Wikimedia Spain is a Spanish non-profit organization, recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation as Wikimedia chapter in Spain. It was officially approved by the Wikimedia Foundation on February 7, 2011 and the same month was registered in the National Registry of Associations of the Ministry of Interior. In May 2011 an agreement was signed with the Valladolid City Council through which the association's headquarters would be located in a municipal agency.

2015 was a key year; in addition to attending the Princess of Asturias Awards Ceremony, where Wikipedia got the International Cooperation award, and which had an important impact on Spanish society, the activities and projects we carried out increased substantially. Due to this, we applied for the first time for a simple annual grant for 2016; it included the hiring of our first employee, a Programme Coordinator. Thanks to this, it was possible to manage the growing demand for activities and projects throughout the country, achieving good results in the number of activities, improved articles, obtained images or volunteers involved.

At that time we detected that our activities, achievements and everything related to Wikipedia were not well known, so we requested a second employee in the simple annual grant for 2017, a Communications Manager. Since then, internal and external communication has improved a lot, reaching more people, better managing our communication with the press and involving volunteers in the different activities and projects.

However, this important growth required planning to carry out a more effective management of the chapter's activity. For that reason, at the end of 2017 we started an internal process to define our strategy for the period 2019-2021. The first step took place in the conference that Wikimedia Spain held in Murcia in mid-September. There, the members attending worked on a SWOT analysis to define the situation of the chapter. Then an online survey was sent to all members to collect information about the situation of WMES.

In January 2018 we held a meeting in Torreandaluz (Soria), during a weekend, involving the staff, members of the board and members, to process all the information obtained from the SWOT and the survey and discuss the next steps. Once everything was documented, in August 2018 we held a meeting of board members and staff in Madrid in which we discussed the last aspects to be addressed before writing the final document. Finally, the strategy document was approved by the board members in October 2018.

Diversity

Description

In the same way that we have been working in last years, we consider that the sum of human knowledge will not be complete if it does not involve all types of communities, both in terms of content and participation. This means that, for example, we need more content on women, on the rural areas or on spaces outside Europe, such as Africa or Asia. This problem can be extrapolated to the linguistic context, where we find several very small communities in Spain that work with Wikimedia projects in minority languages but there are shortage of content or participation. At the level of participation, the predominance of the same profile affects directly this diversity of content and the diversity in the community which, if it did not exist, would mean leaving part of the population out. Therefore, after discussing it in our strategy process and in the last WMES Conference, and taking into account the people who collaborate in the Wikimedia projects and the content of the Wikipedia articles, we consider women, emigrants, minority languages, elderly people and the rural world as under-represented communities.

Our aim for 2019 is, therefore, to continue the work of recent years and emphasize our work with those communities with which we have not previously worked. Thus we will continue organizing activities, both face-to-face and online, to reduce the gender gap. The good results of 2018 (51,85 % of the events were focused on it) and previous years encourage us to continue working to increase content and attract more women editors, with the collaboration of institutions, organizations and other Wikimedia groups. March 8th Women's Day (focusing on #WikiGap and Art+Feminism), #DíaDeLasEscritoras or Women and Young Girls in Science Day are some of the campaigns to participate in.

In the rural environment our plan is to continue organizing activities to improve and make visible the contents on this subject. Previously we have focused mainly on multimedia content, through, for example, Wiki Takes activities involving volunteers from different regions of Spain, but the aim for 2019 is also to involve the rural population, either directly or through associations or institutions. The different language communities, especially the smaller ones, are another focus of interest. In addition to carrying out activities, such as the Intercultur initiative, in which 10 languages of the Iberian Peninsula have participated since last year, we want to continue promoting participation in Wikimedia projects in those smaller communities. Last year we started this task with Extremaduran Wikipedia and in addition to strengthening that work we want to involve another community.

At community level, to achieve greater diversity and representation of other social groups, both in Wikimedia Spain and in Wikipedia and sister projects, our purpose is to work with older people or razialiced communities, for example, with whom we intend to carry out training activities and participation in Wikimedia.

