
The contractor should not only contact the teachers but also follow and motivate them, making sure they are able to participate in the MOOC (if they are interested). This way, we expect to reach the goal of participants for this project, outsourcing the initial contact with the teachers to someone with experience in that field, while the WM-CL volunteers can focus on the development and support of the MOOC.
  2. How long is this staff person or contractor's planned engagement with your organization, and how many hours will they work over the course of this grant?
This should be a part-time position for a month (March-April, depending on the final schedule). In case this contractor has a good evaluation, the position could be renewed for the second semester (July-August), with the same conditions as in the first one.
  3. Use a percentage of that person's total hours to show how they will spend their time on different programs and activities.
70% contact with teachers, 20% planification, 10% reporting.

General Coordinator

  1. Please link to a detailed job description, which shows how this staff person will help your organization achieve its goals.
The position of General Coordinator should be responsible of all the operational activities in the organization, working closely with the Board to implement its decision, policies and strategies. In particular, the General Coordinator should be in charge of:
  • Administration of the regular procedures for the maintenance of the chapter (for example, bank, accounting, office support, etc.)
  • Implementation of the activities scheduled by the chapter, being its operational representative for all administrative and logistic activities with other institutions and external suppliers.
  • Writing the 2019 grant, taking into account the decisions made by the Board, the Strategic Plan approved by the members and the recommendations made by the WMF and its associated organisms (like committees).
  • Evaluation of the activities made by the chapter and reporting of those activities for different stakeholders (Board, chapter members, WMF, etc.)
  • Working with other Iberocoop members to implement the decisions taken collectively.
  1. How long is this staff person or contractor's planned engagement with your organization, and how many hours will they work over the course of this grant?
This should be a part-time position (0.5 FTE) for three months (October to December, 2018), subject to renewal in a full-time position in case there is a good evaluation and 2019 grant is approved.
  2. Use a percentage of that person's total hours to show how they will spend their time on different programs and activities.
30% administration and logistics of current projects, 30% planification for 2019 grant, 30% evalution and reporting, 10% support of Iberocoop activites with other chapters.

Education Programs

Participants at the #1lib1ref workshop.

As one of the most important programs for our chapter, Wikimedia Chile has continued its work with educational institutions, especially unversities and other higher education institutions.

Wikimedia Chile worked in 2017 on the creation of Wikipuentes, a MOOC based on the experience of Wikimedia Argentina. After adaptation and trial, WMCL launched publicly Wikipuentes in April 2017. For this, we hired Vania (our first staff member) to do some promotion and follow up of the project. 8 teachers, mainly from secondary schools, joined the project. However, the experience showed that there has to be more support for the participants while doing the course so they can finish it. That is why for the second semester class, we will continue with Vania but more focused on the support part than the promotion of the course.

The chapter continued with the "Wikipedia en la universidad" project. This semester, WMCL participated with two university classes: "Anthropology of Southeast Asia" (Pontifical Catholic University of Chile) and "Interactive Communication" (Alberto Hurtado University), both in Santiago. Also, we had some workshops and editathons with the Institute of Communications and Image (ICEI) of the University of Chile and INACAP Maipú.

Participants at the WikiGap editathon.

Wikimedia Chile joined the Wiki Loves Earth contest for the very first time. For the contest, Wikimedia Chile had the support ot two important public entities in the country: the Tourism National Service (Sernatur) and the National Forest Corporation (Conaf), institutions in charge of the promotion of tourism and the administration of national parks and reserves, respectively. 1,067 images were uploaded for the contest by 168 photographers; most of them (91%) made their first contribution through this activity.

Three editathons have been organized to support the promotion of Wikipedia and increase its content. We organized a workshop and editathon with the new Aysén Regional Museum in Coyhaique and we signed an agreement to continue collaboration with the museum in the future. This way we are supporting decentralization of the activities of the chapter (going to the less populated and second southernmost region of the country) and increase the local contents available on the Wikimedia projects. We also had a WikiGap editathon hosted in the La Moneda Palace Cultural Center with the support of the Embassy of Sweden in Chile. 22 articles were created in this activity to reduce the gender gap in content on Spanish and Swedish Wikipedias.

Finally, in May 3th, we had a workshop and editathon at the Museum of Memory and Human Rights in line with the "Wiki Derechos Humanos" project realized by Wikimedia Argentina and Amnesty International. The activity didn't have only a great outcome on terms of content on Wikipedia (21 new and 16 improved articles); also it was a catalyst for a larger agreement with the Museum that was signed a few months later with the participation of Katherine Maher, WMF executive director.[1]

On the internal side, we had the 1st Jornadas de Wikimedia Chile, a meeting for Chilean wikimedians and other regular participants in our activities. It was an opportunity to present the activities that the chapter has done in the last years and increase the engagement of the Wikimedia local community in our activities. More than 20 Wikimedians joined the event (some of them from other cities like Concepción and Coyhaique) and we had the participation of Anna Torres (Wikimedia Argentina ED), Jorge Vargas (WMF representative for Latin America) and Diego Sáez Trumper (WMF researcher).

Education Programs

Participants at the #1lib1ref workshop.

A volunteer helping a student at the Editathon of Chilean Writers.

Wikimedia Chile continued and deepened its work with educational institutions, especially universities and other higher education institutions, during 2018.

