Grants talk:Project/Rapid/AWM/Symposium 2017
Latest comment: 7 years ago by AWang (WMF)
HI Ursulageorges. Than you for this grant proposal and your efforts in developing the project. There is a lot of good synergy and potential between the Women in Math community and Wikimedia! We see our questions/comments below:
- Beyond publicizing the outcomes of the event, it would be great if you included plans to follow-up with participants. We have found that one-off editathons do not often result in retaining new editors without plans for continued engagement and online mentorship. It would be good to discuss with your co-organizers/facilitators how and in what capacity you can offer support to participants after the editathon.
- Please provide more details on the travel costs. Does AWM also provide sponsorship for participants at the symposium? Have you considered reaching out to any of the experienced Wikimedians in LA to see if they can support with facilitation? Jami is a great Wikimedian but not local, as you know. I can help connect you with local Wikimedians if necessary.
Looking forward to your responses. Best, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 21:10, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, Alex Wang (WMF)!
- We've added some ideas for ongoing engagement (through email and an in-person meeting) and some more detailed thoughts about math + teaching + Wikipedia.
- AWM has some funding for symposium travel, but it is specifically targeted at early-career mathematicians and presenters in certain special sessions (I've added some specifics to the grant request). We hope some of these symposium attendees will participate in the edit-a-thon, but this funding is not available to the facilitators. Jami does have a possible local place to stay, so I've adjusted the grant request accordingly. We would appreciate suggestions for LA-area Wikimedians to contact.