Media content

Description

Consolidated as one of our main programs, the goal is to involve photographer and creative communities in Spain, in order to increase the number of editors and the quantity and quality of files in Wikimedia Commons and help spread this content in other Wikimedia projects. Activities under this program include organizing Wiki Loves photographic contests (Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Earth and Wiki Loves Folk) and local photographic events such as Wiki Takes (also linked to the diversity programme), supporting events coverage (sports, music, cultural) in order to achieve quality images of, for example, prominent personalities in these fields, and photo documentation projects such as "Ningún municipio español sin fotografía". All these activities involve WMES members and other volunteers.

In 2018, the participants in the activities of this program took 16 074 (October 31th) pictures, with 6132 uses and 1766 (10,99 %) distinct images used until now. In 2019, our goal will be obtain 25 000 new uploaded files, 15 % of them used in Wikimedia projects (instead of 10% in 2018). Also, getting new editors is important because they maintain or increase the level of activity of the project, benefiting the contents, and because, as we have seen in the past, helps to increase the community of Wikimedia Spain, to which members have come thanks to our photography initiatives. Finally, in the context of working for diversity in Wikimedia projects, another important goal will be to diversify the kind of multimedia content, so far focused on images. In 2018 we organized a first activity in which audio files were uploaded to Commons, in Wiktionary editathon, so either through such events or participation in initiatives such as Lingua Libre, our intention is also to work on those type of contents (audio and video files).

GLAM

Description

Since we started a project of Wikipedian in Residence in three state museums (National Archaeological Museum, Museum of Romanticism and Costume Museum) in 2015, when we signed an agreement with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, our efforts to involve cultural institutions in the Wikimedia projects and make them aware of the importance of free licenses are continuous. The agreement was renewed in 2017, when other museum added to collaborate with us (González Martí National Museum of Ceramics and Decorative Arts of Valencia), and in 2018, when Sorolla Museum started to organize some Wikimedia-related activities. Also, the Prado Museum showed interest and we had a series of meetings to talk about collaborating in the near future, which would involve signing a new agreement as its management is independent outside the network of state museums.

Therefore, a part of this GLAM program is focused on continuing to work with these museums through the organization of workshops or the uploading of archives of their collections to Wikimedia Commons under free license. In the context of the releasement of contents, in 2018 we began to upload part of the thousands of files available from the National Geographic Institute and our purpose for this year is to continue this task, with the incentive of managing this process within the framework of the new Structured Data development in Commons.

On the other hand, the training and participation of the staff of GLAM institutions is key as they have access to quality content and a traditional commitment to the dissemination of knowledge. Therefore we propose the organization of training sessions in which they know the Wikimedia ecosystem and how they can collaborate by themselves. An important aspect of this task is the work with libraries or museums, with whom we will work, being able to link also with the diversity program if their context is rural.

Education

Description

Wikipedia is key to education, and education is key to expand the use and to improve the quality of Wikipedia. The interest of educational institutions, teachers and in general the educational community for Wikimedia projects, especially Wikipedia, has been increasing every year. Our collaboration with educational institutions date back to 2012. Since then, each year the quantity of institutions we collaborate with has increased; 2 more in 2013, 2 in 2014, 2 in 2015, 5 in 2016 and 7 in 2017, to a total of 19. These collaborations are translated into very diverse projects, covering different degrees or subjects such as e-learning, medicine, communication, physics, art history or aerospace engineering, to name a few examples. These include translation projects, which are already organised in three different universities.

These collaborations are not only under the educational project model but also as specific actions, such as editathons. The reasons for continuing and supporting these collaborations, according to the professors themselves, are the good results obtained and the involvement, satisfaction and motivation of the students. The use of Wikipedia is generalized but there are still many professors and students who are unaware of how it works. Therefore, in addition to continuing this work, supporting the different forms of collaboration (content translation, writing articles), it is important to emphasize professor training so that they are aware of what it means to work with Wikipedia, how it is managed and its policies. This knowledge will allow these projects are managed autonomously because, due to the growing number of them, there are not enough volunteers to solve the requests for help. Along with these larger collaborations, other educational or training institutions ask us for a talk or a workshop or small sessions that in previous occasions have been the beginning of such projects.

