edit
  • We will attend and participate in the Kolkata Book Fair 2012 (http://www.kolkatabookfair.net/). The 'Kolkata Book Fair' is one of the most prestigious and active cultural event in India for last thirty five years. It is the world's largest non-trade book fair, Asia's largest book fair and the most attended book fair in the world. The estimated number of people attending this book fair is around 1,500,000 people.
  • This would be a major outreach program that would boost the growth of Wikimedia projects in English, Bengali, Odia and Assamese. (Bengali, Odia and Assamese is spoken by 23mn, 3mn and 1mn people respectively.)
  • The plan is to conduct a combination of basic introductory outreach for visitors to the stall and to encourage them to attend basic editing workshops which will be conducted at predetermined hours at the stall.
  • It is planned to conduct a series of such workshops in Bengali and English.
  • A team of 15 community members are being mobilised to participate in this event.
  • Wikimedia India Chapter has promised resources in terms of brochures and FAQ booklets and T-shirts.
  • Wikimedia India Programs team has promised resources in terms of people as well as organisational support as may be required by the community.
  • Wikipedia participation at 'Kolkata Book Fair 2012' for outreach Wikipedia/Wikimedia movement in India specially for Bengali Wikipedia.

  • Wikimedia India Chapter Membership

Project goal

edit
  • Reach out to more people to increase their understanding of how Wikimedia projects work, and enable them to pass this knowledge on to others.
  • Improving and building upon contributions to Wikimedia projects in English and eastern Indian languages - Bengali, Odia and Assamese.
  • Increasing the visibility, reach and access to Wikimedia projects in India with a definite focus on eastern Indian languages - Bengali, Odia and Assamese.

Non-financial requirements

edit
  • Swag
    • T-shirts (50)
    • Stickers (100)
    • buttons (100)
  • It will be great if some of the Wikimedia officials can attend these Fair.
  • Local Volunteer support from different cities and towns.
  • We will need to work together with local volunteers in getting the venues and other facilities from Government institutions, colleges, NGOs and companies, who will support our cause. Any support from the foundation for contacting such people or organisations are highly welcome.
  • Possibly printed copies of promotional materials like commons:File:Bengali wikipedia FAQ book.pdf or other Wikimedia goodies for distribution.

Other benefits

edit

We believe this project covers several points of the Wikimedia strategic plan. One of 2011 key goals of the foundation is to bootstrap community programs in key geographies like India. The project hopefully help in increasing people awareness of Wikipedia , to get more people contributing to the various Wikiprojects and boosting up the development of Indic language Wikipedias & India related content to English Wikipedia.

  • A strong, diverse and engaged community.
  • Growth in editorship and readership within Eastern India.

Measures of success

edit

We will consider this project a success if the funds are used for this purpose. We will be able to report on:

  • Footfall at the Kolkata Book Fair Wikimedia stall
  • Estimate of materials distributed
  • Any distinct follow-up initiatives with the attendees as a direct result of the book fair stall
  • New contributors to the Indic language & English Wikipedias (unmeasurable)
  • There are, of course, things that cannot be tangibly measured, such as the impact of the larger participation of East Indian community ( Bengali,Oriya, Assamese, Bishnupriya Manipuri major four language from Eastern India)in the dissemination of the free culture and access to knowledge via Wikipedia/Wikimedia.
