Comments from WMF
editHi, Jaluj, thank you for submitting this final report and your expense documentation. I have reviewed and accepted the expense documentation. I have also conducted a preliminary review of this grant report and have a few follow-up comments and questions:
Comments and Questions
- Thank you for creating such a detailed report! The enthusiasm for your project in the Dominican Republic is clear by the number of participants, the amount of articles edited, and the creation of the new user group. It's wonderful to see the photos, to see how many people were present and how engaged they were. It's also exciting to learn that there is so much enthusiasm and support from the university. It seems like this is the beginning of a potentially very fruitful contribution to the Wikimedia movement!
- In the Outcome section you indicated that you did not meet your goal of editing articles in Wikiquote, but did not explain why. Please edit the report to include an explanation of why this goal was not met.
- At events, when participants did not wish to create their own user accounts or edit articles, what were they doing while others were editing? Was there a way for them to engage and participate?
- Thank you for breaking the project down by event. Please also edit the report to add the total number of participants and total number of articles created or improved from all the events.
- It's wonderful that you have been able to provide guidance over the internet to the wikimedistas in Dominican Republic since the event. When you think about how the Wikimedia movement will continue to grow and evolve do you see yourself staying involved, including traveling to DR, on an ongoing basis, or is the goal to train local leadership and eventually step away?
Looking forward to your responses!

- Thank you LSmith (WMF).
The number of participants far exceeded our expectations. We didn't have enough biography research sources or material for all those people. I can't say that there were participants who didn't want to create their own user accounts or edit articles, but didn't animate themselves. Wiki language is not very comfortable for everyone. But these participants were not left out because they generated very rich discussions and debates. In my presentations I always show examples of gender bias in Wikipedia articles with specific articles. In this case there was a very rich discussion about what the bias is, if indeed those articles had gender bias or not and how they could be improved. There was a discussion about notability, reliability and some Wikipedia's rules were questioned by the participants. I've learnt a lot. The number of new accounts created was 41, most of them, women we had previously worked with us preparing the research from the sources. That is why we expected 40 persons.
Another important point to highlight is that all the biographies created were about women of color, which made us participate in the campaign of the colors of Whose Knowledge?/VisibleWikiWomen.
Everyday, I am reviewing and correcting articles, working together with the Wikimedistas de Republica Dominicana. It's not the same in person as online but I'm trying to do my best. After I came home, they met more times in order to finish more biographies that are still in the sandbox. They asked me that they want to organize more workshops to help newbies to research and collect information about the life of the women that they want to biography, to teach them how to use computers more comfortably and so they can learn how to handle the wiki more deeply. They realized that the best thing is to do the workshops after 5 p.m. and/or weekends. Wikimedistas de Republica Dominicana definitely want to promote the use of Wikimedia in the country and to lead this process. My goal was to train local leadership and step away but when I told them that they could continue to create articles on their own, they got scared and told me that they want to continue receiving my support. The Executive Director of CIPAF was in a meeting with the Vice-Minister of Education and several general directors talking about the editha-a-thons. She believes that we can do something with them as well. I have several projects and ideas in mind. They are planning to invite the women who were biographed and are still alive to share a little and give publicity to the activity, to keep the interest going. I am sure the movement it's gonna keep growing if we don't leave them alone.--Jalu (talk) 00:58, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
