Project scope
editFrom June 24-26, 2011, the first Ibero-American Wikimedia Summit will be held in Buenos Aires and representatives from Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Chile, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela will be invited, as well as a representative of the WMF Board, as well as representatives from the Chapters Committee.
We will deal with different topics and challenges having to do with both our region and the Wikimedia movement as a whole, speaking in our native languages and including not only existing chapters but also those groups that are making their first steps towards organization.

- The project for an Ibero-American Wikimedia Summit has been officialy presented by Wikimedia Argentina to Asaf Bartov, WMF Head of Global South Relationships, who has expressed the Foundation's enthusiasm and support for organizing the event.
Project goal
editWe want the Ibero-American Wikimedia Summit to be useful for future, new and existing chapters; to establish a landmark on using languages other than English on the global level; to produce input for the WMF and chapters on implementing the movement’s strategic goals in Ibero-America; and especially to help strenghtening the Wikimedia movement in Latin America, as a particular region within the developing world/Global South/Third World (we’ll also discuss this ‘Global South’ concept).

Wikimedia Argentina will cover on its own all costs having to do with accommodation, logistics and catering.
Other benefits
editFrom the Foundation side, this will enable people from the Board and staff to get in touch with different groups in Latin America that are otherwise difficult to reach, partly because of the linguistic barrier.
As for media attention, Wikimedia Argentina believes we can get an important level of attention by organizing some public activities on June 26, after the Summit's official closure. The Ibero-American approach can be especially interesting for both intergovernmental agencies (OEI) and corporations who take the region as a business location and may be able to partner with us.
Measures of success
editIt is difficult to establish quantitative measures of success for such an ambitious event. However, we expect great qualitative advances in the organization of the Wikimedia movement in Latin America, as well as increasing collaboration towards common projects among Ibero-American chapters and working groups.
The Summit will produce, however, documentation that will serve as an important input for both the Fondation and Wikimedia chapters. It will document the regional perspective on the strategic goals, the Global South, possible alternate organizations models in Latin America, etc. We will share all of this ideas and conclussions with the rest of the movement in Wikimania 2011.
On the other hand, sharing experiences and know how between established chapters and newly formed groups will translate into an increased level of activity and enhaced organization models in the short to mid term.