Grantee metrics

The two grantee metrics for 2019 are Files used and Number of editathons and workshops. We consider that one of our most consolidated programs is multimedia content. Every year we obtain thousands of files for Wikimedia Commons and, although they are available for society, our work would be meaningless if we did not work so that these files are also used in the different Wikimedia projects. For this reason, every year we plan to use a minimum percentage of the files we obtain. On the other hand, one of our purposes is the promotion of free knowledge; face-to-face events are an important tool for this as they allow us to explain, support and involve people or institutions in Wikimedia projects. For this reason, we consider it interesting to organize a minimum of events (editathons and workshops) through which to carry out this work of engagement and dissemination, in addition to generating content.

Diversity

In the context of increasing diversity in Wikimedia projects, we set three objectives for 2019: to increase the participation of underrepresented communities, the participation of women, and to reduce knowledge gaps. These first six months we have organized six events as part of this program, two of them focused on women, one on linguistic diversity and three more on content diversity.

The events focused on women have been organized in Madrid around two campaigns: the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 22) and the International Women's Day (March 8). The first was an editathon at the Official School of Doctors and Graduates in Philosophy and Letters, in collaboration with its archaeology section, where articles about women archaeologists were edited.

The second one was at the Swedish embassy in Madrid. For the second consecutive year, we participated in the global campaign WikiGap through an editathon about scientific women and, in addition, one presentation about the situation of women in science by the journalist Teresa Guerrero. Regarding the involvement of elderly people, linked within the education program, we collaborate with two elderly education centres in Soria and Borriol. In both we have carried out training sessions and monitoring their learning in the Wikipedia edition.

In order to reduce content gaps, we organized three events, two online and one face-to-face. One of the two online initiatives is the PESCAR contest, which we already organised last year; this time the content focuses on underrepresented geographical areas of Oceania, Asia and Africa and will run throughout the year. The other initiative was in January, when we celebrated the Antarctica Month, which focused on expanding content on this topic and improving its visibility.

Regarding the face-to-face event, in January we organized, in collaboration with Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso Transeuropa, an editathon as part of the Wiki4MediaFreedom initiative, which aims to systematise, expand, and update Wikipedia entries on freedom of information and threatened journalism in Europe.

Finally, regarding to the work for linguistic diversity, in February we organised the Intercultur online initiative, which aims to create content in the different languages of the Iberian Peninsula. As last year, it was proposed to work in 10 different languages and the selection of contents was made thanks to the Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory tool, developed by Marc Miquel. Also, in our effort to work with more local Wikipedia communities, in March we had a meeting in Zaragoza with several volunteers from the Aragonese Wikipedia and we talked about the possibility of collaborating together as well as the promotion of activities or initiatives related to the Aragonese language.

Media content

In these months we have carried out four different types of initiatives with the aim of increasing the content and number of editors in Wikimedia Commons. Firstly, the coverage of events included 10 events, including sports such as Slalom, Padel, Ciclocross or wheelchair basketball and, for the third consecutive year, the Goya Awards, the main film event in Spain, and whose material from 2017 and 2018 is 70% and 71% respectively used in the Wikimedia projects.

Secondly, we organized a wiki takes, in this case focused on the province of Burgos and, as in previous years, in the context of the project No Spanish municipality without a photo. For three days, 12 people, four of whom had never participated in events of this type, travelled around the province following four pre-designed routes and obtained, so far, almost 2,000 photographs belonging to more than 50 municipalities.

As of June 30th, there are only 300 municipalities left to complete the project, so it is progressing positively, with a regular group of volunteers involved in its development, and planning more activities in the coming months. Due to the fact that its completion is nearer, we began to think of a second phase of the project in which we resolve the false positives that we find, that is those municipalities that have an image in Commons but are not representative of the place. Thirdly, photography contests. In these first months we organize Wiki Loves Earth in May. This year we agreed to organize it jointly with Wikimedia Portugal, as in 2015, and we shared the organization, diffusion and evaluation of the competition. A total of 4015 images were obtained and 330 people participated, 271 of which were new. On the other hand, and as part of the Wiki Loves Folk campaign, which we organised in November, the Valencian Museum of Ethnology, in collaboration with Amical Wikimedia, promoted the Wiki Loves Falles campaign, focusing on the Fallas of Valencia.

