Outcome

My major objective was to establish connections relevant to the creation and maintenance of articles for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Option 3: New Creation: What was one useful outcome that was created at the event for the Wikimedia movement?

While most of the time readers are only interested in articles about athletes from their own country, the Olympics and Paralympics is a time when there is increased interest in athletes from other countries. There is scope here for sharing the load between contributors across language wikis. I discussed the matter with Mike Peel and he came upon with the idea of creating a Wikidata version of inbox:sportsperson. The idea being that it will facilitate the creation of articles in different languages. The new template was created at Wikimania, and an article I had written was modified to use it. Thus, we have a new article, and a new wikidata template, which can potentially be used on tens of thousands of articles. I will be following this up now that I am back.

Connections

An early coup was finding an editor from Brazil, who just happened to be be lodged at the same location as myself. While we have good resources for this project, This will provide a useful contact, although he doesn't edit sports articles, but it was a start. I spoke to the Israeli, Swedish, Netherlands, German and French contingents. The Netherlands and Germany have some people working on the articles, but no organised effort. The French do have an organised effort,[1] and I will see if we can send an Australian representative to that.

Also spoke to Liam Wyatt regarding OCLC. He has a contact there, and we will see if we can get them to add Wikipedia references to their pages. (Thay can be generated automatically from their metadata) Will be pursuing this too, as it will greatly assist providing proper referencing of articles.

Anything else

Also renewed some friendships from the earlier Wikimania I attended in Hong Kong in 2013, and found some new contacts for the military articles. Actioned verbal requests from various editors to help process their DYK articles.
