Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Punjabi Wikimedians/Punjabi Wikisource Plan (November-December 2017)
Hi Stalinjeet. Thank you for this grant proposal and apologies for the delay in review. It's great to hear that you have a group of community members who are enthusiastic about contributing to Wikisource. However, as outlined in the Rapid Grant funding guidelines, we don't typically pay for volunteers to do the actual digitization as this can be construed as paid content creation. We can fund the purchase of a scanner (please link to the scanner you have identified as being best suited to your needs), as well as as the events and fiscal sponsorship of CIS. Please update the proposal and we can move forward. Best, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 02:37, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hi @AWang (WMF):, thanks for you comments. We would like to tell you that the Wikipedia-in-Residence(s) will be responsbile for not just digitizing the books but also to organize events to better integrate the works into Wikisource and subsequently on other Wikimedia projects (such as Wikipedia) as well. Also, this proposal has been proposed with community's support and we have huge number of works to be digitized that will be difficult to do as volunteers. Also, we have done an MoU with a local organization and doing this project in time will help us foster future collaborations with them. Do let me know if there is any way by which we can improve the proposal to better demonstrate the whole plan ? --Stalinjeet Brar (talk) 15:08, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Stalinjeet Brar. Thank you for the additional details. We definitely understand that digitization is a labor-intensive activity, however we are trying to remain fair in how we assess digitization projects around the world and hope to clarify the guidelines in the near future. Can you ask your active Wikisource members what their priorities are in terms of sources and focus on those for the next two months? Do the individuals identified to do the scanning have specific technical skills that make them more qualified to do the digitization? What type of outreach will be done around the digitized works and what are the goals of the planned events? Can you tell us more about the partner organization and MOU? What is included in the project? Thank you, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 23:05, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hi again @AWang (WMF):, Apologies for the late reply. With discussion among the community, we have come to this conclusion that we will consider this period as a pilot and also a phase for the certain community members to gain specific technical skills associated with digitization. As per our focus for the next two months, we will focus on having as much as digitized works as possible because currently not much content is available to be integrated into Punjabi Wikisource. Events will be planned to engage more community members. We will be sending a copy of the MoU via email. I will be changing the proposal to reflect the changes with regard to the remuneration related to digitization. Thanks a lot for your support. --Stalinjeet Brar (talk) 14:44, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Stalinjeet Brar. Thank you for your thoughtful reply. We're happy to discuss the community's needs again after this pilot period. It will be good to better understand how the new scanner is being used, how easy or challenging (time-consuming) it is to use, and what skills are needed to use it. We'll also be interested to understand what the community wants to prioritize in terms of content to be scanned and how they will engage with it. Request for extension
editHi @AWang (WMF): We are sorry but because of certain reasons the grant was delayed and then the company which was supposed to supply scanner didn’t have one in stock so the delivery of the same was delayed. The scanning is going on and we need some time to submit the report. Please give us an extension of 15 days i.e. till 20th September 2018. Thanking you in anticipation.
Regards, -Stalinjeet Brar (talk) 11:10, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
