Connections and outcomes

After hearing Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight speak about the Women in Red and Gender Diversity Mapping projects, I plan to contribute to these initiatives by sharing about my gender- and LGBT-related projects within the Wikimedia movement.

Approximately 25 people attended the on-site LGBT+ Meetup, which is the largest attendance as far as I can recall. Notes from the meeting can be found on the Wikimania wiki. One outcome from the meeting was to create a Facebook group (not to be confused with the existing Facebook page) to encourage editors interested in creating and improving LGBT-related content to collaborate on outreach projects.

I also enjoyed meeting with the Art+Feminism organizers and sharing about my experience (co-)organizing around 10 meetups in Portland, Oregon. In terms of feedback to campaign organizers, I suggested working with the Wikimedia Foundation to have local organizers supply introductory brochures for new editors. I also encouraged interested organizers to consider hosting thematic events throughout the year, in addition to the primary Art+Feminism meetup each March, such as artists of color, LGBT artists, and notable feminists and women in fields other than art. Providing multiple opportunities for editors to contribute throughout the year may help with retention, and allow newer contributors to improve their skills.

Rosie and I, in our roles as Program Committee members, also met with User:Sara Mörtsell (WMSE) to discuss the upcoming Wikimedia Diversity Conference.

WikiConference North America

WikiConference North America preceded Wikimania. I served on the safety committee, participated in the Wiki Culture Crawl and Montreal Photo Drive, and attended keynote addresses and a variety of sessions. I uploaded more than 250 photographs during my time in Montreal, which can be seen here.

After hearing from Sherry and Alice speak about AfroCrowd, I created a short Wikipedia article for the organization. I also appreciated hearing Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight speak about the Women in Red and Gender Diversity Mapping projects. I plan to speak with her about some of my experiences working on gender- and LGBT-related initiatives within the Wikimedia movement. Much thanks to everyone who made this regional conference come to fruition, especially the organizers!
