Grants talk:IEG/Localizing HELP Contents into Khmer language for Khmer Wikipedia
Localizing vs adapting for local wiki context
editHi there! I think maybe you have met Tanvir already, but if not, let me point you to this project which may be of interest: Small Wiki Editor Engagement. I think that rather than simply translating from English to Khmer, you may want to think about what Help pages/strategies would be best adapted to the Khmer community context, and experiment with help pages and systems that have worked for other wikis of a similar size or context to Khmer. Just a thought! I'm interested to see how this idea develops :) Siko (WMF) (talk) 22:29, 30 August 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, I agree that big care is needed in choosing what content to work on. Translating mediawiki.org help pages ensures the content is good for your wiki, while translating e.g. from the English Wikipedia would be a terrible mistake because a lot of stuff would be not relevant or just terribly wrong for a smaller project (especially guidelines, policies and processes, which even help pages are disseminated with). --Nemo 14:13, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
- I agree with the statement: in Spanish Wikipedia we have ever the same problem with i18n and localization: es-ES (Spanish Castillian) is different than es-418 (LatinAmerican Spanish). Another point is translate the "core help pages": introduction, style guide and syntax help (how to apply bold, italics, etc.). In the first term, we need to know if exists the community and how translating the help make a better cooperation from new editor from Khmer language. The en.wikipedia rules are tough with the new users and doesn't support the creation of small pages without sources or just test without a huge warning sign in your talk page. Please, consider both points: do you have a community? (I assume yes, but, I don't read in the proposal), and Which are the pages or rules to be translated?. Efficient localisation
editHi. If you are interested in localisation of help pages, I discourage you from using manual translation. On mediawiki.org you can use the Translate extension, which will make sure you work survives you and is maintainable & up to date forever; it will even be useful for other languages. We currently mostly need some cleaning up of available docs, preparing for translation and importing old translation; someone translating the whole of them to a language is a perfect trial of the problems any language can face. See mw:Project:PD help and mw:Project:Language policy. --Nemo 14:08, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