In addition to these initiatives, we organized our awards ceremony for the 2018 photo contests. It was held on January 12 in Medialab-Prado, Madrid, and apart from the awards, there were several short talks about the Wiki Loves contests, the Wikimedia Lab, the Axiom Beta (free hardware and software for audiovisual production) and the Wikipedia's 18th birthday and Wikimedia Commons.

Finally, and due to the fact that this year general, autonomous, municipal and European elections were held in Spain, we promoted a campaign for the collection of ballot papers with the aim of uploading them to Wikimedia Commons. The management process of the campaign was done through an online tool and a significant number of volunteers participated.

In relation to the diversification of contents in Wikimedia Commons, in these first months we have not carried out initiatives to obtain audio or video material, but we translated the LinguaLibre with the objective of facilitating the participation of our community, so we hope that throughout the Autumn our community will contribute with a significant number of audio files.

GLAM

One of our objectives for this year is the training of GLAM staff. Thus, nine sessions have been held so far, four of them focused on Wikidata, and five more general on Wikimedia projects. The first four were held in Madrid, for the SEDIC (Spanish Society for Scientific Documentation and Information), Valencia, for the Official College of Librarians and Documentalists of the Valencian Community, San Sebastián, for the Basque Association of Archives Professionals Libraries and Documentation Centres, y Salamanca, at the Faculty of Communication and Documentation, while another took place during FESABID19, the Spanish Conference on Information and Documentation, in Barcelona, in collaboration with Amical Wikimedia, and the last four took place at the Juan March Foundation, in Madrid.

Regarding the releasement of materials from GLAM institutions, under free license, in Wikimedia Commons, we continue working on the project of collaboration with the National Geographical Institute, with the goal of uploading several thousand files of cartographic material. However, so far this year, it has not been possible to continue this upload because there was a hardware failure in Wikimedia Cloud, which affected several projects, including ours. While most of the data could be recovered, this was not the case for the NGI. These include the scripts used to download, decompress, process and upload, which were nowhere else and therefore cannot be recovered, and which will have to be redesigned, as well as some of the material, specifically the MTN50 maps, which were already in their initial upload phase.

Other activities related to this programme include two editathons held in Madrid. On the one hand, the first one in Museum of History of Madrid on April 27, with the participation of several people from its staff, and the second one in the National Archaeological Museum on May 18, which, due to coinciding with International Museum Day, focused on the creation and improvement of content related to archaeological museums in Spain.

One more year, one day a month, we organize the Wikipedia Club at the Reina Sofía library of the University of Valladolid, which served as a meeting, learning and collaboration point between Wikipedia users and interested public.

Finally, one more year, Wikimedia Spain participated in the #1lib1ref campaign between January and February, and we are in the process of renewing the MoU with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, that allow us to collaborate with the state museums network.

Education

Our objectives for 2019 in the educational field involve working with students and teachers, as well as strengthening the relationship with educational institutions. Collaboration with them continues and up to now we are collaborating with 19 different educational projects, including secondary, university and adults education, in which students edit Wikipedia articles and their work is evaluated academically. Three of these collaborations are new: the Faculty of Documentation of the Complutense University of Madrid, the Camilo Jose Cela University, the Design University of Madrid and the Vilafranca High School.

These initiatives usually begin with one or more training sessions, for students to learn wikipedia policies and how to edit, work with references, etc., and, for example, during 2019 sixteen talks or workshops have been organized, involving more than 600 people. Regarding to teacher training, which is key to the implementation and autonomous management of future educational projects, three training initiatives have been carried out; one at the University of Zaragoza, one at the Vilafranca High School and the other at the teacher training centre (Cefire) in Castelló, involving 36 teachers.

Diversity

The diversity programme aimed to increase the participation of under-represented communities and increase content on the knowledge gaps in Wikipedia and has been structured around three areas. The gender gap is one of them. Following the trail of the last years, we have organized a set of initiatives in order to incorporate more women editors and increase the number of women biographies on Wikipedia.

Thus, around the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, on February 10th we organized an editathon in the Official College of Doctors and Graduates in Philosophy and Letters of Madrid, in collaboration with its archaeology section, where articles about women archaeologists were edited. On the other hand, around the International Women's Day, on March 7th we participated again in the WikiGap global campaign with an event at the Swedish Embassy in Madrid. It was an editathon on women scientists preceded by a presentation on the situation of women in science by the journalist Teresa Guerrero.

