List of missing butterflies

edit

This may be a dumb question but is there a list of either pages without images of the butterfly or butterfly species without any pages/images? Commons isn't great about using projects or talk pages but if you had a list of say "here are all species of butterflies locate to X region with these all have zero images" I think that could be another concrete metric. 150 pages is impressive. An easy way make be just making a list of all Commons categories with the red links being obviously missing those butterflies. I'd suggest at Category talk:Unidentified Lepidoptera of India (I could see a list of English/Tamil/Telugu other wiki pages as well). Looking at commons:Category:Unidentified Lepidoptera of India, some sorting into various state or territory categories is needed but also by city within that. Those seem like simple sorting that don't require any expertise like butterfly identification does. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 19:03, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Ricky81682:, I am happy to answer your question. [Here] is the link where about 47000 wikidata item of butterfly species are without images. On latter occasion we will try to add species wise 'endemic to' property in wikidata. As you know that Lepidoptera family includes moth and butterfly. We are working with Butterfly species. We will try to do the proper category as per our knowledge.Thank you--Atudu (talk) 16:22, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Atudu: Okay, I don't use wikidata much but that may be useful to include here just as an another type of metric. I think people look at a backlog declining differently than just a number of useful images found. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 20:20, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Eligibility confirmed, Round 1 2021 - Community Organizing proposal

edit

This Project Grants proposal is under review!

We've confirmed your proposal is eligible for review in Round 1 2021 for Community Organizing projects. This decision is contingent upon compliance with our COVID-19 guidelines. Proposals that include travel and/or offline events must ensure that all of the following are true:

  • You must review and can comply with the guidelines linked above.
  • If necessary because of COVID-19 safety risks, you must be able to complete the core components of your proposed work plan _without_ offline events or travel.
  • You must be able to postpone any planned offline events or travel until the Wikimedia Foundation’s guidelines allow for them, without significant harm to the goals of your project.
  • You must include a COVID-19 planning section in your activities plan. In this section, you should provide a brief summary of how your project plan will meet COVID-19 guidelines, and how it would impact your project if travel and offline events prove unfeasible throughout the entire life of your project. If you have not already included this in your proposal, you have until March 3 to add it.

The Community review period is now underway, from February 20-March 4. We encourage you to make sure that stakeholders, volunteers, and/or communities impacted by your proposed project are aware of your proposal and invite them to give feedback on your talkpage. This is a great way to make sure that you are meeting the needs of the people you plan to work with and it can help you improve your project.

  • If you are applying for funds in a region where there is a Wikimedia Affiliate working, we encourage you to let them know about your project, too.
  • If you _are_ a Wikimedia Affiliate applying for a Project Grant: A special reminder that our guidelines and criteria require you to announce your Project Grant requests on your official user group page on Meta and a local language forum that is recognized by your group, to allow adequate space for objections and support to be voiced).

Please feel free to ask questions and make changes to this proposal as discussions continue during the community review period. By March 4, make sure that your proposal has incorporated any revisions you want to make and complies with all of our guidelines. If you have not already done so, you can make use of our project planning resources to improve your proposal further, too.

The Project Grant committee's formal review for round 1 2020 will occur March 5 through March 20, 2021. We ask that you refrain from making any further changes to your proposal during the committee review period, so we can be sure that all committee members are scoring the same version of the proposal.

Grantees will be announced Friday, May 27, 2021. Sometimes we have to make some changes to the round schedule. If that happens, it will be reflected on the round schedule on the Project Grants start page.

We look forward to engaging with you in this Round!

Aggregated feedback from the committee for Atudu/Wiki Loves Butterfly - Phase V

edit
Scoring rubric Score
(A) Impact potential
  • Does it have the potential to increase gender diversity in Wikimedia projects, either in terms of content, contributors, or both?
  • Does it have the potential for online impact?
  • Can it be sustained, scaled, or adapted elsewhere after the grant ends?
8.0
(B) Community engagement
  • Does it have a specific target community and plan to engage it often?
  • Does it have community support?
8.0
(C) Ability to execute
  • Can the scope be accomplished in the proposed timeframe?
  • Is the budget realistic/efficient ?
  • Do the participants have the necessary skills/experience?
8.6
(D) Measures of success
  • Are there both quantitative and qualitative measures of success?
  • Are they realistic?
  • Can they be measured?
5.8
Additional comments from the Committee:
  • Interesting approach based on topic and format (photo-walks).
  • Butterfly taxonomy is very broad and the coverage of this topic is not enough on Wikimedia projects, particularly on Wikipedia and bridging this sort of knowledge gap does fit with Wikimedia's strategic priorities.
  • There have been many Wiki Loves campaigns, but this campaign takes a unique approach by focusing quality on the images. These high quality, well-categorised images are great contributions to Wikimedia Commons, which have high usage potential. This can be model for other WIki Loves campaigns to take inspiration from.
  • The past WLB were successful and the goals met. About 190 of the photos have also been promoted to "quality images status". The measure of success is clear and measurable as proposed
  • The project already had several iterations in the past, and delivered great results. With this modest budget and the experience of the team, the project has high potential to be successful.
  • Considering that past editions were successful, I have no doubt that the 2021 edition would be successful with this additional funding
  • While the focus is on quality, it would be good if the team developed modules for other communities to replicate this in their geographies. The project has largely been limited to Eastern part of India. The team can think of the lines of a learning pattern, wherein someone who wants to do something similar in other parts of India or the world, should be able to understand the steps involved and execute it. The team can also provide training for people interested and develop to build their projects.
  • There is no community engagement, even though the proposal was announced in multiple venues including community portals.
  • Basically the project is good and has a reasonable relation costs/benefits anyways there is something to check into the budget. It's a photo safari/photo walk but why is there a need to buy a camera and lens? Is this equipment shared among other participants? If not, what kind of equipment will other participants use?
  • It is not clear from the proposal how the equipment that would be bought and managed, and what will happen to them after the project is over, who will be in charge of the equipment. Will the equipment be returned to the WMF? Generally, I'd like to recommend this proposal for funding if these questions are answered.
  • The project will have a positive impact.

