Programs

edit

Please describe any changes to your programs for the upcoming funding period, including the addition of new programs or any programs you are no longer doing. Include your rationale for any major changes to your programs here.

We simplified last year's programs by merging Wikimedia-related Content and Tech programs into one Community program. We also merged Education, which had been an independent program, into Outreach, since the Wikileap project and its external funding ended in May 2018.

Please use the templates provided to add information about each program you are planning for the upcoming funding period.

Outreach

In 2019 our key events for outreach are the Women's month in March, the Parliamentary elections in Finland, and Wiki Loves Monuments. Other key aspects are to extend the activity area from southern Finland to other parts of the country through WLM partnerships and library cooperation.

Wiki Loves Monuments

We will organize Wiki Loves Monuments for the third time in cooperation with the National Heritage agency. We aim to get 3,000 photographs, 100 participants and 50 new users, of whom at least 5 will continue editing Wikimedia projects afterwards. To make sure that the new editors continue, we will organize a prominently marketed after-edit-a-thon utilizing the photographs taken during the competition.

With assistance from the National Heritage agency, we will extend Wiki Loves Monuments to regional GLAMs and to local history groups in different parts of Finland. Wikidocumentaries will meet with local history organizations and inform them about WLM at the same time. In return, we provide remote support for Wikimedia tech at their events. We aim to organize 5 WLM-related photo hunts together with local actors outside of Helsinki. As part of the United Nations International Year of Indigenous Languages, we will translate WLM banners and rules into Northern Saami and link the Northern Saami Wikipedia to the competition. This will be done in collaboration with Wikimedia Norway.

The rephotography sub-competition of WLM will be further developed. We have received funding from the City of Helsinki for a 3-year Helsinki rephotography project with Wikidocumentaries and Ajapaik. Our preliminary schedule is to add Wikimedia login, Commons upload and social media sharing to the Ajapaik app and to launch the project for a large audience in March. The WLM 2019 will include a Helsinki-themed rephotography track. Our first-year goal is to have a usable platform and workflow to upload photos to Wikimedia Commons and 1,000 users who have tested the app.

Our aim is to get Finnish WLM data (photographer, description, id, coordinates, license) as part of the structured data pilot for Wikimedia Commons.

Women’s Month

We will continue with the Women’s Day initiative with the aim of branding it as a yearly highlight. This will include an edit-a-thon organised in Helsinki Central Library Oodi (or elsewhere) and, in the vein of last year’s success, a Punaisten linkkien naiset (Women in Red) editing competition organised in the Finnish Wikipedia. We will seek out new partners through the contacts made in last year’s WikiGap. Our goal is to have 1,000 new, well-sourced biographies of women created and 40 new editors during the initiative. The ultimate objective is to fix content gaps and cultivate gender diversity among editorship.

Libraries

In 2019, we will introduce a more strategic cooperation with regional libraries with Wiki Loves Monuments and an initiative with the new Helsinki Central Library Oodi.

The most prominent form of cooperation with Oodi is the use of the library space as an event arena. We start weekly meetings for the general public at Oodi, which is easy for everyone to reach due to its central location next to the main train station, in December 2018. Our plan is to present one project, such as Wikidata, Public art project and Helsinki rephotography, per week and the meeting will concurrently work as a place for live meetings for the community program. We will count it as a success if we are able to keep up with the weekly meetings throughout the year.

We will activate librarians around the country via #1lib1ref and mediate training to organize edit-a-thons in libraries. We will organize 3 training sessions. We will also participate with a presentation in the Finnish National Library Congress 2019. The goal is to get at least 100 #lib1ref edits in the Finnish Wikipedia, turn at least 10 librarians into new editors, and reach 50 people via training. Regional libraries will also promote the Wiki Loves Monuments competition.

We will also continue our support for the Finnish branch of the Wikipedia Library initiative by keeping the current donations ongoing (SKS, Gaudeamus, Tilastopaja). We aim to get one new donation for the library.

