Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Uniba - Dipartimento LELIA/Translatathon Uniba
Keeping in mind things to translate must be carefully chosen, this may be a good idea. Though you definitely need some experienced Wikipedian, did you have one? Did you try contacting Italian WMF chapter? --Vituzzu (talk) 10:14, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for the comment. I think Nicolabel has partly replied in his endorsement. In any case the pages will be carefully selected both as a representative sample of entries concerning the Sustainable Development Goals and as good transaltion exercise for postgraduate trainee transaltors. Nicolabel is the experienced Wikimedian who is going to assist us in the editathon.I have not tried to contact the Italian WMF, but I will consider doing it. My goal (and the main reason for requesting a grant) is to use the editathon as an opportunity to reflect on the multilingual nature of Wikipedia and share experience and good practice with colleagues from other European universities who have already run similar porjects.— The preceding unsigned comment was added by LM94 BA (talk)
- If there's a Nicolabel around you don't need anything more! --Vituzzu (talk) 19:35, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

Comments from WMF
editHello LM94_BA thank you for putting this proposal together and organizing such a great project.
- Can you give a better breakdown of your budget? i.e. how much are you expecting to spend on travel, how many nights of hotel needed?
- You stated it will be used to bring individual(s) from other European institutions to your launch event. Can you let us know how many people you plan to have at the launch?
- Do you also have a contingency plan if Nicolabel is unable to lead the editathons? Given that your proposal is for an extended period of time.
Please let us know your answers to these questions. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 23:24, 7 March 2018 (UTC)

editHello WJifar (WMF), here below my answers to your questions:
1) Budget break down
Bari is the destination of many low-cost flights from Europe; nonetheless reaching the south of Italy in late spring can be expensive due to tourism flows or in case no low-cost flight are available for a specific route. For one guest from abroad, the budget should include:
- 400 euro (flight)
- 200 euro (two nights in a hotel near the University)
- 100 euro (4 meals)
If we invite two people from abroad, this budget should be doubled, which makes a total of 1400 euro. The remaining 200 euros in the total budget should cover the following:
- 100 euro (travel expenses for 1 representative of Wikimedia Italia joining the launch event)
- 25 euro (1 meal for a representative of Wikimedia Italia joining the launch event)
- 75 euro (coffee break for 25 people during the edithaton)
It goes without saying that the actual cost of travel for speakers from abroad could be much lower than stated in the budget, if we can book in advance and if low cost flights are available.
2) Can you let us know how many people you plan to have at the launch? The original plan was to have two speakers from other European Univeristies and one representative for Wikimedia Italia School and University Projects. Should for any reason be difficult to keep to the original plan, I do believe that the event would be equally successful with only one invited speaker from abroad and one representative from Wikimedia Italia. Any unused budget would be returned.
3) Contingency plan, given that the proposal is for an extended period of time.
It was my mistake to indicate such an extended priod of time for the proposal. In fact, the edithaton is to take place in two distinct days between 1st and 15th May 2018 (e.g.7 and 12 May). The events will be scheduled so as to guarantee the presence of Nicolabel and could beeasily rescheduled should any problem emerge on the way. As stated in the project, the marathon includes offline assignments which do not require the presence of an expert Wikimedian
I have indicated a longer time only because I thought that this would give me the opportunity to use the money later in the year, should the grant arrive too late to use it . Now I realize it was unnecessary to do so.
Thanks! --LM94 BA
Approval
editHello LM94 BA, thank you for responding to my questions here. I am approving your grant request. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 02:46, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
Request: Change to the budget
editHi everybody! Everything’s ready for the translation edithaton to start. The launch event will take place at the University of Bari (Italy) on 14th May 2018 You can read details and follow updates at the dedicated Wikipedia page.
