Project scope
editThe Philippine Youth Congress in Information Technology (Y4iT) is the Philippines' biggest IT event, aimed at students, professionals, educators, IT experts and enthusiasts from all over the Philippines. It serves as an enabling event for the youth, aspiring to recognize young Filipinos as key drivers, and eventually, key players, in the highly dynamic local IT industry. Various relevant and exciting IT topics are presented and discussed during the event, and already in its 8th year, Y4iT has become the biggest and most-anticipated youth congress in the Philippines, attracting more than 18,000 participants last year. Most of the participants in this conference come not from the capital region, Metro Manila, but from the countryside and other regional centers. In addition, it is the only conference of its kind to receive an official endorsement from the Philippine Department of Education.
This particular project's scope is one similar to a "grand launch" for Wikimedia Philippines (this is not the actual grand launch, however: the grand launch is being planned for October 2010): turning this event into the platform by which the chapter and its aims, projects, and advocacy can gain exposure to an audience formed from a broad national constituency. It would serve as a vehicle for us to reach out to people from all across the country, informing them of the aims, objectives and goals of Wikimedia, and spreading its message all across the Philippines, particularly to areas we may be unable to reach. Because this event is attended by people from all sectors of Philippine society, through mostly by the youth and the information technology industry, we also open opportunities for the Wikimedia projects, and the advocacy of Wikimedia in general, to be more accessible to these sectors, and to showcase how Wikimedia can be applied to more practical uses in our daily lives.
Project goal
editThe goal of this project is to allow Wikimedia, through Wikimedia Philippines, to engage both the youth and key players in the local IT industry, allowing them to learn more about what Wikimedia has to offer and what they can do to help the movement prosper, both locally and abroad. To reach this goal, WMPH would serve as a vehicle for empowering the youth: making them aware of what we do and allowing them to get on board, contributing to WMPH's advocacy of encouraging nation-building and the development of a Filipino social consciousness through the projects.
Non-financial requirements
editWe may need a copy of "Truth in Numbers" to be shown during the conference (a snippet could be shown during the five-minute video presentation allowance offered by the sponsorship package), as well as other promotional material the Foundation may deem prudent to show to which we have no access to. The Y4iT promotional booklet (will find a way to upload this outside Meta, as the booklet is copyrighted) lists several items which are included with the sponsorship, and we can use the Foundation's advice moving forward with this as well.
Fit to strategy
editThis project enables Wikimedia to maximize exposure in specific venues such as this one, and in particular during high-attendance events during the conference, which are part of the sponsorship package. This can help Wikimedia develop closer relationships with current and prospective users such as students and professionals, and showcase Wikimedia's range of services, as well as what the projects seek to do.
Other benefits
editY4iT does generate a fairly significant amount of press coverage in local media, so we believe we can get some positive media coverage on our part. In addition, exposing people to Wikimedia during the conference would indirectly expose people in the countryside and other regional centers—people who we may not be able to currently reach out to effectively—to Wikimedia, making it easier for us to reach them and engage them in the future.
Measures of success
editWe will consider this project a success if the following quantitative measures are met:
- At least 60 percent of distributable Wikimedia paraphernalia has been distributed during the conference
- At least ten people show interest in joining WMPH
- If the number of new editors to the Wikimedia projects increases as a result of this conference, whether it be on the English or Philippine-language projects
Qualitatively, we will consider this project a success if we are able to build up a strong support network by which Wikimedia Philippines can more easily roll out future regional (outside Manila) initiatives and programs.
