Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Wiki From Above 2016/Report

Thanks for this report, Douglas! Congratulations on the impressive 58% use rate you achieved through this project. The prize-winning photographs and videos certainly are impressive. I particularly enjoy that you had a category for "Best use on Wikipedia". We are sorry to hear that the new aviation rules in South Africa put a damper on your project, and lessened the enthusiasm of some participants. Thanks for sharing your observations about decreasing the prize amounts and amounts spent on advertising. Even if you do not plan to continue running this contest, those may be useful points for others organizing similar work. This report is accepted. Morgan and Janice will be in touch regarding the underspend of R2,582.69 you've reported. All the best, Winifred Olliff (WMF Program Officer) talk 23:11, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Wolliff (WMF), thanks for the positive feedback. We were also impressed with the high level of usability of submitted photographs and I would like to support the use of drone media on Wikipedia by others moving forward in some way. Even if we do discontinue the competition in South Africa I would like to see it carry one is some form elsewhere. I look forward to talking to Janice and Morgan about the under spend. Might be easiest to send it back to the Foundation but I will talk with them about it. We plan to open our new bank account this coming weekend for WMF funds only so we could agree to transfer that amount in there first? --Discott (talk) 09:12, 15 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