A number of speakers have agreed to be with us for the launch event, to introduce aspects of Wikimedia activities with a special focus on the relevance of Wikipedia’s multilingual nature to translation training, and on the importance of joining forces between WMF and the academia: Nicolabel Maria Calzada Perez Luigi Catalani Ester Pantaleo
In my initial budget I had assumed that transportation costs could be high, especially in the case of flight tickets from abroad bought at the very last minute. For this reason I had not included honoraria for the speakers. However, our speakers were all able to reduce transportation costs to a minimum. Since it is a practice required at my university to offer a small (100-150 euros) honorarium to speakers, I should be very grateful if the community allowed me to use part of the unused budget for transportation to cover the expenses for honoraria to speakers. This would make things much easier for me also because in my university the reimbursement of travel expenses for people using private transportation means (e.g. private car) is a really complicated process.
Thanks! LM94 BA
Approval of budget change
editHello LM94 BA, please accept my apologies for the delayed response on this request. Your email and ping slipped through my inbox. I am approving your honoraria request for unspent funds. Please let me know if you need anything else. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 05:32, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
Problems with my account LM94 BA changed into Gatto Uniba
editHello, after submitting the project as LM94_BA I was invited to rename my user by Nemo (here's the link to the request: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:%22Gatto_Uniba%22) I eventually did so, and my user has apparently been changed (as requested by me) into "Gatto Uniba" (I received a mail form Meta). As a matter of fact I cannot now log in with any of these users... can you help me? It is of crucial imortance for me to solve this problem and keep my account related to this project as it's high time for my report! Thank you all.
Problem solved, it seems. My new user included inverted commas ("Gatto Uniba"): https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utente:LM94_BA
I'll be back here soon with updates. Gatto Uniba
Project date extension request
editHello, here I am with some update on the project and a request for an extended deadline.
The project started very well in the week between 14th and 17th May 2018, and the translation tasks were all carried out. As you can see in particular from the history of the article "Sostenibilità" (https://it.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sostenibilit%C3%A0&action=history), over 80,000 bytes of text have been added after our translatathon in May 2018. More text has been translated for which accurate proofreading is still in progress by the teaching staff involved, by experts in sustainability issues, and - of course - by our expert wikimedian Nicolabel. More info about the initiative can be found at this page https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progetto:Coordinamento/Universit%C3%A0/UNIBA/Translatathon and will be further detailed in English in our final report.
Having completed the first of the two planned translation editathons we are now working on the second one, with repeat participants. We would also like to spend all remaining funds in a follow up event to present the results of this small project discussing the impact of this experience on translator training. We have been doing our best to organize this event so as to meet the deadline of 9th December 2018, but we are not yet sure we will eventually be able to do so. What we need is probably only a one-week extension, as a good date for the second and last editathon could be around 17th December 2018, but at this stage it would be probably safer to extend the deadline up to 9 April 2019. This because if we do not succeed in organizing the translation editathon and closing event before the winter holidays, we could not do anything before 1st March 2019, when the new semester begins.
Therefore I should be very grateful if you could approve a deadline extension up to 9th April 2019 (final report due by 9th May 2019). Many thanks for your kind attention. Gatto Uniba
Extension of project dates approved
editHello Gatto Uniba, thank you for providing the reasoning for the project date extension. I am approving your new date for concluding the project as well as new report due dates. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 05:48, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
Thank you so much to all of you! Gatto Uniba
Project Update
editDear all, dear WJifar (WMF),
here I am with a quick update.
We are ready to organize the second translation editathon, along with a closing event for our project, whose final report is due on 9th May 2019.
We have invited two colleagues from the University of Padua (Italy) who have been running a similar project: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progetto:Coordinamento/Universit%C3%A0/UNIPD/Traduzione_specializzata_Inglese_1
This will give us a great opportunity to share experiences with other people interested in studying the relevance of Wikipedia to transaltion training.
The event is scheduled on 18th March 2019.
We expect to use our funds as follows:
Travel expenses for 2 people from Padua: nearly 300 euros
Accommodation for 2 people from Padua: nearly 200 euros
Meals for 2 people for 2 days (4 meals): nearly 200 euros
Should this budget be confirmed, we would use any remaining funds for a coffee-break/brunch with the 24 students taking part in the translatathon.
Thanks!
