Explain your plan

edit

Tell us about how you contribute currently, and how you would contribute if WMF were to gift a used laptop to you.

Since 2008, as African Hope, I have been editing Wikipedia, in French mainly, as well as its sister projects such as Commons, where my bot gives a helping hand from time to time. Alongside with my volunteering editing, I was deeply involved in the growth of the local User Group, Wikimedia Community User Group of Côte d’Ivoire (WCUG-CI). From its official affiliation in 2014 until today various roles were assigned to me : Wikipedian in Residence, GLAM-WIKI Coordinator, and more recently, Vice-Chair of the WCUG-CI.

But the coordination role isn't the thing I enjoy the most. What really makes me happy is my role as coach. Being in charge of the editorial aspects of our edit-a-thons, my mission implies preparing the topics or articles that will be edited, gathering the sources by sometimes getting in touch with GLAM partners, and providing advice and mentorship to contributors during the edit-a-thon and even after.

With this laptop, I intend to keep working following the roles that I mentioned above: as active editor and devoted coach in my community.

Affected projects

edit

Add the existing Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Commons, etc.) and language versions that you seek to impact with this equipment.

  • Wikipedia (FR/EN)
  • Commons: mainly with my bot
  • Meta
  • Outreach
  • As a 3-month Language Strategy Coordinator (contract) for the Foundation I will work on French versions of all inter-wikis and eventually Breton and Occitane language as well

Work you're proud of

Show us (through links) some of your best Wikimedia work, on or off wiki, to help us get a sense for the kind of work you do. (no more than 3 or 4 links at most, please.)

  10.   Support Even though I do not even remotely belong to the same community as this User, but having gone through the nature of edits this User does, I think he is totally eligible. --Mouryan (talk) 09:00, 19 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You are encouraged to track the impact this equipment has helped you make. This encourages WMF to donate more hardware.

MacBook Pro from the WMF's Hardware Donation Programme

Facilitating strategic discussion and empowering GLAM activities

edit
  • WMF's laptop greatly served the GLAM-Wiki's cause in Côte d'Ivoire and beyond. While I coordinated volunteer activities with GLAM actors, the laptop was used for preparing edit-athons, drafting articles, writing SQL-based queries to track edit-athons stats, writing grant requests and reports, etc.

Graphic design for the WCUG-CI

edit

I used the laptop for designing communication materiels such as flyers for 1Lib1Ref campaign 2018 in Côte d'Ivoire. The Macbook Pro is now being used by User:Ivcom, a volunteer graphic designer in charge of the User Group's visuals.

Applying and joining WMF

edit

Back in May 2018, when I was drafting my application letter and all other related materials for the Trust & Safety position at Wikimedia Foundation, I was still using that laptop donated by WMF. In August 2018, I was hired by the Foundation and joined the awesome Trust & Safety team. Several months later, as I am reflecting upon the tremendous impact of this donated device on my volunteer work and professional life, I can only wish more people embrace this wonderful initiative. Long live the Hardware Donation! -- African Hope (talk) 22:09, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