In October, we celebrate the Day of Women Writers and for the last four years we have been collaborating with the National Library of Spain in the organization of an editathon on women writers. It was held again on the same day of the celebration, October 15th, in line with the rest of the activities programmed for that day, and volunteers from Cuarto Propio en Wikipedia and Wikimujeres participated in it. In the context of the celebration of that day, both in October and December we also organized an online editathon to promote the creation of articles about women writers among the Wikipedia community.

Also in October, on the 26th, we collaborated in the organization of an editathon on women artists in Málaga together with Colectiva. Observatorio Cultural Feminista and in which the group Cuarto Propio en Wikipedia also collaborated. In the same city, on November 29th, we gave a talk on the gender gap in Wikipedia during the event Talent Woman.

Another community we work with is older people and in 2019, within the educational field, we have carried out several sessions of dissemination, training and monitoring of their learning in the edition of Wikipedia. They were held in two adult education centres in Soria and Borriol, and in the CEU San Pablo University in Madrid.

With regard to these communities we had set ourselves some objectives in terms of participation and content editing, but we have not reached the expected figures. The reasons for this are, on the one hand, that fewer events took place than in other years; in 2019 we have devoted a lot of time and work to our strategy for 2021 and this has had an impact on less time to spend on planning and organising activities.

On the other hand, we have seen (and contrasted with what happens in other Wikimedia groups) that the face-to-face editing events, although they are an important impulse to generate community and dissemination of the Wikimedia projects, at the level of content they no longer have a significant impact, hence they do not reach certain metrics. Likewise, this led us to think, both for 2020 and for the future, about organizing more online editing events to involve the online community.

Another focus of our work was linguistic diversity. In February we organized the online initiative Intercultur, which aimed to create content in the different languages of the Iberian Peninsula. As last year, we proposed to work in 10 different languages and the selection of contents was done thanks to the tool Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory, developed by Marc Miquel.

Furthermore, in our effort to work with more local Wikipedia communities, in March we had a meeting in Zaragoza with several volunteers from Wikipedia in Aragonese, where we talked about the possibility of collaborating together as well as promoting activities or initiatives related to the Aragonese language. In addition, we continue to support the contact of the association OSCEC, which works for the language of Extremadura, with Wikipedia volunteers in Asturian, in order to learn and exchange knowledge with a view to increasing the activity in Wikipedia in Extremadura.

Finally, regarding the diversity and quality of contents, in 2019 we organized six initiatives, four of them online and two face-to-face. Throughout the year we organised the second edition of the PESCAR competition, which aims to reduce content gaps. On this occasion, the proposed articles focused on under-represented geographical areas in Oceania, Asia and Africa. In March and April, in view of the anniversary of Wikipedia in Spanish, we proposed the edition and improvement of the articles considered essential. In January we celebrated again the Antarctica Month, which focused on expanding the content on this continent and improving its visibility. In November we collaborated again in the Asian Month, with the intention of improving the quantity and quality of contents related to Asia.

At a face-to-face level, on January 18th we organized, in collaboration with the Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso Transeuropa, an editathon as part of the Wiki4MediaFreedom initiative, which aims to systematize, expand and update the Wikipedia entries on freedom of information and threatened journalism in Europe. Also, throughout the year (except Summer), and organized regularly with two sessions a month, the Wikimedia Lab in Medialab-Prado Madrid, where a group of volunteers work, share and exchange knowledge around different topics; thus, during the first half of the year the focus was on multimedia content, and during the second half on fake news and information verification in Wikimedia.

Media content

This program, whose main objectives are to increase the content and number of contributors to Wikimedia Commons, has been organized around five axes. Firstly, event coverage, thanks to which our volunteers have access to different types of events with the aim of obtaining photographs that would otherwise be difficult to obtain. The total number of events covered was 12, including sports, music, cinema and the AdaLoversConf. The coverage of minority sports, such as slalom, paddle, cyclo-cross or wheelchair basketball, and the coverage of the Goya Awards, the most important event related to cinema in Spain, are noteworthy. Regarding the latter, this is the third consecutive year that we have obtained permission to access and the material obtained is already used by 62%, in 36 languages.

