Budget breakdown

edit

(N.B.: For ease of computing and to account for currency fluctuations, rates here are quoted at P43.48=$1 if Philippine peso figures are given. All values given here are estimates.)

Monthly budget

  • Computer rental at Netopia Internet Cafe (P 50 / hr for 18 persons at 4 hours) - PHP 3,600
  • Stipend for two speakers (one from WMPH and one from Mozilla), it covers food and transportation allowance - PHP 600
  • Snacks for participants (100 per head for 18 persons) - PHP 1,800
  • Total monthly budget = PHP 6,000 (USD 138)
  • Total budget for 12 months = PHP 72,000 (USD 1,656)

As agreed with Mozilla Philippines, Wikimedia Philippines (WMPH) is sharing the cost at 50/50. So, that will cost WMPH PHP 3,000 (USD 69) for every workshop or PHP 36,000 (USD 828) for 12 months.

The amount requested for this grant is USD 828, which covers 12 workshops for the duration of 1 year.

Any extra funds left unused after the procurement/payment of all the above items shall be reallocated for use in funding WMPH projects and programs for the 2013 fiscal year, with permission from the Wikimedia Foundation.

(On the Mozilla part, the budget was approved by their HQ. Although, they have to request the budget for the workshop every month.)

Project scope

edit

Open Web Day is an idea crafted by Mozilla Philippines and Wikimedia during a meeting last November 2011. Basically, it is a joint monthly workshop for Internet newbies where Mozilla talks about programming, web design, etc. and Wikimedia talks about wiki editing and contributing to Wikipedia. The workshops will be low-barrier but regular, targeting the maximum of 30 participants.

The workshops will be held at an Internet café where participants will have hands-on sessions and try to create an account and edit Wikipedia. We had initial talks with Netopia Internet Café at Robinson’s Place, Ermita, Manila. They had a positive response and gave a proposal. We are just going to approve the proposal and set a date with them. There are plans to hold it at other Netopia branches and make it some sort of a tour. We are targeting to start the workshop on February 25, 2012.

Mozilla Philippines and Wikimedia Philippines will share the cost and audience. There will be two trainers – one from Mozilla and one from Wikimedia. We will train future trainers as well.

Typical flow of the workshop:

  • Short introduction of the organization
  • Workshop proper
    • Presentation of the speaker
    • Hands-on session
  • Q&A

Project goal

edit

The goal of this workshop is to invite new contributors to Wikipedia, letting them to have a deeper knowledge on the ins and outs of editing a wiki and ways to contribute to other Wikimedia projects. It also aims to have mutual partnerships with Mozilla Philippines, since both Mozilla and Wikimedia are like-minded organizations that advocate the open web.

Non-financial requirements

edit

We will be needing at least 20 printed copies of the "Welcome to Wikipedia" manual. We are going to use that as guide for participants during the workshop. They will return it to us after the workshop.

We are going to request also swags:

  • Stickers (200 pieces)
  • Buttons (200 pieces)
  • T-shirts for raffle (12 pieces)

Fit to strategy

edit

This project fits in with one the strategic priorities of the Wikimedia Movement, which is to increase participation in Wikimedia projects.

Other benefits

edit
  • This is a face-to-face meeting, so, it can be a social event where collaboration within Wikipedia will be more human.
  • Since this is a regular monthly workshop, it will encourage active participation of WMPH members especially those who are inclined in the teaching profession.

Measures of success

edit

We will consider this project a success if the following quantitative measures are met:

  • At least ten people show-up during each workshop
  • If the number of new editors to the Wikimedia projects increases as a result of this workshop, whether it be on the English or Philippine-language projects

Qualitatively, we will consider this project a success if we are able to build up a strong partnership with Mozilla Philippines.