Parliamentary elections 2019

Finnish parliamentary elections will be held on April 14, 2019. Our main target is to import Finnish parliamentary members and ministers to Wikidata in the format defined by Wikiproject Every Politician prior to the elections. Our secondary target is to import open data from avoindata.eduskunta.fi, which is published in the summer of 2018, to Wikidata. We use imported data in All Digital Week, Open Education Week and Open Data Day in March 2019. Our target is to publish one webinar about querying parliamentary election data with SPARQL, to hold one public lecture for 30 people, and to organize one workshop for 20 people.

Education

In our higher education project, we will focus on importing the best practices of Wikiproject Medicine to the Finnish Wikipedia. We will do a pilot with one course, where medical students learn to popularize medical content by producing Wikipedia articles on inadequately represented subjects on the Finnish Wikipedia. Our goal is to have 25 important medical articles updated with reliable sources and to get 25 students introduced to Wikiproject Medicine. After the pilot, we will produce a white paper and/or promotional video on the subject “popularizing medical information through Wikipedia”. We aim to find partners at the universities interested in popularizing researched medical information and advancing media literacy, as the spreading of false medical information has been a concern among medical students.

Open Data and SPARQL query in Education

In 2019, we will cooperate with Open Knowledge Finland and IT Educators in organizing events. Teromakotero from the Wikileap project learned Wikidata and SPARQL queries this year and in 2019, he will share his skills. We have already decided on two events: one in November 2018 and the other in February 2019. It will also be possible to participate online. We are expecting about 20 participants for the first one and 30 for the second one. The main target audience is teachers and students, but both events are open to everyone.

Wikileap

The Wikileap community will continue their Wikileap project and WMFI will continue to provide tech support for it. During last year, Wikileap started to extend their work to higher education books. One of the books is the “Gymnasium Table Book” (Lukion taulukot), which is a certified reference book intended for Finnish gymnasium students (European academic secondary school). The book was openly licenced mid 2018 and published on Wikimedia Commons. The current issue is to convert the book formulas into LaTeX from scanned pictures. Wikimedia Suomi is participating in the project by trying to find a technical solution to the OCR conversion issues for formulas and to make the book editable in Wikibooks.

Partnerships

Our goal in the Partnerships program is to collaborate with GLAMs and other institutions to create a mutually beneficial relationship, where Wikimedia receives high-quality input from experts and the experts of these organizations can, in turn, learn about the Wikimedia movement and the tools we offer, and will be motivated to use them in the future.

The larger objective of this program is to offer accessible, high-quality information and tools to the general public through cooperation with institutions, especially public institutions such as museums and libraries. We are also developing methods on how to give crowdsourced and enriched data back to the GLAMs.

Workshops

Editing Wikidata manually is important for showing how Wikidata works. In getting people in organizations like the National Library, National Archives, Yle, the Library Network of Finland, and Aalto University to be more involved, a key aspect is to teach them how to use mass-editing tools like OpenRefine, Mix'n'match, and SPARQL. To do this, we plan on organizing 5 workshops for 5–15 people where we expect the participants to export and update datasets without coding skills. We are creating 4 mix-n-match tasksets with Finto for linking Wikidata and Finto ontologies. One of the tasksets will be crowdsourced for the public. We will support the National archives project in linking their heraldic ontology to Wikidata using Finto’s YSO-paikat ontology Wikidata-linking as an example.

Data imports and CC0

The JHS189 (public administration guideline) recommends CC-BY as a default license. In 2019, we will contact JUHTA (Advisory Committee on Information Management in Public Administration) and ask them to extend the recommendation to include CC0 for data.

We will make 5 data imports with organizations to show how data is imported to Wikidata. We are focusing on data that we are planning to use in the near future so we can show why opening data is important and how it can be used. We will extend the Wiki Loves Monuments target lists by importing information on municipally protected buildings to Wikidata.

Hackathons and events

We will try to listen to what organizations would like to do and embrace and extend things that they already do well. For example, we will participate in 6 events, such as hackathons, museum nights, and student days and prepare one good use case for each one and write a blog post about it once the event is over.

We will continue to cooperate with the Wikidocumentaries project, where WMFI works as a consultant in Wikimedia-related themes. We will take part in initiatives to collect local data about municipalities (buildings, basic facts, history, actors) in Wikidata, and to cooperate with local heritage associations to organize events, datathons, photo hunts, and photogatherings, as well as to collect information.