In second place are the photography contests, with a total of four in 2019. Chronologically, the first was Wiki Loves Earth in May, focusing on protected natural areas. As in 2015, we again organized it jointly with Wikimedia Portugal, dividing between them the tasks of organization, dissemination and evaluation of the contest. We obtained 4015 images and 330 people participated, 271 of which were new to Wikimedia, improving the results of 2018.

The next one was Wiki Loves Monuments, in September, whose objective is protected and inventoried monuments. The number of images obtained was 8774, higher than in 2018, and the number of participants was 201, of which 121 were new, a slightly lower figure than in the previous edition. Throughout the year several volunteers were working on uploading data to Wikidata, with a view to generating future lists of heritage items from Wikidata.

In November Wiki Loves Folk took place, focusing on festivals and traditions declared to be of touristic interest. As part of the same contest, in Spring the Wiki Loves Falles campaign was carried out, promoted by the Valencian Museum of Ethnology in collaboration with Amical Wikimedia, and whose aim was to encourage people to participate and contribute with images of the Fallas in Valencia.

Finally, in December, we organized for the second time (the first was in 2017) the Wiki Science Competition, a contest focused on science. On this occasion, 26 people participated and contributed 176 files.

In addition to these activities, at the beginning of the year we organized our award ceremony for the 2018 photo contests. It took place on January 12th at Medialab-Prado, Madrid, and in addition to the awards, there were several short talks about the Wiki Loves competitions, the Wikimedia Lab, the Axiom Beta (free hardware and software for audiovisual production) and Wikipedia's 18th birthday.

Thirdly, the project Ningún municipio español sin fotografía, which after five years of work has reduced the number of municipalities to be photographed to 189 (end of 2019). In this year a total of 3021 new images were obtained. A regular group of volunteers is involved in its development and, as there are less and less places left, we are already working on a second phase to solve false positives, i.e. municipalities with photographs in Commons but which are not representative.

The Wiki Takes that we organized in May in the province of Burgos is part of the project. During three days, 12 people, four of whom had never participated in events of this kind, travelled around the province following four pre-designed routes and obtained more than 2200 photographs belonging to more than 50 municipalities. These Wiki Takes have become essential as they make it easier for our community to document areas that, due to their isolation or remoteness from the main communication routes, are difficult to cover on a regular basis. Another Wiki Takes, although not linked to this project, was the one in Pamplona, organized in October as part of our annual conference, through which several people toured the old town documenting protected heritage elements that did not yet have images in Commons.

Fourthly, the collection of ballot papers. In 2019 general elections (twice), autonomous, municipal and European elections took place in Spain, in April, May and November; therefore, as in other occasions, we promoted campaigns to collect ballots papers with the aim of uploading them to Commons and thus documenting part of our political history. The management of the campaigns was carried out through a web tool developed by one of our members and involved a significant number of volunteers, both inside and outside the association.

The fifth and last step was the recording and uploading of audio files to Commons. One of our objectives for this year was to promote the diversification of content in Commons, either through audio or video. Firstly, we translated the interface of the Lingua Libre tool to facilitate the participation of our community. In October, during our annual conferences, we offered a practical workshop on how to use this tool to record audios and, from that moment until the end of the year, several volunteers recorded a total of 1917 audios, related to the pronunciation of words, which are used by 98% in different Wikimedia projects.

As for the metrics we set as part of this program, we managed to achieve the objectives both in the number of editors in Commons and in the number of audios or videos thanks to the different initiatives previously exposed. However, we did not reach the 25,000 files that we had planned to achieve, although by a small margin. This is due to the problems related to the uploading of material from the National Geographic Institute, which we explain within the GLAM programme, and which prevented thousands of files of cartographic material from being shared (at least by 2019).

GLAM

Our main objectives for 2019 were uploading material from GLAM institutions to Commons and training staff working at these institutions. For the latter, 11 training sessions (out of five planned) were held during the year, four of them focused on Wikidata, and seven more general on Wikimedia projects, mainly Wikipedia and Commons.