Wikimedia Chile implemented Wikipuentes, a MOOC based on the experience of Wikimedia Argentina that was designed in 2017. After adaptation and trial, WMCL launched the project in April 2018 and a second round was released on September 2018. In total, ten teachers, mainly from secondary schools, joined the project. However, the experience showed that there has to be more support for the participants while doing the course so they can finish it and the project must be linked to tangible impact in their work environment (for example, certifictions). This will be considered by the new Education Manager to be hired in 2019.

The chapter continued the "Wikipedia en la universidad" project. WMCL participated in two university classes during the first semester: "Anthropology of Southeast Asia" (Pontifical Catholic University of Chile) and "Interactive Communication" (Alberto Hurtado University), both in Santiago. We also had some workshops and editathons with the Institute of Communications and Image (ICEI) of the University of Chile and INACAP Maipú. During the second semester, WMCL worked with the Metropolitan University of Technology and the Writers Society to create and improve content related with Chilean literature, and then with the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the Universidad de Chile, trying to promote the creation of articles about female Chilean architects biographies in Wikipedia. In this last activity we also joined forces with "Mujer Arquitecta" (Women in Architecture), a local initiative that works to highlight female presence and contribution in this field. Wikimedia Chile also organized the first Wikipedia en la Universidad activity in Concepción (second largest city in Chile), working with the Universidad del Desarrollo. Other activities included a presentation in the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (PUCV) and the conference made by Katherine Maher in the University of Chile's ICEI on August 2018.

In all of these activities we not only achieved the creation of more and better content for the Wikimedia projects, but we managed to establish alliances with more than 120 students and several professors and educational institutions, which we hope will continue to grow during next year.

Finally, we also participated in the diffusion of the Spanish version of the edition contest "1lib1ref", organized by Iberocoop. In this activity we had more than 20 participants and a total of 55 editions.

Several editathons were organized to support the promotion of Wikipedia and increase its content during this last year. We organized the southernmost workshop and editathon in the new Aysén Regional Museum in Coyhaique and we signed an agreement to continue collaborating with the museum in the future. This way we are supporting decentralization of the activities of the chapter (going to the less populated and second southernmost region of the country) and increasing local contents and perspectives available on the Wikimedia projects.

We also had the WikiGap editathon hosted in the La Moneda Palace Cultural Center with the support of the Embassy of Sweden in Chile. We created 22 articles in order to improve women presence in the Spanish and Swedish Wikipedia, reduce gender gaps in this platform, and promote cultural and content exchange and collaboration between Chile and Sweden.

On May 3rd, we had a workshop and editathon at the Museum of Memory and Human Rights as a part of the "Wiki Derechos Humanos" project that is coordinated by Wikimedia Argentina. The activity, in which we also collaborated with Amnesty International, did not only had a great outcome on terms of content (21 new and 16 improved articles in Wikipedia); it also was a catalyst for a larger agreement with the Museum that was signed a few months later during Katherine Maher, WMF executive director, visit en August.[3]

Continuing our efforts to decentralize activities, we visited the Coquimbo Region to host the first workshop and editathon in the Gabriela Mistral Regional Library, as a way to promote local perspective and the creation of articles related with the regional history. During this activity we also launched the "Mes de Mistral", a 30 days contest dedicated to the Nobel Prize winner Gabriela Mistral, who was born in this region, which had the objective of highlighting her legacy and its presence in Wikipedia.

Finally, in November, we participated in the second version of "Editafem: Women in visual arts", an editathon organized by the National Museum of Fine Arts, the Ministry of Culture, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. In this activity, WMCL was on charge of training 40 new female editors -mostly with arts and gender studies backgrounds- in the use of Wikipedia, in order to create and improve 40 female Chilean artists' biographies. Editafem was also organized in other two cities at the same time: Concepción and Valdivia; there, we as WMCL had a role in the preparation and training of those editors.

Content creation

Some of the quality images uploaded with the support of Wikimedia Chile.

Wikimedia Chile organized the second edition of Bridges across Cultures, the editing contest about Latin American, Middle Eastern and Northern Africa culture. The contest was held between December 5th, 2018 and January 20th, 2019. In total, 948 articles were created; even though there was an increase in the number of articles created, the number of participants was reduced compared with the previous edition, especially in the MENA edition. On the other hand, the contest tried to increase the quality of the articles created and improved, announcing a "quality prize" for the best article created. In the Latin American projects, the winner was "Alfombra turca" regarding Turkish carpets.

Wikimedia Chile has supported the incorporation of new content to Wikimedia Commons. During this year, we obtained press cards to assist and photograph all the matches of the Primera División, the most important football league in the country. As such, we uploaded 381 photos from 12 matches played by 15 different teams (missing just one from the total participants).

Also, we had participate in several cultural and entertainment activities, such as Billboard Latin Music Showcase and its gala, that included the participation of various Latin American artists, like Gente de Zona and Juan Magán. We participated in some events related to TV shows like the Copihue de Oro Awards, the Telethon inauguration night and the official announcement of the 2019 Viña del Mar International Song Festival artists.

Of the 354 images uploaded by Wikimedia Chile, 28 have been promoted as "Quality images" in Wikimedia Commons. 335 diferent files are in usage, and in February 2019, they had a total of 1,046,380 pageviews.