Heraldry project

The Heraldry project by the Finnish National Archive and Aalto university will continue. In 2018, the project created a heraldry image dataset from Wikimedia Commons as part of Lentokonefani’s Wikimedian in Residence term. In 2019, they will create a model so that they can represent heraldry elements as linked data. The project has applied for a grant from the Kone Foundation for 2019. If granted funding, the project will also use a Commons image dataset as learning/testing material for their linked data model.

Community

With this program, our goal is to make editing easier both for newcomers and existing editors and to achieve a more welcoming atmosphere.

We will develop a community project that sets its sights on the 500,000 article milestone in the Finnish Wikipedia – the project will focus on missing essential encyclopedic articles or knowledge gaps. The new quality content would be used in promoting this half a millennial article encyclopedia to a broader audience. For community members, we will also organize one bigger content creation-related event.

Top 5

To remove barriers, we selected five areas to focus on. They were chosen based on discussions with community members and new editors at events throughout the year. The problems these focus areas aim to solve have been a discussion topic at the Kahvihuone (“Village pump”) in the Finnish Wikipedia. We will organize our work in Wikipedia as wikiprojects and create a space for coordination with weekly online meetings and organize meetings in Oodi. We also give technical assistance to make things happen.

  1. We will start a wikiproject focusing on updating outdated instructions on-wiki. Currently the content of most help-pages related to editing is 10 years old. We measure success through number of active editors, edited help pages and video guides. We target five editors, 30 reviewed pages and 10 videos.
  2. To make editing easier we will see that 50 common templates that can be added from quickbuttons of the old wikieditor will work with the visual editor by updating their TemplateData. We will also generate Wikidata descriptions for all templates so that the correct template can be more easily selected from VisualEditor.
  3. Missing values in autogenerated references is a barrier for VisualEditor approval. To solve this, we will add parsers for the 20 most used news sources in the Finnish Wikipedia to Citoid/Zotero so that VisualEditor will fill in the “publish date”, “author” and “publication” fields. We will also write a guide on how Zotero translators can be done.
  4. To keep Wikidata adoption flowing, we will convert the next 10 infoboxes into Wikidata infoboxes, and get community members to convert another 10.
  5. The Finnish Wikipedia uses ORES as its backend for protecting pages and reviewing edits with Flagged Revision. To make it more accurate, we will finish a new labeling campaign to get more reviewed teaching material for machine learning.
    • We will also propose improving ORES accuracy as a project to Aalto University’s machine learning students. More specific use cases would be a vandalism revert bot, enabling the ORES “Article quality” model for the Finnish Wikipedia to track of article quality changes.

We consider tasks to be successful when the tasks described in the bullet list are done, except the first one, where updating the help pages is an ongoing project.

Public art

We will continue to support the Public artworks and memorials of Finland project. The community has adopted it as a continuous and ongoing process. In 2018, there are currently 6500 pieces of art listed, of which 60% has been photographed and 85% geotagged. In 2019, we aim to increase this to 70% photographed and 95% geotagged. We continue with the project of exporting information of current lists into Wikidata; using the information on Wikidata in Wikipedia. We will create a best practices document to guide community members in further self-organizing photo hunts.

International

We will continue to strengthen our collaboration with the international Wikimedia movement, especially with our neighboring Wikimedias of Estonia, Sweden, and Norway. We will participate in international meetings and organize contests and events. Wikimedia Suomi supports the creation of Wikimedia Northern Europe, with whom we will collaborate and help build the organization. For Wikimania 2019, we would like to help WMNE organize a pre-conference event in Stockholm. We will help out Wikimedia Sweden in mapping Finnish GLAMS. We will take part in Wikimedia hackathons and Wikidata-related events.

Outreach

Wiki Loves Monuments

We have started to organize Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 for the third time with the National Heritage Agency. The theme this year is Sacred Place, which we are approaching by adding around 4500 archaeological sites and updating information about religious buildings. We are also collaborating with the Finnish Museum of Photography, which will hold an event during the first week of the competition. We are exploring the possibility to tie this in with our emerging activities around working with Saami media. The Helsinki rephotography project started at the beginning of 2019 and we are preparing a rephoto track about lost places for WLM.