This proposal has been recommended for due diligence review.

Response to committee comments

edit
Hi @Mjohnson (WMF): and grants committee members,

Hope you are all doing well. Thank you for your honest review and valuable suggestions, which means a lot for us. I will try to give you the clarification about your questions.

Learning pattern: We will work on the learning pattern and develop a module for other Wikimedians who will be willing to plan similar projects in near future. We will try to capture or document all kinds of issues in the process of planning and execution of this project and the steps to be taken to overcome them to manage the situation. We will publish that at the end of this project.

Equipment: As we have mentioned in the grant proposal that the previous budgets for the previous phases of WLB Project was not sufficient for us to get at least one high-end camera and super macro lens for our team, which could help us to shoot high-resolution photographs of butterflies. The cameras and lenses which currently belong to our team members personally are all entry level cameras and lenses with much limitations and narrower scope of butterfly shooting. Hence, a high end camera and super zoom macro lens shall definitely make our team more enthusiastic for producing more quality images and better results. That's why we wish to pursue this upgrade of our gears.

The equipment which we are planning to purchase through this grant will solely be used by the team members whenever they will be going to the field work. The teams will take the responsibility and will take due care of the equipment. After the fieldwork the gears will be handed over to the next field team.

The equipments will be bought from the market with proper receipt. The receipts will be sent to the foundation when the project finance report is submitted.

Wiki Loves Butterfly is a continuous project and we have entered the fifth phase of the project this year. We have plans to continue this project for coming years too, even after this grant period is over. We will fully utilise these gears during those upcoming phases too. If some time in the future, we plan to discontinue or terminate our project due to whatsoever reason, then we will hand over the set of gears to the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group, our local affiliate, so that members of this group can use the gears in a proper way for suitable projects.Thank you--Atudu (talk) 16:37, 25 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Mjohnson (WMF): and Project Grants committee members, regarding community engagement, I would like to inform that West Bengal Wikimedians User Group, the local affiliate, has been actively supporting this project for last few years in various ways. The affiliate members are fully aware of the progress of this amazing project and all its five grant applications including this one. The user group recognises and appreciates the uniqueness of the project, dedication and hard work of the team members, transparency of handling grant money and strict adherence to reporting on time. Please consider my comment as official endorsement from the entire user group. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 04:46, 30 March 2021 (UTC) (On behalf of West Bengal Wikimedians User Group)Reply
Hello @Mjohnson (WMF):, I am very much interested to intend to work on the learning pattern. As per todays discussion, I added the leaning pattern part to the grant page. Thank you--Atudu (talk) 12:53, 30 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Round 1 2021 decision

edit

Congratulations! Your proposal has been selected for a Project Grant.

The committee has recommended this proposal and WMF has approved funding for the full amount of your request, $17,418

Comments regarding this decision:
The committee is pleased to support this much-loved project to increase the number of free license materials regarding the butterfly taxons available in the eastern and north-eastern parts of India, along with enrichment of related content on different Wikimedia sites. They particularly emphasize the value of the toolkit you will create to share your process with others, and pointed out the potential for replication with respect to multiple species.

NOTE: Funding of any offline activities (e.g. travel and in-person events) is contingent upon compliance with the Wikimedia Foundation's COVID-19 guidelines. We require that you complete the Risk Assessment Tool:

  • 14 days before any travel and/or gathering event
  • 24 hours before any travel and/or gathering event

Offline events may only proceed if the tool results continue to be green or yellow.

Next steps:

  1. You will be contacted to sign a grant agreement and setup a monthly check-in schedule.
  2. Review the information for grantees.
  3. Use the new buttons on your original proposal to create your project pages.
  4. Start work on your project!

Postpone the WLB phase-V Project till June’22

edit

As per discussion with Wiki Loves Butterfly team members and @THasan (WMF):, I think it would be best to postpone the second part of WLB Phase-V project till June 2022. This decision was made due to the following reasons;-

  • I am now a new mother and I am getting very busy with a new schedule in my personal life, for which it would be extremely difficult for me to communicate, direct and motivate my team members properly as the project lead at least until June this year.
  • This winter time in India is not at all productive for butterfly documentation in any part of West Bengal and North-East India because the butterflies enter a dormant period in colder months.

Hence, in detailed internal discussion with my team members, we have concluded that postponing the second part of the WLB Phase-V project until June 2022 will be very favorable for the real growth and prosperity of the documentation project. We wish to continue the second part from June 2022. We request @THasan (WMF): to approve our team's decision to extend our project timeline so that the next installment of grant money can be sent accordingly by WMF. Thank you. –Atudu (talk) 15:02, 28 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Atudu thank you for the mid point report and the request for extension of the timeline. Your midpoint report has been reviewed and accepted. This request has been approved. THasan (WMF) (talk) 10:26, 31 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Noting here that the new final report due date is 30 July December 2022 (within 30 days from the grant new end date, 30 November 2022).
