IPs hidden – tools to use
Hi everyone,
This is important and is about how the tools to fight vandalism, spam, and harassment in the future will look.
The requirements for privacy online have changed much since 2001, when Wikipedia was started, and continue to change. The Wikimedia Foundation is currently working on a project to be able to hide the IP addresses that today are shown in the history and among the recent changes when someone edits without logging in to an account: m:IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation. Hiding this is something we do because we believe it is necessary for the wiki to be able to live up to those privacy requirements. We know that IP addresses show information which is important in fighting vandalism. We want to ensure that our work does not cause disruption or bring harm to the projects.
There are three ideas about potential tools we are looking into to see if we could develop them to help the anti-vandalism, anti-spam and anti-harassment workflows to make sure the burden of handling this work isn’t heavier than it is today. Please read that page. It is translated into (insert local language if translated; if not, remove this sentence in the translation).
We need your help with these plans. Which costs, benefits and risks do you think we are unaware of? How can we make them better? What sounds like it could help you and what sounds like it couldn’t?

Also, if the location information only was available in English, how much of a problem would that be for your community? Do you use a service that gives translated locations today? Can you link to that?

Are you using IP information in ways we are missing?
editIf you read m:IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation and m:IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation/Improving tools – does your community use IP address information in ways you think we are unaware of? What is that? Do you have other suggestions for tools that could help?