Saami projects

As part of the International Year of Indigenous Languages, we are collaborating with the Northern Saami Wikipedia and Wikimedia Norway to support the Saami languages. We are initiating collaboration projects with Open Knowledge Finland, Yle, and the Saami Archives about describing media concerning the Saami culture in the Saami languages. In preparation for this, we have filed tickets to add support for the Saami and Finnish Roma languages to Wikidata and SDC. As a result, Inari and Skolt Saami are currently enabled and Ume Saami, Kildin Saami, and Finnish Kalo are still pending. A secondary target has been to document how new minor languages could be added to Wikidata. For more information on this work, please see the longer description in our program story.

Muijii Wikipediaan edit-a-thon hosted by Jenni Janakka and Wikimedia Suomi at Redland's headquarters in Helsinki, Finland on April 26, 2019
Women’s Month

As part of the Women’s Day initiative, we ran a week-long Women’s competition in March as a part of the weekly competitions held in the Finnish Wikipedia. In April 2018, we held a “Punaisten linkkien naiset” (Women in Red) competition as one of our monthly competitions. We also had two live edit-a-thons. In total, there were 112 participants at these events, of whom 36 were new editors. 1239 new articles were created and 770 photos added to articles.

Both competitions were organized in collaboration with the Finnish Wikipedia community and used Danmichaelo’s UKBot from the Norwegian Wikipedia to count points. This year we expanded the language selection and included Northern Saami in both competitions and Inari Saami and Skolt Saami for the monthly competition. When we released information about the competition, we made sure that it was released in Northern Saami too on our blog. On Facebook, we also made sure that information about the event was in Skolt Saami on Wikimedia Finland's page. The Northern Saami Wikipedia page advertised the event in Northern Saami, Inari Saami, and Skolt Saami in addition. This was the first time these languages could be used in our competitions and to the best of our knowledge, this was the first time that languages in the incubator have been used in any competition.

The first edit-a-thon organized by us was a local support meetup for the Women in Red project in Oodi; four people participated, which was the same number of people who participated in the pre-Wikigap meetup last year. The second one, called Muijii Wikipediaan was organized by Finnish author and public speaker Jenni Janakka, the Redland agency, and Wikimedia Finland. This event was substantially more popular with 30–40 participants.

Janakka talked about the event and the Women in Red project twice on radio broadcasts: once before the event on Radio Helsinki (26.4.2019, time 00:30) and once afterwards on Yle’s Kulttuuriykkönen discussion program, where the topic was equality on Wikipedia and on the Internet in general. Later the interview was relinked from Yle's article related to Wikipedia's gender issues in July. There was also a short report of the event in the trade union magazine from Redland's point of view. A total of 5 blog posts were written about the events: two by us ([1], [2]), two by Jenni Janakka ([3], [4]), and one by the Finnish blogger Miss Ruki Ver, who blogged about her participation in the Muijii Wikipediaan event.

Preparing meetup in Library Oodi in Helsinki, Finland. - Event of Wikiproject Oodi in 28th January 2019, adding public art to Wikidata.
Libraries

We started the year with our meetings in Oodi that are open to everyone. So far 8 meetings have been held, including Wikimedia Finland’s spring meeting. The average number of participants has been 7 and the most prominent topic has been Wikidata and more specifically, Open Refine hands-on tutoring. We also participated in All Digital Week’s Oodi Day by Bildningsalliansen with a presentation booth, rephoto walk, and one presentation related to the public art project.

When Oodi opened in December 2018, Kulttuurinavigaattori started a themed 100 wikidays project as a followup for his 2018 residency for presenting and promoting Wikipedia in the Finno-African culture center Villa Karo in Grand-Popo, Benin. He went almost every day to Oodi to write a new article between 25.12.2018 - 3.4.2019 and reported his progress on Facebook. (cf. for his blog post his progress).

We have not participated in #1lib1ref this year. Jaakko participated in the National Library Congress (Library Days) in person, but we did not have a presence there. We have one Wikidata teaching event with the National Library this autumn.

The current donations (SKS, Gaudeamus, Tilastopaja) to our Wikipedia library are ongoing, but we do not yet have any new donations.