The first four took place in Madrid, for the SEDIC (Spanish Society for Scientific Information and Documentation), Valencia, for the Official College of Librarians and Documentalists of the Valencian Community, San Sebastian, for the Basque Association of Archives, Libraries and Documentation Centres Professionals, and Salamanca, at the Faculty of Communication and Documentation, while the others were held during FESABID19 (Spanish Congress of Information and Documentation), in Barcelona, in collaboration with Amical Wikimedia, at the Juan March Foundation, in Madrid, and during the 6th International Congress of Contemporary Photography, at the Complutense University of Madrid.

As for the uploading of materials under free license from institutions, we have not achieved the goal of 2000 archives. Our plan was to continue working with the cartographic materials of the National Geographic Institute and upload several thousand more files, but in 2019 this was not possible due to a hardware failure in the Wikimedia cloud, which affected several projects, including ours. While most of the data could be recovered, this was not the case for the NGI. Among them were the scripts used to download, decompress, process and upload, which were nowhere else and therefore could not be recovered, and which have to be redesigned, as well as some of the material, specifically the MTN50 maps, which were already in their initial upload phase. In addition, this work is being carried out from the beginning by a volunteer, who does not always have the time, so the process has to be adapted to his time. Only the Museum of History of Madrid uploaded to Commons 58 images on heritage elements of the neighborhood where it is located and that could be used in the editathon that we organized jointly.

Precisely, related to NGI material, in December we promoted among our members a challenge to make use in Wikipedia of the materials already uploaded in 2018, the MTN25 topographic maps. Six people participated in this initiative and contributed 51 different pages.

Other activities linked to collaboration with this type of institution included the organization of two editathons. One of these, on April 27th, at the Museum of History of Madrid, which was attended by several of its staff and focused on content related to the heritage of the neighbourhood in which it is located, and another at the National Archaeological Museum, on May 18th, on the occasion of International Museum Day, in which content related to archaeological museums in Spain was edited.

The collaboration with that last one took place thanks to the agreement that we have with the Ministry of Education and Culture and that we renew every year. In 2019 we started the process to propose to the Directorate General of Fine Arts to modify the content of the agreement; until now it has emphasized the model of collaboration of wikipedian in residence and we want to agree on a broader framework of collaboration, in which any kind of initiative is possible.

Another agreement we worked on was the one signed on July 26th with the Official College of Librarians and Documentalists of the Valencian Community. It establishes a framework for collaboration between both entities in the development of activities of mutual interest, focusing on activities aimed at promoting the use of technologies in the field of higher and continuing education. Specifically, it provides for the organization and implementation of courses, seminars, meetings or conferences aimed at promoting training and research, and participation in the global campaign #1Lib1Ref. Precisely, in 2019 we participated again in the campaign, between January 15 and February 15, in which a total of 19 people contributed to Wikipedia in Spanish.

Also, in the field of libraries, during the first half of the year we organized the Wikipedia Club at the Reina Sofia Library of the University of Valladolid, which served as a meeting point, learning and collaboration between Wikipedia editors and the interested public.

Finally, at the end of 2019 we resumed contact with the Thyssen Museum in Madrid; there was an initial contact in 2014, but this time the museum showed great interest in carrying out initiatives related to Wikipedia, Wikidata and Commons.

Education

The education programme worked around three main objectives: increasing the number of editors, strengthening collaboration with educational institutions, and training teachers on Wikimedia projects. During 2019 we collaborated with 23 initiatives in the educational field (out of the 15 we had planned to do) and thanks to them 1031 students were initiated in the editing of Wikipedia, through activities in which their work in Wikipedia was part of their training and academic evaluation.

These collaborations include secondary schools (such as IES La Gándara or IES Vilafranca), universities (such as University of Valladolid, IE University, University of Burgos, Complutense University of Madrid, Technical University of Madrid, University Jaume I, University of Valencia, University Camilo José Cela, Open University of Catalonia or King Juan Carlos University) and adult schools (such as CEPA Celtiberia or the adult school in Borriol). Of all these collaborations, seven have taken place for the first time, while seven are three years old or more and nine are two years old. As part of these initiatives, or as talks, 45 dissemination or training sessions on Wikipedia and its functioning took place throughout the year, involving 1631 people.

Regarding teacher training, which is key to the implementation and autonomous management of these or future educational projects, three training actions were carried out; one at the University of Zaragoza, another at the IES Vilafranca and another at the teacher training centre (Cefire) in Castellón, with a total of 36 teachers participating.
