Required in the US?
editHi, are these forms required in the US? What laws in the US require a user's consent to gather publicly-available information? Thanks Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 17:36, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
- Hello Rachel Helps (BYU) Good question. To clarify, it is neither US law nor laws about publicly available data, rather it is about protecting private data, especially, the international transfer of private data. Here if you collect participant names at an in-person event, rather than from public data sources, you need consent to enter them into Wikimetrics, otherwise you are making private participation and transferring it internationally to servers in the US. The laws protecting these privacy rights are not in fact US laws, they are mostly EU privacy laws and the laws of other countries protecting their citizens private data. If usernames are posted publicly it is not required, however, we recommend providing at least opt-out consent to respect our communities wishes for transparency in data use as well.