Parliamentary elections 2019

We had one politician-related workshop for 10 people at the Open Data Day. The current parliament members are in the three-star format of Wikiproject Every Politician. During the All Digital Week, we focused on photographing instead of elections. We did not have any specific politics event during Open Education Week.

Education and Wikiloikka

Together with IT Educators, Tero, Kimmo, and Tarmo held a series of semantic web lectures and workshops for 15 IT teachers in their two-day spring seminar in February and two workshops in eOppimiskeskus summer school for 10 people in June. The spring seminar contained presentations on the history of the semantic web, how Wikidata/Wikipedia is currently used by organizations like the National Library, Yle, Apple Siri, and Google search, and what is the status of the semantic web at the University of Helsinki. After that, we held a practical SPARQL query writing workshop. Both the event itself and the earlier SPARQL presentation were covered in the IT teachers’ magazine. In their summer school, Teromakotero organized SPARQL and open data workshops.

We also updated our original scan of Lukion taulukot with a much higher quality version and performed OCR on it. 41 of the 121 pages in the Lukion taulukot book have been converted to Wiki format and proofread.

Localizing the Wikiproject Medicine project for the Finnish Wikipedia has not yet begun as our key person who was leading this got a full-time job and is focusing on that instead.

Partnerships

In Wikimedia Finland's June workshop, we learned to tag photographs in Northern Saami, Inari Saami, and Skolt Saami.

Susannaanas explaining Wikidata and OpenRefine in Open data day 2019 event by OKFi.
Workshops and events

In the first part of the year, we held 7 Wikidata-related workshops together with several organizations (1 Saami language workshop in Oodi, 1 at the Open Data Day, 1 Q&A for Iltalehti data journalists and 4 with IT-teachers reported in outreach), the total number of participants being 75. The workshops focused specially on Wikidata editing, SPARQL queries and OpenRefine. The Open Data Day was a larger one day event organized by OKFI. In the IT-teachers' events, our workshops were part of their multiple day events. The Saami language workshop was targeted to language students and language professionals and it focused on how to use lexical data on Wikidata and structured data on Commons with Saami. It was also a prework for future work with Yle and the Saami archive in autumn.

WMFI organized Wikipedia edit-a-thons with the National Audiovisual Archive in January and with the Lönnström Art Museum in Rauma in May. The total number of participants for these was 13.

In our previous SAPG for 2017, one of our long-term targets was that WMFI would not be the sole organizer of Wikipedia edit-a-thons and would instead encourage and support the institutitons to organize them independently, thus allowing growth. So far, there have been 4 such workshops in 2019 organized by institutions that we have collaborated with before. The most notable ones were the Edit History edit-a-thon with the game museum of Tampere and the Aboa Vetus & Art Nova museum in Turku as well as Wikipedia tutoring for the museums of Eastern Uusimaa.

Data imports and CC0

WLM and Helsinki rephotography related data imports in 2019:

  • Streets and places of Helsinki (1000 items)
  • Buildings from cultural heritage buildings catalog (1100 items)
  • Archeological sites and terms (4700 items)
  • Other imports include importing data of historical Finnish newspapers (300 items) and Finnish visual artists (600 items).
  • We have also supported other people's data imports.

To generate more support for open licenses and CC0, Susanna Ånas participated in the Ministry of Education and Culture's copyright-related meetings (INSPIRE directive location data workgroup, Digime-meeting, copyright in cultural heritage workshop). Susannaanas and Kulttuurinavigaattori also participated in Wikimedia's Big Fat Brussels Meeting VI and in the European Union's privacy directives in a galleries-libraries-museums seminar in Helsinki.

Susanna Ånas also participated in the Creative Commons Summit 2019, OpenGLAM calls, and other NGO related copyright work in general. She made a presentation on Knowledge Equity in the WWW 30 years club by m-cult.

Heraldry project

The heraldry project did not receive a Kone foundation grant for 2019, so it is continuing as the Finnish National Archive’s own internal project.

Community

500,000 article milestone

The 500,000 article project has not yet begun. We estimate that we will hit this milestone midway through 2020.

