Rapid Grant

edit

Hi BrillLyle. Thanks for your patience as we reviewed this request. We are happy to support this event and are excited about both the content and partnerships! We have a few follow-up questions upon approval.

  1. Do you have a sense of the number of RSVPs yet? It sounds like the upper limit of the budget is $1,000 but it could be lower depending on the number of participants.
  2. Currently, the NYC chapter is ineligible to serve as a fiscal sponsor because they have an outstanding annual activities report due (not a grant report). This report is needed to comply with their affiliate obligations. Please see the Reports page. If they are able to post or link to it asap, that would be great.
  3. Beyond adding participants to a mailing list after the event, what do you hope will be the longer term impacts of the event in terms of recruiting new editors or developing a partnership with Her Girl Friday and/or Lenny Letter?

Hi @AWang (WMF): Thank you so much for approving this grant!
1. Because these are all news organizations and it's right before the inauguration -- which all of the users are covering intensively -- the publicity push for the event is a bit preliminary. After this weekend, I will circle the wagons and start to make sure that there is a full court press on publicizing this event through all channels. Right now the Facebook RSVP is 51 Interested, 22 Going. Lenny Letter has not yet started publicizing through their somewhat massive social media following. I am meeting with them Tuesday and will ping them on this. They have committed to publicizing this, which is great -- and even a little scary. We are definitely keeping an eye on the RSVPs via Facebook, the Outreach Dashboard, and the event page and can update this grant page as we get a better idea. We have concerns that if the event is widely attended we might run out of food and space, but that is not a terrible problem! :-)
2. I just updated the annual activities report page. Apologies I think we had a bit of miscommunication within the chapter on who was going to follow through on this. We have all of our activities for WM NYC collocated on the on Wiki Meetup namespace Event archive, so this was a purely accidental oversight. I'm sorry about that. Do you have the ability to change the checkmark to a compliance level? Again, sorry about that. It has some part of my person myopia that all of the chapter activities are on Wiki, not on Meta. We don't use this space that much anymore.
3. I think this will be a very interesting thing to evaluate -- the longer term impact for influential, rich content creators like Her Girl Friday and Lenny Letter. Part of what I am already noticing from the feedback of the mini-workshop I held with HGF as well as with Broadly at VICE today is a lot of this is about education and outreach, explaining the 5 Pillars and Conflict of Interest issues. This population is uniquely suited to being Wikipedia editors -- I would posit they are even better fits than librarians -- as what they are doing in the work they are publishing is similar to BLP entries, with many hyperlinked sources within the articles. Almost every Lenny Letter article triggers my itch to either create or add to a Wikipedia entry, so this is a great potential outcome, that would impact highly on #GenderGap issues especially as Lenny Letter specifically is a feminist publication. I guess the big question is how to measure this engagement pre- during- and post-event. I should work on developing something that would help to measure this, possibly?

Hi @BrillLyle:. Thanks for your thorough responses. I've asked our WMF/Affiliates Committee liaison to review the updated report link and change the chapter's eligibility. We'll confirm with you asap. Regarding how to assess the longer term impact, it would be an interesting conversation to have. Maybe we can set up a time to chat in the coming weeks. I'll email you. Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 21:25, 20 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi @AWang (WMF): Thank you so much. Whatever we need to do to fix eligibility.... Would like this fiscal sponsorship to be available to others once this is resolved.
I would be happy to talk when you have time, either before or after the event.
