Hi there! Have you seen this other quiz idea? Might be worth exchanging thoughts, at some point :) I'm interested to see where this project goes, let us know if you have any questions as you finalize your proposal. Cheers, Siko (WMF) (talk) 06:29, 19 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hosting and targets?

edit

Hi Addis and team,

Thanks for proposing this creative idea.

2 first questions/comments from me:

  1. I'm wondering what your plan is for hosting this app - what does having a "might be free" server mean? To pass the eligibility check for an IEG (which is supposed to be done by tomorrow), you'll need to confirm that you've got a plan for hosting your app that isn't dependent on WMF engineering. Can you share any more information about this? For a low-cost experimental tool like this, I don't think you need a hosting plan that ensures your app will have a dedicated server for the next 10 years, but we would like to know that you've got something planned to make sure your game is available to users for at least a year or 2.
  2. I'd like to see some more concrete targets in your measures of success section. If, at the end of your project, you've built a game that just 1 or 2 people use, I'm not sure we'd consider that a successful project, so I'm wondering how many users you'd aim to reach at the end of 6 months? Thinking about this target should also help you give some further thought about your promotion/engagement strategy, which will, I think be really important for ensuring your game has uptake once deployed.

Best wishes, Siko (WMF) (talk) 00:00, 8 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Here is my respond to the first question:

  • Amazon Web Service, which offers a free quota per month, would be an option for the hosting plan. Other low cost services (e.g. DigitalOcean) also exist. Collecting responds gives us direct feedback of our questions designs so we can rapidly fix unpopular ones. Hosting the question pool online also makes content upgrades flexible.
  • However, the online component is not curial for the game itself. Content upgrade could be done by regular app upgrades or free in-app purchases so the need for a dedicated server could be eliminated. -Mys_721tx (talk) 06:39, 8 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

For the second question, I mean yes it's definitely not a success with only 2 or 3, or even 200 or 300 users. Thanks for remind on this issues. I think "10 thousand downloads" seems like a appropriate goal.--AddisWang (talk) 08:25, 8 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

And I invited Ted Chien, chair of Wikimedia Taiwan, to be our advisor, who is a Software Engineer works on "App Project Management, App Solution Design and Review". I consulted him some questions and it's really helpful.

Thanks for the quick answers and updates, and great idea to bring on a technical advisor as well :) If your project is recommended for funding, we will come back to discuss hosting ideas in more detail with all tools proposals before approving grants...so this will meanwhile give you some more time to think about the best way to solve this question. Cheers! Siko (WMF) (talk) 23:53, 8 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sure, thanks you!--AddisWang (talk) 02:18, 9 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for this carefully crafted proposal which I feel has a lot of positive impact potential. What I would like to learn more about is the thinking concerning potential (unhelpful) interactions between content development and the paperwork required to get the distribution going - especially given that the outreach strategy as currently outlined partially rests on content, like MH 370, the administration is bound to have views on. Thank you and best regards, --Jan eissfeldt (talk) 18:44, 8 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jan, would you mind to explain a little bit more about your thinking? I didn't get means like "interactions between content development and the paperwork" and "currently outlined partially rests on content". Sorry about it.--AddisWang (talk) 02:24, 9 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Eligibility confirmed, round 1 2014

edit

This Individual Engagement Grant proposal is under review!

We've confirmed your proposal is eligible for round 1 2014 review. Please feel free to ask questions here on the talk page and make changes to your proposal as discussions continue during this community comments period.

The committee's formal review for round 1 2014 begins on 21 April 2014, and grants will be announced in May. See the schedule for more details.

Questions? Contact us.

Please note that eligibility is dependent on the project having a hosting plan that does not rely on WMF. If your project is recommended for funding, we will work with you to gather information about your plan before an IEG can be approved. Siko (WMF) (talk) 23:55, 8 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Gamification

edit

Hi, thanks for your idea :). Well, I just read what is the problem to solve, but I don't understand if you want create a "system" (an app) to keep the user based in the gamification or just show new articles (or facts) based in the news in media. I don't see clear this point in the proposal. A second question (not related, but interesting too), how this app could be used in other Wikipedias?, your main target is Chinese Wikipedia, but I'd really like to see it in action in Spanish Wikipedia... but it's only a idea, thinking in the next step :). Regards! Superzerocool (talk) 02:04, 9 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Superzerocool, so we'd like to developed a Game-App, using questions based on Wikipedia articles that created by our team, by other Wikipedians or by our app-users, to promote people using Wikipedia during their fragmentary time and to reach the people who don't Wikipedia, or don't use Wikipedia, to start know and use it through our quiz-game. So we are not designing things to get more editors directly, but improve the coverage of Wikipedia in China instead of. The showing of articles to the public is actually my another grant project.
And for you second questions, I'd like to see, and to work on, that my effort and experience can be used by others, just like I'm happy to bring people's success projects to China. So we did plan to expand it on English and Traditional Chinese if it goes success. I think the major difficulty is the language barrier. For example, if we want to have a Spanish version, we need native Spanish speakers to translating the UI and contributing content.
Thanks for bring the confutation, which allow me to know the problems of the proposal's writing.--AddisWang (talk) 02:44, 9 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Comments from rubin16

edit

Sorry for such self-promoting name of the thread, today I am a bit tired of naming new threads or allocation of my questions to existing threads, so let it be as it is :) If it is possible, I'd like to ask the following questions rubin16 (talk) 12:09, 10 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

That's fine, it actually easy for respond. I answered some quick-respond questions, and I will come back to answer rest of these after classes. Please let me know any confusion and idea, that will be really helpful for me to improve the proposal. Thanks!--AddisWang (talk) 14:51, 10 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Budgeting:

