Questions

Dear WM-NL (ping SRientjes), thank you for the application document. If you don’t mind, I have a couple of questions:

• While the idea of a self-selected metric of “New user retention” (described as still contributing 3 months after attending a WMNL event) is very laudable, a self-selected target of “38 people” across all programs seems low for the size of this grant. Can you give a bit of detail on how new 38 people is a good impact for this sized grant? Wittylama (talk) 14:08, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for your questions, Wittylama. Here are our answers:

• Metric "New User Retention"

Editor retention is notoriously difficult to achieve. A 2012 evaluation of WikiWomen’s History Month found 2.7% retention among newly registered editors after six months. In 2013, a WMF evaluation of editing workshops reported retention of 0 - 6%; a similar evaluation of editathons in the same year on average 1.4% retention. An evaluation of Wiki Loves Monuments 2013-2014 indicated 0.5% retention after 6 months. Looking at it from a different angle, in another report by WMF 75-80% of the events evaluated had zero retention of new editors after 3 months (2013).

These are the most recent data we could find when we set our goal for 2018, and certainly the movement (and WMNL) have learned a lot since then about what works and what does not. Our goal for newly registered editors is 345, thus 38 editors retained after six months would be a retention of 11%. We hope to achieve that by providing more systematic support and follow-up after (training) events. Also, our decision to move away from one-off writing events is based on the fact that editor retention is negligible. So it is true that this particular metric will not generate the highest numbers; we do think it provides valuable insight in what for the Wikimedia-movement is a key objective: finding and holding on to new editors. Also it provides perspective for Global Metric 2: newly registered editors.

• Cooperation with WMUK

At the moment, five chapters including WMUK and WMNL are exploring the possibility of submitting a funding application to an international donor for work with immigrants in Europe. Metrics table

Hello Sandra, it seems that the metrics table does not have the right totals (table 3). I get different totals when plugging the numbers in a spreadsheet (and yes, I know, wikis are terrible for tables...). Would you be so kind and look up the numbers again and correct with strike through what might be wrong? I am sure the totals are wrong with the numbers that are there, but maybe the per-program numbers are the problem and not the totals in the end? Thank you! 1. Participants: The number of people who attend your events, programs or activities, either in person or virtually. This definition does not include people organizing activities, social media followers, donors, or others not participating directly.
2. Newly registered: The number of participants that create new accounts on a Wikimedia project. These include users who register up to two weeks before the start of the event.
3. Content pages: A content page is an article on Wikipedia, an item on Wikidata, a content page on Wikisource, an entry on Wiktionary, and a media file on Commons, etc. This metric captures the total number of content pages created or improved across all Wikimedia projects.