Five areas to focus on
# Task Status
1 Updating outdated documentation We started in January to organize meetings in Oodi to educate users on how to edit templates, to use Wikidata, and to use tools as planned. This, however, has not yet transformed into writing the documentation.
2 Improve templateData TemplateData for X of 50 templates has been updated, focusing on those that can be used in namespaces where VisualEditor is enabled. Wikidata descriptions have not yet been generated
3 Reference autogeneration We have not started to write Zotero translators for Citoid
4 Convert 20 infoboxes to Wikidata 2 infoboxes have been converted.
5 improve ORES in Fiwiki The new ORES labeling campaign was finished in April
Public art project

Kulttuurinavigaattori presents Public art project in Oodi

Between January and June, 700 new public artworks and memorials were listed in Wikipedia. 600 were located using coordinates and 480 were photographed by a total of 22 photographers. This means that approximately 90% (target 95%) of the artworks have been geotagged and 70% (target 70%) photographed. Currently 55 users have edited the artwork lists, of whom 5 were new users registered in 2019 (stats, wikiproject).

However, only 5% have been linked to Wikidata. In our Oodi meet-ups, we have shown the people in the Public Art Project how to use Wikidata. We wrote a guide for community members on how to self-organize photo hunts. Kulttuurinavigaattori submitted a poster about the public art project to Wikimania 2019.

International collaboration

The Northern Saami Wikipedia and WMNO at Riddu Riđđu 2019

In the first part of 2019, we have collaborated with Ajapaik from Estonia. For our Saami project, we have collaborated with Wikimedia Norway and Sweden and coordinated the effort using Wikimedia Finland’s Slack and email.

The Finnish Wikipedia also continued to use UKBot in weekly competitions and added support for participating in competitions with writing articles in the Northern Saami Wikipedia or in the incubator for Inari and Skolt Saami. The feature was originally developed for the Norwegian Wikipedias. With Wikimedia Finland's help, we updated Wikidata and infobox modules in the Northern Saami Wikipedia.

Kimberli participated with Wikimedia Norway in the Oslo Freedom Forum in May and gave a joint presentation 2019 Year of Indigenous Languages – Saami Languages with Jon Harald Søby from Wikimedia Norway at the Celtic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference in July. She also represented the Northern Saami Wikipedia at Wikimedia Norway's booth at the international indigenous festival Riddu Riđđu the same month. For this event, she created a table of artists and guests Riddu Riđđu based on Jon Harald Søby's table for Oslo Freedom Forum to show which Wikipedias they have articles in and which they do not and also a list of the artists who do not yet have even a Wikidata item. These tables were also added to the WIR project on the English Wikipedia. In August, she will also give a presentation at Wikimania with Astrid Carlsen about solutions to quality issues in the Northern Saami Wikipedia and another with Susanne Ånäs about about ways of working in Wikimedia projects without needing to have a Wikipedia in that language. For Wikimania, we are organizing an after event in Helsinki.

Outreach

Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 award ceremony at National museum

Helsinki then-and-now exhibition in Helsinki Central Library

For 2019 our three main targets were Women’s month, Wiki Loves Monuments/Helsinki rephotography and using the new Helsinki central library Oodi as a meeting place.

Women's month and education programs were in the first part of the year and were successful. Women's month got 1239 new articles, 112 participants at these events, of whom 36 were new editors. It is covered in more detail in the midpoint report. The SPARQL/Wikidata education project participated in two multi-day events for the teachers. At the end of the year 2019 the Lukion taulukot book was converted into Wiki format and proofread. Lukion taulukot project also got a 2000€ grant from Kansan sivistysrahasto for finalizing the scanned book.

Wiki Loves Monuments, Libraries collaboration and Helsinki rephotography work were ongoing the whole year, interconnected and their results were mixed. There were success stories like we added the Sami languages to our Wiki Loves Monuments campaign as part of the International Year of Indigenous Languages and extended our competition to the north. We participated in the celebration of 70 years of the Skolt Saami in Sevettijärvi event, The Sacred Place workshop on how to use with respect the cultural heritage of indigenous people at the Finnish Museum of Photography, gave a presentation about the results of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition and had a rephotography track at the Photo Archive Days.