Content creation:

  • how are you going to choose information for the content? What kind of content would you include? How many questions are you going to include to the app? How long would it take for a new gamer to pass the whole game? rubin16 (talk) 12:09, 10 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
It could come from some other quiz game and DYK, and I could also design by me or by other Wikipedians. We will try to have as more topic as we can to reach more people have different backgrounds. We'd like to have questions that is enough for people to use in one year, so it should at least around 3600 thousand. It's like a game we hope the user play as long as they can, we will update new questions continuously.--AddisWang (talk) 04:46, 11 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
    3,6 ths or 3,6 mln? :) rubin16 (talk) 04:59, 11 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for point out! It will be crazy if 3.5 million.--AddisWang (talk) 06:53, 11 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

App vs website

edit

Is there anything special that makes it necessary for it to be an app? Can you not just make it a mobile friendly website so that you do not have to worry about platforms, appstores etc.? --Ainali (talk) 20:28, 16 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

The idea is to put everything to the user side so the need to maintain a server is eliminated or minimized given the special nature of Chinese Internet environment.- Mys_721tx (talk) 01:42, 18 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the idea! It's true that a website is more easier than App, but I think the reason we choose App is same with why people using Apps instead just visiting websites. Include some ideas Mys_721tx already talked, the advantages will also cover the user behavior(like open an App is easier than remember a link), user Experience(no internet concern when using it in the subway), interaction(like the game center can allow us have a easy rank and comparing system) and etc.--AddisWang (talk) 02:58, 18 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Scope

edit

Aggregated feedback from the committee for The Wikiquiz

edit
Scoring criteria (see the rubric for background) Score
1=weak alignment 10=strong alignment
(A) Impact potential
  • Does it fit with Wikimedia's strategic priorities?
  • Does it have potential for online impact?
  • Can it be sustained, scaled, or adapted elsewhere after the grant ends?
6.7
(B) Innovation and learning
  • Does it take an Innovative approach to solving a key problem?
  • Is the potential impact greater than the risks?
  • Can we measure success?
7.4
(C) Ability to execute
  • Can the scope be accomplished in 6 months?
  • How realistic/efficient is the budget?
  • Do the participants have the necessary skills/experience?
7.9
(D) Community engagement
  • Does it have a specific target community and plan to engage it often?
  • Does it have community support?
  • Does it support diversity?
6.3
Comments from the committee:
  • The proposed game should increase the use and profile of the Chinese Wikipedia. Interesting and innovative proposal to increase awareness of Chinese Wikipedia among readers.
  • Enthusiastic and driven proposer, gamified engagement, and a reasonable budget. This is a fun one.
  • If the game is successful, the idea could be adapted to other languages, assuming it will be shared under a free licence. But all of the content would have to be replaced.
  • It likely wouldn't increase editing directly, but perhaps indirectly if more people were aware of Wikipedia.
  • People do seem to enjoy playing quiz games, and those who do are likely to be future Wikipedia users. Please look at other Wikipedia game applications (The Wikipedia Race, The Wikipedia Adventure) to get a sense of tone and mechanics.
  • This proposal has a well defined, limited scope, which means that it will likely be completed. The measures of success have been clearly stated.
  • The budget for this proposal is quite modest, so there is little financial risk, and since the result is an app, no risk of disrupting Wikipedia. The main risk is that the game will not be popular; there is more to a successful game than good programming.
  • The plan for testing in the community is a little vague. But it looks like they want to piggyback on the work they have done with the social media project, so if they build this, they will be able to get a group of people to try it out.
  • The participants appear to have the right mix of skills.

Thank you for submitting this proposal. The committee is now deliberating based on these scoring results, and WMF is proceeding with it's due-diligence. You are welcome to continue making updates to your proposal pages during this period. Funding decisions will be announced by the end of May. — ΛΧΣ21 23:59, 12 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Cancel the project

edit

Hi Siko (WMF)
The Wikiquiz project can not be continuing and going forward since one of our team members has a change of his real life, that he has faced many problems which takes his most energy and time. I did some effort to find a alternative solution but failed. So I want to cancel the Wikiquiz and send the rest of the funding back.--AddisWang (talk) 23:14, 24 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for documenting this, AddisWang! I know how much you've tried to make it happen, and appreciate the effort this team put in to try to make it work. And, since it has become clear there is no path forward now, I'm glad we're freeing up your energy for other projects now. Jtud (WMF) will work with you to return the funds and mark this project as withdrawn. Anyone is welcome to pick up this idea again in the future when the time and team is right, and of course you'll all always be welcome back at IEG in future rounds too! Best wishes, Siko (WMF) (talk) 02:08, 25 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
I am terribly sorry for the delay of this project and the subsequent cancellation. I hope I can pick up where we have left it in the future. -Mys_721tx (talk) 02:34, 25 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hello AddisWang and Mys_721tx, Although we are also sorry to about the project cancellation, we do understand that, sometimes, life happens :) and there aren't enough hours or energy left in the day to tackle more issues. We appreciate and thank you for the thought and effort you've put into the project. Here are instructions on how to return the funds to WMF. If you are sending a check, please make sure to address the envelope to my attention: Janice Tud, Grants Administrator. This should minimize delays in closing out the project and marking it 'withdrawn'. Please notify me via email at grantsadmin wikimedia.org when you have returned the funds or if you have any questions. -- Best, Jtud (WMF) (talk) 21:04, 25 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi AddisWang, I would like to confirm that WMF received the return of grant funds for US$1055, which is the full amount of the grant less the bank wire fee charged to you for receiving the funds transfer last year. We are marking your grant submission 'withdrawn'. -- Thank you, Jtud (WMF) (talk) 17:50, 12 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