Helsinki rephotography did 12 photo walks. 6 photo walks were intended mainly for smaller groups of 3 - 10 participants. Another 6 were traditional guided photo walks for learning the history of the area using historical photographs with 10-30 participants. With Oodi as event space itself, we had workshops or smaller meetings in Oodi. It also became our ad-hoc meeting place. Helsinki's rephotography project also had a rephotography exhibition in the Brygga event space of Oodi which had 8000 visitors in 2019.

However, there were also targets that just didn't happen as we didn't have time or we just redefined our plans for various reasons. The biggest single reason was that handling the changes in board, roles, and growth at the same time was more complex than expected. This is visible in results numbers too. In an example, WLM got 1600 photos when the target was 3000. Helsinki rephotograph got 250 participants instead of 1000.

Wikimedia table in Õõutveäkka. 70 years since the resettlement of the Skolt Saami in Sevettijärvi, Finland. August 24, 2019

In 2019 our main numeric targets were to organize at least 5 data-related workshops for 5-15 people and to organize at least 6 events that were part of a larger event.

For Wikidata related workshops we did 8 events. In the second half of the year we had a post-Wikimania meetup with the National Library’s Finto team for 10 people. 7 other events were in first part of the year and were covered in midpoint report.

As part of a larger event we organized 7 workshops or presentations. At All digital Week, Õõutveäkka and Collaborative Game Histories events we had a Wikimedia info booth and held presentations. At Kuva-arkistopäivät (photo archive days) we had a presentation about Wiki Loves Monuments and Helsinki rephotography. On December 5th we had a drawing workshop for kids as part of the 1st birthday of the central library Oodi in our Helsinki then-and-now rephotography exhibition. Lentokonefani also had a presentation on Heraldry in Wikipedia in Studia Heraldica series by Heraldica Fennica.

The following plans didn’t actualize. Creating 4 mix-n-match task sets did not happen in 2019. Planned collaboration with Wikidocumentaries didn’t realize either.

Public art project

In 2019, 770 new public artworks and memorials were listed in Wikipedia. 800 were located using coordinates and 1176 were photographed by a total of 32 photographers. This means that approximately 97% (target 95%) of the artworks have been geotagged and 70% (target 70%) photographed. Currently, 83 users have edited the artwork lists, of whom 7 were new users registered in 2019 (stats, wikiproject). Still, only ~5% have been linked to Wikidata.

Public art project had a poster in Wikimania and a presentation on Listing public art into Wikipedia in Finland in Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2019

International collaboration

Wikimedians from Wikimania looking at the statue of Alexander II of Russia in Helsinki

In 2019 we had a presentation, poster or workshop in 10 international Wikimedia events. We also continued our last year's effort to write to This Month in GLAM and released 5 Finland reports. Our board member Yupik was selected to language committee. WMFI worked also to simplify the process to add new languages to Wikidata and Structured data on Commons.

We changed Finnish Wikipedia's weekly competition rules so that we allowed writing articles in the Northern Saami Wikipedia or in the incubator for Inari and Skolt Saami. Most successful was the competition of the week of Sami language where 38 articles from northern Sami Wikipedia were edited.

For Wikimania 2020 in Stockholm, Wikimedia Suomi coordinated a group trip for 10 people from Finland to Wikimania so people got the same travel options and hotel. After Wikimania, we arranged a post-Wikimania Helsinki photo tour for two different groups. With the first one we did a library walk from Senate square to Oodi and with the second one we had a guided tour in the Parliamentary house, then visited Oodi and then the National Library.

We participated in the Wikimedia Northern Europe meeting in Tartu. During the Northern Europe meeting, we also planned to organize rephotography events together with WMEE in 2020. As part of the Nothern Europe meeting, there was also a visit to the Museum of Photography. In the museum, Ajapaik had an exhibition of Estonian original photos. Vahur Puik gave a presentation about it. The exhibition's tablet software was jointly developed for Oodi and Tallinn exhibitions.

After Kulttuurinavigaattori's history of Benin themed 100 wikidays project he got granted a second Villa Karo term from mid-October to mid-December as Wikipedia specialist. In autumn 2019 we started a new Benin Bilateral Companionship program for sharing knowledge between Wikimedia Finland and Benin Wikimedia user group.
